the Redskins haven't been the same without him.
Darrell Green to Chris Johnson: "Chris, you wanna race? I'll spot you 25 years to make it fair..."Darrell Green in his prime would've smoked Chris Johnson. Shoot, Darrell Green at 40 would've smoked Chris Johnson.
Not to take anything away from DGreen, but you musta not had a chance to see Bob Hayes explode away from a bunch of 1960s DBs?D said:Fastest guy I've ever seen play the game.
Actually, IMO, this is the only player currently playing that could possibly attain D Green status as far as speed longevity goes. It's just natural to him, just like Green.Matt Waldman said:Darrell Green to Chris Johnson: "Chris, you wanna race? I probably agree as to speed, but CJ's playing the wrong position for longevity. Still, the thing that always amazed me about Green was that he played 20 years at a position at which, at 5'8", he tended to give up at least 3-4" and 20-30 lbs., and often more, to opposing WR's against whom he was often in press-man coverage all alone on one side of the field up until the last year or two of his career. That leaves zero room for error.Actually, IMO, this is the only player currently playing that could possibly attain D Green status as far as speed longevity goes. I still remember one game against Dallas Tony Dorsett had a breakaway run that looked like a sure touchdown, and Green ran the length of the field and caught him from behind. Dorsett got up, completely shocked that anyone could catch him. To this day, this is one of my favorite football plays ever. I think it was on Monday night...anyone else remember this play? The other thing about Darrell Green is he is a really, really classy guy who always was a good citizen and always did a lot for the community. Don't discount "clean living" as part of the key to his longevity...D said:Fastest guy I've ever seen play the game.
That was his first NFL game. I remember when RFK was closing, Darrell told the story of him in the tunnel about to play that first game. Some major paraphrasing here...Richie Pettibon asked him, ''Are you ready?" Darrel said he was. Pettibon said, "No, are you ready? This is Monday night. This is the Dallas Cowboys. This is RFK." The Redskins lost, but it was the start of a HOF career.I still remember one game against Dallas Tony Dorsett had a breakaway run that looked like a sure touchdown, and Green ran the length of the field and caught him from behind. On the Dickerson tackle, look at Dickerson on the ground looking back at who tackled him. He had no idea he could be caught. Dorsett was at least looking back and saw DG coming and tried to stiff arm him.I still remember one game against Dallas Tony Dorsett had a breakaway run that looked like a sure touchdown, and Green ran the length of the field and caught him from behind. Well how fast is 22 mph? I heard a rumor growing up that he chose that number because that's how fast he could run. I don't know if that's true or even if 22 mph is fast for a world class athlete.Green was faster... As much as I liked Green, I'm not sure he coulda beat Hayes.Hayes was also the first person to break six seconds in the 60 yard dash with his indoor world record of 5.9 seconds. While a student at Florida A&M in 1962, Hayes ran a new world record for the 100 yard dash with a time of 9.2 seconds. The next year he broke his own record with a time of 9.1, a record that would not be broken for eleven years (until Ivory Crockett ran a 9.0 in 1974). That same year, Hayes set the world best for 200 meters (20.5 seconds, although the time was never ratified) and tied the world record for the 220 yard dash with a time of 20.6 seconds (while running into an eight mph wind).
He was the AAU 100 yard dash champion three years running, from 1962–1964, and in 1964 was the NCAA champion in the 200 meter dash. He would miss part of his senior year in college because of his 1964 Olympic bid for U.S. Gold.
[edit] Olympics
At the 1964 Summer Olympics, in Tokyo, Hayes had his finest hour as a sprinter. First, he won the 100m and broke the current World Record in the 100 m with a time of 10.06 seconds, even though he was running in lane 1 which had, the day before, been used for the 10 km racewalk and this badly chewed up the cinder track. He also was running in borrowed spikes because one of his shoes had been kicked under the bed when he was playing with some friends and he didn't realize until he got there.[citation needed] This was followed by a second gold medal in the 4 x 100 meter relay, which also produced a new World Record (39.06 seconds).
According to wikipedia, Green ran the 100 in 10.08 seconds and Hayes in 10.06 seconds. They both ran the 200 in 20.5.As much as I liked Green, I'm not sure he coulda beat Hayes.
