Data on MLB tackles vs. the run (1 Viewer)

Very interesting and an impressive amount of work went into that research. As was mentioned a few times in that thread, however, while the numbers are nice, there still remains a lot of subjectivity in any analysis.

I think the tackle for loss percentages are very interesting, though, and may give more insight into which schemes (and players) are more aggressive than others. Loving that folks like these guys and Joyner and Football Outsiders are making the attempt to put the numbers out there for consideration.

Thanks for posting this.

I looked at this data some last nite; I’m not sure what it really tells us. As the author stated, many variables are not taken into consideration. You have players like DeMeco Ryans and Patrick Willis who make plays downfield the average LB doesn’t because of their instincts, motor and range. They may get blocked, taken out of the play, but recover to make a great play downfield. We’ve all seen plays on the outside where the OLB or DB should have made the tackle, and here comes the ‘Mike” outta nowhere and makes a play 7-8-9 yards down field, or even a OLB who comes all the way across the field to make a stop. Those type of plays ding ya under this system. As the talent around you improves, I would expect, not only the average yard per tackle to decrease, tackle totals as well. I think Tatupu may be a good example of this.

Whoever did this put in a lot of time and hard work, no doubt… real troopers. :lmao:

I’ve done some stuff like this in the past, (not nearly to this extent) and in the end, the data has relatively little use, or it’s over my head, in terms of having the ability to analyze it, which is most likely the case here. Like the author said, it’s not likely to tells us who the better run defenders are, but someone who knows how to analize it will probably find something.

One thing that confuses me … This was mainly from Patrick Willis getting an incredible amount of hype for his tackle numbers and I wanted to see where he was making his tackles.

But where’s Willis?

Thanks for sharing!
