Davenport-How good of a handcuff for (Fast) Willie Parker? (1 Viewer)

I have FWP as my RB#2 in a start two redraft with td heavy scoring.

I am wondering if trading depth at RB (Gore) to get help at other positions might be the right move.

In order to do this I would need to have a solid handcuff for FWP and up until now I have not been confident that Davenport is that good.

I am starting to wonder though. The offense is moving the ball and they have been in high scoring games. Davenport seems to have run well (I watch all the Steelers games). Veron Haynes is gone and I doubt Duce Staley would be able to do much. I think Davenport has been has been injured alot in the past and he has been a bit of a tease when he has had a chance. (Of course he is notorious for past issues but there are plenty of productive headcases in the NFL-so lets skip the poop jokes)

So what do you think about the Steelers back up running situation? Do you think Davenport would put up good numbers if FWP went down?

Cowher went out of his way to sing high praises for Davenport in today's news conference. There is no doubt in my mind that if FWP goes down, Davenport would be the main benificiary and that he would do well. The only question would be how long he can stay healthy.

Watching him when he played with the Packers, I noticed that he is better if he shares time than a full-time starter. In 2003 & part of 2004, he split time with Green and averaged over 5 yds per carry (NFL.com). However, Davenport has a north-south running style that tends to get him dinged up if he is the feature back.

Completely agree.

I agree with GB as well. Davenport would be given the shot. Only problem is every time he has been given the shot, he got hurt(and he gets hurt sometimes even when not given the shot). I guess what I am saying is, I wouldn't move Gore to get a handcuff who has proven to be fragile unless you are getting some great value in return.

I owned Ahman Green in a keeper league during his stud years, and always drafted Davenpoop late as a handcuff. He started 1 game for Green due to injury in 2004, and always performed pretty close to what Green would do. I felt OK with plugging him in. He went 19 for 178 & a TD.

As a Parker owner now, I'd feel the same way if FWP was out. Davenpoop would get all of FWP's carries & Pittsburgh would still run the ball 60% of the time. He is not as explosive as Willie, but he would be a good RB2 as the starter in Pitt. I recently traded away some RB depth, having Davenport as a cuff.

He may not be the most durable, but the season is more than half over now. How durable does he need to be as a guy you hope you never have to start anyway?

He hasnt looked particularly good when he does get in this season. I vividly remember the pass he caught this week because he got caught from behind on what should have been a huge screen pass. Parker would probably have scored.

This Steeler rushing game is definately not the big bruising Bettis-ready attack of years past. I think without the speed this rushing attack isnt going to succeed, and Davenport just looks slow out there to me.

Davenpoop?I thought he was brought in to replace The Bus.

I thought they called him the Dump Truck.

Davenports injury last year was the only one he had that you could say wasnt 'ticky-tacky'. You cant help when someone falls on your ankle in a prone position, which broke his last year. However, he's ALWAYS got something wrong. Hip, hammy, knee, back. He's missed sooo many games in his career with the Packers, always with injuries you dont see happen on the field. Given the chance, yeah he can be a really good back. I'm not surprised at all he's looked good for the Steelers. Once you depend on him though, your in trouble.

I don't think Davenport would be a "feature" back at all. Steelers would go to some form of RBBC with Staley & local favorite John Kuhn in the mix.GB, what's your crystal ball say about Kuhn in the long term? I just heard some good things on a local radio sports cast.

Kuhn is listed as the backup FB and maybe someday he'll replace Kreider. He looked pretty good running and catching the ball in preseason but he has been cut twice. He is on the active roster because he plays special teams more than as an offensive player. I am sure he would get some carries if FWP or Davenport got dinged during a game but I think if either one were hurt long term you would see Staley activated and get more snaps than Kuhn. That is just a guess though. Duce looked pretty bad in preseason so I assume he wouldn't set the world on fire if he were activated -- it probably wouldn't take much for them to pull Duce for Kuhn...

Davenport has played decent, but he seems to go down too easily for a back of his size.

As far as the main question in the thread; I always tend to give up depth later in the season in order to get a better starting lineup heading into the playoffs. So if you can get something decent for Gore I'd do it.
