Does he get yanked for Lefty after his first bad game, or has he been handed the reins?

They are winning with him and looking multi dimentional doing it, so I think it is his job until they 1) Lose and 2) he looks bad in the loss.

the coach has said that leftwich wont start till hes 100 percent....

the coach has said leftwich will not be 100 percent this year......

a qb change HAS been made....not a temporary change....

having said that im betting if things turn sour lefwich will sudenly get really healthy really quick :D

Anyone think it would be safe to drop Leftwich?
I'm struggling with this. We start 2 QBs and can only carry 3 (not including IR). Right now Lefty is still officially listed as questionable so he's still in an IR slot, but I have to decide between dropping him or Pennington probably by next week.

This whole starting QB saga is difficult to get a handle on.

David Garrard is the starter for what looks like the rest of the season. Del Rio stating that Leftwich won't play until 100% healthy + stating that he won't be healthy for the remainder of the season = Garrard for the rest of the year. I don't know what happens if Garrard has a bad outing though.

I think that regardless of what Leftwich's injury status is, the Jaguars are giving Garrard every opportunity to hold on to the starting job from here on out. I also think they they are stuck in the middle as to what direction that they want to go.

Below is a recent editorial from Jaguars.com. Del Rio is pretty comfortable with Garrard (as some of the bolded comments show).

Path clear for Garrard

By Vic Ketchman, jaguars.com senior editor

David Garrard is likely to be the Jaguars' starting quarterback on Sunday against the Houston Texans. Coach Jack Del Rio acknowledged that likelihood at his Monday press conference.

“Byron (Leftwich) is about 85-90 percent and is probably not going to get better than that until he has a long time off. In my opinion, he's about as good as he's going to get,” said Del Rio, who talked about the probable need for offseason clean-up surgery on Leftwich's left ankle.

“David is in a rhythm,” Del Rio added. “I think he's an improving player right now. I'm more comfortable with his decision-making right now and that makes me more comfortable to stick with it.”

Garrard has been the Jaguars' starting quarterback in the last two games, each of them having resulted in victory. He led a 37-7 dismantling of the Tennessee Titans on Sunday, as Garrard threw for three touchdowns and a 120.6 passer rating.

He's proven to his teammates and coaching staff he can move the football team and lead the football team,” Del Rio added of Garrard.

Leftwich sustained an ankle injury the week of a 27-7 loss in Houston on Oct. 22. Leftwich played the whole game but suffered through his worst performance of the season. Del Rio has maintained that Leftwich is the team's number one quarterback and would return to the lineup when he is fully recovered, but Monday's news would suggest Leftwich won't make a full recovery until the season is over.

Del Rio praised several players for their performances in Sunday's win. Garrard got the team's game ball for offense.

I think they are bound to lose at least one game on their remaining schedule,GiantsBuffaloMiamiColtsTNPatriotsKansas Citybut if he does well even in a loss or losses, I wouldn't be surprised if he finishes the season as their starter.

Have to see what Del Rio says this week and who he blames. 3 of the INT's were tipped balls, 2 directly Matt Jones fault. Lots of drops. The whole JAX offense looked bad today.

Did the clock turn to midnight and he turned back into a pumpkin? Didn't Garrard have a hot streak when he came in last year...and then just fizzle out? Please let it be so, I need Leftwich back as a backup.

That is correct. Two of the INT's were slants to Matt Jones that were in his hands and then out. It seems as if he's looking at the defender instead of tucking the ball away prior to the hit. He needs to sack up.Another INT was when Garrard's arm was hit while throwing. The last INT was a bad throw in the endzone. The Jags could have used at least a field goal there.Garrard was definitely off today. I don't know what's going to happen with the QB position, but I do know this though: If that was Leftwich throwing 4 picks, he would be getting grilled by the sorry-### Jaguar fan base right now.

Matt Jones blew the game.Garrard should have had one INT.
And I shoulda been a supermodel playboy millionaire, all QBs deal with bad INTs. But even if David had zero INTs he still played a poor game. I'm not saying the loss is his fault, but he did not play well.

Instead of a complete pass and first down the ball went the other way twice. What can you do?

You didn't see the game so stop.

AP reports Jacksonville Jaguars QB David Garrard, making his third consecutive start in place of QB Byron Leftwich, threw four interceptions today in a stunning loss to the Houston Texans. Two came after WR Matt Jones bobbled perfect passes. WR Ernest Wilford also dropped two balls, including a deep one that could have been a touchdown. Jacksonville's frustration boiled over in the closing minutes, when Wilford and WR Reggie Williams got into a shoving match on the sideline. Garrard completed a 38-yard pass to WR Cortez Hankton with about two minutes remaining, but the play was nullified by Williams' offensive pass interference penalty that forced a punt. Williams walked to the bench, then got into a shouting match with some fans. Wilford tried to calm him down, but ended up getting him more fired up. The two had to be separated. "I was just trying to calm him down and get his head back in the game," Wilford said. "He wasn't ready to be calmed down." Williams also was flagged for holding with about seven minutes to play, nullifying a 10-yard gain that set up first-and-goal at the 3. Garrard threw his fourth interception on the next play.

As a Jags fan, I was much more disappointed in the WRs than Garrard. It is tough to say what Del Rio would do because Garrard really did give them a shot at winning despite throwing 4 INTs. I think the main problem with this game is only 13 runs for Fred and 3 for MJD against a weak run defense. Fred was having a great game and they should have relied more heavily on the run to put it away. Oh well. Not to explain away all the mistakes, but there was a crazy glare across the field that Garrard threw the last, pretty much game ending, pick. It seemed to bother the other players at times as well.Very disappointing!

Uh-oh. Not looking good. :penalty:

I agree.watching the game highlights on the NFL Network Matt Jones and Reggie Williams did not have good games at all. Garrard did not look that good either but did not get any help from Jones. Jones is still a raw WR.

Yeah, Jones just looks so tenative right now. He was starting to catch again the last couple of weeks, but I don't know how much his number is going to get called if he is going to be so weak in securing the ball and ignoring the hit. As to Garrard, he may keep starting because Leftwich may be more injured than he is letting on. It was simply my observation, but twice when the camera panned to him on the sideline Lefty seemed to be limping a bit as he was walking around. Maybe he has a funny gait, but it looked more like he was favoring that ankle. He was downgraded to questionable late in the week after a practice, maybe that ankle won't heal other than surgery and Del Rio isn't simply using it as an excuse. This weeks practices should tell on that score. The sooner they are running 30+ times a game consistantly, the sooner they get back on track this season. With the YPC they were having, letting Garrard throw 34 times is a borderline travesty.

Bump for any info on a QB change
Leftwich is in Alabama having the ever so famous Dr Andrews take a look at his ankle. I would not expect a change at QB even if Andrews clears Leftwich to play. For now, Garrard has the job and it's his to keep if he plays well. [sTART RUMOR SECTION]There sure seems to be a LOT going on in Jax behinds the scenes. Rumors persist of a serious fued going on between Byron and Del Rio. Byron thinks Jack sold him out and Jack thinks Byron lied to him about the seriousness of his injury. There's a good deal of talk that Byron might just go ahead and have whatever surgery he needs(if any) and ask for a trade in the off season, in spite of being well enough to play. There's also talk that the Postons(Byron's agents) want Byron out of Jacksonville as it is one of the worst markets in the NFL(if not the worst) and Del Rio's ultra-conservative offensive style is in stark contrast to Leftwich's strengths as a QB. The Postons feel the Byron will never get his big payday while saddled with Del Rio's run, run, dink pass offensive philosophy. A move to a team that's more willing to throw it deep often would allow Byron to put up the big numbers and get that big payday. [/END RUMOR SECTION]All signs point to Garrard being the QB for a while unless he totally stinks it up. And even then Leftwich could remove himself from the equation.

With the explanation given about Leftwich not being healty for the rest of the year, it seems that

the relationship between Del Rio and Leftwich is strained. I see Garrard playing from here on out.

Also, it looks as if Cortez Hankton will start seeing some playing time.

Hypothetical question. Let's say Garrard keeps the job in Jax all year and Byron is traded in the offseason as a starting QB somewhere. Who has more value at that point? Garrard starting in Jax or Lefty starting elsewhere?

:blackdot: (I'm going to have to drop one of em)In my opinion, I still think Leftwich is the better player, real life and fantasy. I'm not totally convinced that Garrard can go through an entire season successfully. (Yes I know that Leftwich hasn't been great over an entire season either)
