David Garrard waived by Jaguars, McCown to start Week One (1 Viewer)

They did this to Leftwich in similar fashion. WOW... Jeff Ireland please pick up the white courtesy phone. Garrard is not great but he's better than Henne IMO. Miami has much better WRs than JAX IMHO, this would be a nice upgrade for the Phins.

Is this really true?

Glazer is pretty on point with this stuff. Would this bump up MJD and downgrade Mike Thomas and Mercedes Lewis?

Wow, you can flush MJD and M Thomas' value down the drain.

For Marcedes Lewis, he might still have some value, but he takes a hit as well. Garrard loved throwing to him.

Luckily Dodds didn't recommend him this year, like he has in almost every Perfect Draft article.

Garrard may be better than Henne but it's highly unlikely that he could learn enough of Miami's playbook to be more productive.

I would think it bumps all of them down. MJD already faced some tough up front presence but it will be even worse with no real threat to stretch the field..It's not like MJD can carry the ball a ton more than he already does - they were already a run first team. IMO MJD enjoyed a pretty good situation for a top fantasy RB - a serviceable QB who could make plays at times and at least keep the defense honest. Now he will have defenses solely stopping him until their QBs prove they can hurt them if this news is really true.I guess he may get a lot more check downs now..

caplannfl Adam Caplan Garrard was set to make $8.075 million in base salary. Non-guaranteed. Would have been if he was on the roster on Saturday.

They may resign him?
That might be what is happening but i'd be scared if someone came in a swooped up on a better offer. Garrard isn't elite but he's not a bad QB by any means. SF should be on the phone for sure.

OK, how about an upgrade over Matt Moore at QB2 for a month while he learns the playbook. Miami needs someone to actually push Henne.

Jay_Glazer Jay Glazer I'm reporting the Jaguars today have informed starting QB David Garrard they are releasing him! Luke McKown will start opener! Shocker!!!
Seriously? What is it with Del Rio? He did this with Leftwich a couple of years ago, but this is even closer to the first game. So weak.
Yeah, hard to think of another surprise QB cut so close to game 1. Any others in recent memory?

If it's gonna be Gabbert real soon I would think MJD could catch a lot of short passes. How can the front office do this so close to the season? Maybe he will resign for less money but a team like Seattle is gonna scoop him up and see what they can get out of him in a month after he learns the playbook. That team has skill position guys on par or better than Jax. I never liked Mike Thomas and Lewis would be valuable in the short game I suppose. Rookie QB sooner or later, not good. I guess teams want to find out fast what they have.

Umm.. lol. He's my starting QB in a 20-team league.

Guess I have to go with Kerry Collins.. my only option. This sucks.

MJD could still run for a 100 and score a TD with 11 in the box

I doubt Seattle or San Francisco would put in a claim. $8m is a lot of money for a mediocre QB and they would be on the hook for all of it. I think what will probably happen is he'll resign with Jax on Sat. for a lot less money.

what a cheap move by Jax. If I was a fan I would be really pissed. So, the consensus is downgrade all players from Jax? I am suddenly not feeling good about my MJD selection :X

Won't lose as many goalline touches that Garrard vultures with a rushing TD (5 last year)Though, they have to get near the goalline first.

Surprised they did not try to deal him early on in camp. At the very least Garrard is a very servicable backup.

What a terrible way to treat an employee. Make sure it's too close to the season for him to be meaningfully picked up for quite some time. Terrible.

Has to be more to the story.

Down here in Miami we are aiming for about 40,000 season ticket holders this year, and Jax might be worse. Gonna be a lot of empty seats in the stadium.

If they don't plan on re-signing him, what an effed up thing to do.

I know it's business, not family, but at some point, treating players this way can only hurt the franchise.

Leftwich and Garrard were both solid QBs for a number of years for the Jags. Cutting them just before the season greatly reduces their chances of having a productive year with another team.

They know what kind of player Garrard is and they knew about the 2011 base salary. They clearly could've done this at the beginning of the pre-season. At least with Leftwich, there was a QB competition before he was unceremoniously cut.

I hope they are planning on re-signing him.

A lot of the fans were clamoring for change. Be careful what you wish for.

What a weird move. I get that they think it is time to part ways, but why wait for 2 days prior to the first NFL game to do so. Seems a bit harsh to treat Garrard in this way.

Oh boy. Now, THAT is a salary dump.

If they don't sign him, that locker room is going to be conpletely lost.

I though veterans were free agents when released.
