DAL/IND and DET/CIN games - quick thoughts from whoever saw them? (1 Viewer)

Just wondering. From what I can gather:

- MB3 juked too much and generally looked pretty lame

- Romo looked mostly sharp

- Fasano looked VERY sharp

- Colt starters not in long enough to say much, but Sorgi his usual sucky self - they are so dead if Manning goes down

- Kitna looked pretty sharp

- C Johnson did too, tho only had a couple tosses

- Rudi did his typical great start/late fizzle

Here's my quick assessment of the Lions from last night:

1. Calvin Johnson is as advertised. He's freakin huge and will naturally wall of defenders with his size. He will be able to take over games at times.

2. The starting defense couldn not get to the QB. Granted, two of their D-line did not play in Rogers and White but it looked inept. A weak secondary is going to be exposed quite often if they don't get to the Qb. Upgrade all opposition passing games vs. Detown.

3. Rookies DE Alama-Francis and MLB Johnny Baldwin showed some good wheels getting to the QB and were all over the field. They were playing against backups, but they are rookies so it's something to hang your hat on.

4. Lions have a pretty good stable of QBs. O'Sullivan looks like he has good pocket presence and a pretty good arm.

5. Tatum Bell was Tatum Bell. Yo yo type of carries. 1 carry 11 yards, 1 carry zero yards but the bottom line is that he'll put up some #s fantasy wise but he may not be a long term answer at RB IMO.

6. Huge game for WR Shaun McDonald. He is going to make a significant difference. He's quick and gets open often. A third down specialist.

I only saw smidge of the DAL/IND game but MB3 would pretty much run straight into his blockers and fall down. I am avoiding this RB group like the plague this year.

:goodposting: He had 5 carries and his last one was for 5 yards.
Just mean first carry 20 yds, remaining carries not much. Granted it was a real small "sample size" - and was partly just a jab from someone who owned him last year and time after time saw him w/like 50 yds in 1Q, then 70 for the whole game. :lmao:

No question adding McDonald to the top 3 WRs will make it VERY difficult for defenses to play against the 4 WR sets. Calvin already commanded the attention of the defense on McDonalds 83 yard TD reception. The deep safety went to Calvins side of the field and left McDonald open by 20 yards.

Saw the replay of that. Looks like he's going to give a lot of defensive coordinators headaches from Day One.

Had O'Sullivan nailed McDonald in stride, it would have been closer to 25-30 yards. It looked like a fair catch! That was Calvin's first contribution to the team by stealing that safety away. He will install fear, that's fo shizzle.

Romo looked sharp to me. The Dallas O'line still worries me. Romo was able to get rid of the ball quickly, but some of those obvious blitz packages Indy threw at them looked like absolute jailbreaks.

Didn't see a lot of the negativity some people are saying about Barber. He looked about the same to me.

Brad Johnson has nothing left, Romo gets injured and the Dallas offense will go down the tubes. But I guess you could say that about most offenses if their starting QB went down.

-Indy's offense will look pretty much the same as last year. They'll be hard to stop consistently. I didn't realize until I saw the graphic that the Colts set an NFL record last season by converting 56% of their 3rd downs.

-I was impressed with Gonzalez. He looks like a natural in the slot.

-Roy Hall's size and speed intrigue me, but he is raw. I don't see him doing much this season, but stash him on dynasty rosters if you have room.

-The Colt's defense will be even worse than last season against the run. The new CBs and Bethea made a few nice open field tackles, but if they're making lots of tackles that means that the DL and LBs aren't doing their jobs.

-Keiaho looks like he'll be an adequate replacement for Cato June.

From a fantasy perspective, I was surprised at how often Dallas went to the TE. The TEs had over 100 yards receiving. Now some of this could be because the Cover-2 is vulnerable to good TE play. But it bears watching to see how much the TE will be featured in Dallas' offense.

If you're wondering about Dallas' O-line, they had both starting tackles sit out last night. I doubt many teams would do great with both OTs out of the lineup.

From what little that I did watch of the CIN vs DET game, both O lines looked horrible.

It's still just the 1st preseason game but, imo, neither team will be a playoff contender if thats the best they can do.

The Bengals had neither Willie Anderson nor Levi Jones in uniform. Bobbie Williams looked better than he has in a year and a half. And I thought Eric Ghiaciuc played well against a pretty good set of defensive tackles. I'll leave the Lions to the Detroit homers.

Dallas was without their 2 starting tackles (Flozell Adams and Marc Colombo) and had a rookie (Doug Free) and second year player replace them (Pat McQuistan). I dont agree with your assessment. I thought the Dallas offensive looked alot better then last year and did a relatively good job of picking up the blitz. The offensive line didnt seem to bother Romo as he went 10/11 for over 100 yards.

Watched Det/Cin game:

Det defense needs improvement

I think R. Williams has a big year, but C. Johnson will have to split catches with Furrey and McDonald, who both looked very good. I would move Johnson down a little in re-drafts, because of these two WR's.

T. Bell looked ok, but with the D you got to wonder if the Lions with air it out alot this year.

Rudi, well looked like Rudi, what you see is what you get, good RB.

Palmer looked sharp.

Henry could be a force when he comes back from being suspended, if and when he does, but he is a real talent.

That is pretty telling that the Bengals had both starting tackles out and the Lions still did not get any pass rush at all. I thought the Bengals line was solid. The Lions line was poor in run blocking, and Mulitalo looked like a turnstile inside when Justin Smith blew by him. Other than that play, they seemed average at best in pass protection in the game.
