Dan Coats (1 Viewer)

Here's a rookie who looks like he will get his chance this week, and possibly more.

Dan Coats, from BYU was undrafted but stuck on the Bengals from preseason. He's the #2 TE behind Reg Kelly, who's out with an injury this week for the Baltimore game.

He's not stellar and won't blow your doors off, but now he has an opportunity to show what he can do. If your league favors TEs and/or you are desperate for a deep TE on your squad, here's a possibility.

It should be noted that Nate Lawrie was also signed but he may not be ready to play much yet - he was working with the Bengals before, though.

I'll get on board with this.Mostly a desperation play, but the Bengals will use a lot of play action to the FB and TE around the goal line. Coats has had issues with holding onto catchable balls and he won't get a lot of routes on base downs as the Bengals use the TE primarily as a run blocker, but he might squeeze out a red zone target or seam pass for you this week for sure.

Lawrie has a shot to be activated, if only because the Bengals have nobody left around to use on special teams in Coats has to play a major role on offense.

His negatives:

Offers minimal speed and is not a downfield receiving threat. Does not play with great balance.

outweigh his positives:

Good-sized tight end who stands out as a blocker. Strong, gets leverage on opponents and seals defenders from the action. Displays good awareness, works well with teammates and always looks for someone to hit. Finds the soft spots in the defense as a receiver, works routes and possesses reliable hands.

The two negatives are the most important thing about a TE we are looking for. The fact that he works well with teammates and looks for someone to hit means nothing in the fantasy world.

Good luck!
