D. Bing (1 Viewer)

Possible sleeper if he gets the starting nod? Also could hurt M. Huffs value if he gets moved to FS.

Definitely a sleeper. This was a shocker on the first day of camp, came out of nowhere. The logic might be that Huff goes to FS, with Bing at SS, at first glance. I am not sure if I buy that. Bing at SS, and Huff at FS does two things I don't like:

1. Takes Huff away from the action. I think he can make more impact at SS, blitzing, covering the AFC West TE's (which are no joke), and making plays on passes in the short game. He'll just be more involved. A player can still be an impact player at FS, but it's tougher, IMO.

2. Takes away a lot of athleticism. Huff vs. Gonzales, gates, Tomlinson in the passing game? I feel OK. Bing? Not as much. Coverage was a weakness of his coming out of college.

Schweigert is no Pro Bowler, and I've heard some complaints about him from Raider fans. I am not one of them. You don't hear his name much during the games, which is fine by me. Means he's not getting beat for a bomb. He makes a lot of tackles for a FS, and rarely gets caught out of position. That's enough for me.

I am guessing the thinking might be that Bing would have a better shot at his natural position, especially with WLB locked down by Howard. Which is a shame, because he looked real good as a LB last August, before his "injury".

Ryan had used a 4-2-5 out of necessity before, with Gibson as the big nickel, when we had no linebackers. So it is possible they are envisioning a rover position for him, for use on certain downs.

Unclear what the plan is for him, hopefully Kiff will address it during mini-camp.

SS is definitly a more natural position for Bing and the article does talk about Huff moving to FS. However just because Bing is being played at SS does not automaticly mean that he is going to start. In the end the Raiders will use thier best 2 safeties on the field when not in nickle packages. I still think the best 2 are Huff and Shweigert.

Shweigert is a very smart player and I think helps the entire defense with pre-snap reads as well as with his reaction to the flow of plays. Ultimatly I think that is the combination the Raiders will end up with and Bing will be the backup SS to Huff.

There may be some nickle packages where Bing will be used as a in the box SS which is his strength. With Huff and Shweigert playing back more from the LOS in coverage support.

That is my opinion and speculation anyways. I see this article as being more about trying different things out than a definite change in the rotation and alignment of the starters.

Raiders | Bing back at safety

Sat, 5 May 2007 06:38:02 -0700

Jerry McDonald, of ANG Newspapers, reports Oakland Raiders LB Darnell Bing has been moved to safety, the position he played in college. "We just talked as a staff and thought his best shot at making the team was to put him back at safety, where he's more comfortable and played his whole career until last year," head coach Lane Kiffin said.

Darnell Bing's transformation from college strong safety to NFL weak-side linebacker ended when Bing, wearing No 29 instead of No. 59, lined up at strong safety in the minicamp.

Bing played linebacker from the outset last season but was placed on injured reserve at the final cut-down.

In the long run, Bing's move to strong safety could mean Michael Huff, the No. 7 overall pick in 2006, could eventually displace Stuart Schweigert at free safety.

What do you guys think about Bing?

He was so highly regarded coming out of college. What happened???????

Bing spoke about the move. I'll look for a link. The gist: He wasn't able to get above 220 last year, and requested the move back to safety.

Raiders have a lot of DBs, and not a lot of LBs, a UDFA will probably stick at LB for them, so I am a bit disappointed myself. I doubt his roster spot is in jepoardy, but I don't see a starting role on the horizon.

Bing just isn't enough of a player to make a meaningful impact in the NFL...or in your lineup.

Moving around Huff to get Bing some PT is foolish. Oakland should be doing whatever it can to make it work with Huff at SS.

Kyle Shotwell
Yeah, that's my guess. Could be last year's TC darling, Ricky Brown, who was on the PS, and got activated in October, I think. They'll keep Williams, Morrison, Howard, Thomas. Those are really the only locks. Gotta figure at least two more make it, but the Raiders have not carried many LB lately. They prefer DBs. So the guys fighting for two spots are: Isaiah Ekejiuba (ST demon last year), Chris Clemons, Ricky Brown, Charlton keith, Shotwell, and JJ Milan. Reading up on Milan, I have to imagine they are converting him to DE. Can't imagine a guy that size and speed playing OLB.

Shotwell is a favorite of the audible, we had a great time interviewing him
