Daunte Culpepper rejects Chiefs offer (1 Viewer)

Any guesses who the "other team" is?

Fox Sports' Jay Glazer reports that Daunte Culpepper has told the Chiefs he will not meet with the organization because of a "better opportunity with another team".No word on the mystery team. While several teams are using suspect signal callers, hard to imagine any of them willing to meet Culpepper's reported contract demands, including a $10 million plus contract for 2009. The Chiefs are likely not upset following a strong Week 8 outing by rookie QB Tyler Thigpen.

Are you kidding me? After all the whinning he did he's gonna get picky? I hope noone will sign him now. He deserves to be jobless after this.

Better than being handed a starting gig with Bowe, Gonzo, LJ ?

Hmmmm

I'm seeing it one of 2 ways

1) He'd rather be a backup for a contender and hope to win one that way? Dallas or Denver?

2) He can start for a contender? New England with Randy?

I'm ruling out Detroit, SF, Cincy, Seattle

My guess would be the Denver Broncos.
Broncos Will Pass on Culpepper
On Thursday, Ciskie pointed out that Daunte Culpepper had decided to pull a "Favre" and unretire. Perhaps the former Vikings first-round pick drew inspiration for his decision based on the gallingly abysmal performances of Cincy's Ryan Fitzpatrick and Kansas City's Tyler Thigpen, as well as the news that Denver had placed Jay Cutler's backup, Patrick Ramsey, on injured reserve.

I think most rational people can agree that Culpepper -- even the one who limped around Miami and Oakland in recent seasons -- would be an upgrade over Fitzpatrick, Thigpen and Ramsey, but there is the whole issue of learning an entirely new offense midway through the season, not to mention any lingering concerns about Culpepper's health.

Which might explain why Denver has decided to take a pass:

The Broncos have told agents they will not sign a backup quarterback with NFL experience and will instead formally promote Darrell Hackney from the practice squad to their 53-man roster Monday.

If the Broncos eventually need an experienced backup, they are more apt to consider Bruce Gradkowski or Craig Nall, who are well-traveled on the NFL tryout circuit, including a stop in Denver, than Daunte Culpepper, who just announced he is unretiring.
I can't argue with that logic, particularly since it really doesn't matter who's under center when the Broncos defense physically can't make tackles. And I'm not talking about struggling to bring down Brandon Jacobs, I mean letting BenJarvus Green-Ellis run up and down the field on you. Anybody ask Culpepper if he'd be willing to play linebacker?

Cpep going to SF to learn Martz's huge playbook is a no-go . . .

remember Cpep is one of those entitled guys that wants to be handed the starting gig - you actually think that he's going to want to learn Martz's complicated system to get it??

Also could be saving face when he realized that the Chiefs were thinking about canceling the visit themselves.

3) The Chiefs were never seriously interested, and neither is any other team.

it's nobody.

kc was getting cold feet, so he wanted to be the one to break up with THEM.

he'll say the deal didn't work out w/his mystery team and slink back into 'retirement'.

FYI - Rotoworld is now speculating it could be the Niners or Vikings - but its purely speculation at this point.
they must have forgot how him and childress ended. I agree with others who said its no one, this guy really needs an agent if he wants to seriously play again.

Shaun Hill can't throw the ball downfield, which Martz does not like. I don't see Niners giving JTO another chance, so it might be them, but I don't know if thats a "better opportunity." Maybe he thinks the NFC west will be easier to win.

$10 million plus contract for 2009

AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH! AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAH! AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH!

sign him to minimum for 08, a zillion dollar deal salary 09, cut him in February before he gets it or it hits the cap. Boy does this guy need an agent

I was thinking Vikings although that's so....ummm...2005...like I need to go get a Rubick's cube or setup my first Internet Email account. The other thought is the Cowboys...not that I think it's a good idea. SEA is sunk...so why not there? I still think DET can work on their young guys.

He wouldn't last with Singletary as coach. So you can rule out SF

I'm going with Detroit, wildcarding it and throwing out Bucs also taking that deal he rejected in the off-season and backing up aaron rodgers with that sore shoulder.

Why are people saying Detroit?

Really I mean think about it for a second.

Probably the worst possible answer you could give in this thread

Why is it so terrible. Kitna is probably on his way out, orvlosky is terrible and drew stanton hasn't found the field. This is a chance for him to run with a starting job. He has some weapons, better the any QB currently on the roster right now aside from the IRed Kitna and also like i said if he succeeds has the chance to get signed and start again in 09

Cassel turned the corner in the St. Louis game. Not happening.

10 million contract?

There is not a team in the NFL that would give Peppy that kind of money with the way he has played the last few years.

I was thinking the vet minumum plus incentives.

Which his agent will turn down. Reminds me of the old lawyer adage: Any lawyer who represents himself has a fool for a client.

Im going with Dallas
Not going to happen...imo.Garrett got a good look at him while with the Dolphins. I believe he is on record as saying it won't happen.
 If Dallas was going to make a move like this, it would have happened by now. Romo's not far from returning to the lineup at this point.

CPep is an idiot. It's very tough for him to find a team willing to ignore that he's coming in cold, missing training camp with an entire playbook to learn, and actually play him. You saw how important those considerations were with the Patriots when they lost Brady the first week of the season and still didn't sign another QB, instead going with Matt Cassel purely on the basis of his knowledge of the playbook even though he hasn't started since high school.

CPep found, despite all the odds, a team likely willing to give him some starts in KC - they're down to their third or 4th string QB at this point, with nothing to play for - and in his genius he decides to try to insist upon more money. That's the sort of team that would have been willing to give him a few starts down the stretch to see whether he's worth keeping (and KC has a history of signing and starting veteran QB's), and with Bowe and Gonzalez to throw to what more could CPep have asked for?

Classic case of penny wise and pound foolish.

Ill pay him a few hundred bucks to sit in my living room on sundays so i can whip rotten tomatoes off his head everytime one of my players scores a TD.

edit: The Lions are having him in for a workout today.

 What week are we at in the NFL schedule? Where does he think he's going for the kind of :X he wants? Lay off the pipe dude.

Hello Tuesday...The Lions work out "short list" FAs every Tuesday (as do many NFL franchises). Last week it was Tim Rattay. Earlier this year it was Shaun Alexander and Cedrick Benson.Don't mean a thang...routine contingency legwork just in case.
