DB Kick/Punt Returner Thread (1 Viewer)

Rookie Kealoha Pilares, who has suddenly become the NFC leader in kickoff-return average, missed practice for the third consecutive day Friday with a quad injury he suffered in last week's win over the Colts. He was listed as questionable on Friday's injury report.

Pilares had a 101-yard kickoff return for a touchdown against the Lions two weeks ago.

Then last week he had a 76-yard kickoff return against the Colts that led to a key fourth-quarter field goal.

Head coach Ron Rivera said punt returner Armanti Edwards would get a shot at returning kickoffs if Pilares can't go on Sunday at Tampa Bay.

Joe McKnight is headed for an MIR on his right elbow Monday.

After Sunday's win over the Redskins, McKnight admitted he can't even extend his arm due to swelling in his elbow. It's a hyperextension.

Bills CB Aaron Williams left Sunday's game against the Titans with a knee injury in the third quarter and will not return.

Williams, the No. 34 overall pick in this year's draft, is done for the day. Leodis McKelvin has come on.

(Sherels) The Vikings have reduced CB Cedric Griffin's snaps due to performance.

Griffin wasn't on the Week 13 injury report, but didn't play in the base defense during the Vikings' final two possessions in Sunday's loss to the Broncos.

The Florida Times Union suggests that Deji Karim is "falling out of favor" after being a healthy scratch in Week 13.

btw, I don't know if anybody actually reads this thread, but if you aren't watching walking dead on amc, check it out -- pretty good.

just be warned there's plenty of zombie gruesomeness.

I'm a big fan of this thread. Thanks for the work you do here.

I hate The Walking Dead. Too much walking and not enough dead. Just because they go crazy in the last two minutes of the season after a dozen hours of lousy acting, hand wringing, and looking for some girl doesn't a good show make. The idea is awesome. The execution not so much.

But enough with this hijack. :banned:

http://www.buffalorumblings.com/2011/12/6/2615064/bills-vs-chargers-justin-rogers-could-start-at-cornerback

When the Buffalo Bills square off against the San Diego Chargers this weekend, don't be surprised if rookie seventh-round pick Justin Rogers is starting at cornerback.

On Monday, head coach Chan Gailey told reporters that another rookie corner, second-round pick Aaron Williams, isn't as banged up as originally thought, but also that he's not sure that Williams will be available in Week 14. Williams had taken over as a starting corner since Terrence McGee landed on Injured Reserve with a knee injury.

When Williams went down two days ago against Tennessee, the Titans immediately went after his replacement, Leodis McKelvin, with deep balls. That wasn't a problem then, given that the Titans don't have a viable deep passing attack.

Philip Rivers and Vincent Jackson, however, are one of the elite deep passing combinations in the NFL. McKelvin will have to play, even if it's just as the nickel back, and if Monday Night Football was any indication, the so-so Chargers are still very capable of taking full advantage of bad cornerback play. Don't be surprised if the Bills try to limit their attacks on McKelvin by putting Rogers outside in base packages and giving McKelvin safety help in nickel and dime looks

Williams suffered a knee injury last Sunday, and is expected to miss the contest against the Chargers. Leodis McKelvin will assume the starting role with the rookie sidelined.

Fred Robbins, Chris Long and Quinn Porter did not practice today either. Long did not practice last week because his ankle; he's keeping some wear and tear off for game time this week. Robbins saw his snap count reduced last week, and Porter is dealing with an oblique strain.

Browns WR/KR Josh Cribbs left Thursday's game in the second quarter with a groin injury.

Jets coach Rex Ryan said Friday that Joe McKnight (elbow, questionable) will be a game-time decision in Week 14 against the Chiefs.

The Vikings are expected to get cornerback Asher Allen back this week. Allen is far from an elite player, but, all things considered, he's a big upgrade from Benny Sapp, who was out of work a month ago.

Allen, who missed last week's game because of a shoulder injury, has improved as a cover guy. He's also a smart, instinctive player. If he can improve his tackling, he'll make a nice nickel back some day.

With Allen back in the lineup, that allows Sapp to play in the nickel, which the Vikings will use a lot against the Lions' multiple-receiver sets. Without Allen, the Vikings would have to use Sapp in the base and then choose between a rookie (Brandon Burton) or a special teams player (Marcus Sherels) to play in the nickel.

Kickers:

Josh Scobee - K - Jaguars

Source: Florida Times Union Dec 12 - 12:16 PM

Josh Scobee strained his groin in warmups prior the Jaguars' Week 14 win over the Bucs. Scobee was able to make all five of his extra points, but left kickoff duties up to linebacker Russell Allen in the fourth quarter.

----------------

- Ravens K Billy Cundiff (calf) admitted he was at less than 100 percent in Sunday's win over the Colts. Cundiff made his only field-goal attempt, a 36-yarder, and all three of his extra points. But he didn't handle kickoff duties in the second half i

Vikings CB Cedric Griffin was benched in the first quarter of Sunday's loss to the Lions. Titus Young blew by Griffin for a 57-yard score with just under 10 minutes to go in the opening frame. Griffin didn't see the field again. Benny Sapp took over opposite Asher Allen and Marcus Sherels came on in the slot.

Curious about the Jags and Bills KR situations.

With Deji Karim in the doghouse and inactive the last few weeks, Cecil Shorts was doing the KRs but I think he's hurt now. They say Dillard will be the PR, but who's the KR? Dujuan Harris?

The Bills are rotating kick returners every week it seems. From Spiller to Brad Smith to Leodis McKelvin and now last week, CB Justin Rogers. Will they stick with him again this week? Kinda noticeable that every time a guy gets more PT on offense or defense, they take them off returns. Spiller is now their RB1, Smith is starting at WR2, and McKelvin after being benched is back starting at CB.

Cowboys re-signed WR/KR Dwayne Harris.

RE: BILLS

without reading anything about it I'd just guess they pulled mckelvin and spiller off the returns because they're starting and you'll see more of whatshisname from last week on kicks.

I think harris was returning kicks for jags with karim inactive, but that's just from memory.

I believe shorts was pr, previously, with karim on kr.

Bills benched McKelvin again. Any chance this means he gets more work at KR?
well, it's possible, but he didn't play last week and they only had him on punts, with nickel corner RAWGERSS!!! on kicks, so I wouldn't be rolling any dice on it unless you get some definitive word.in other news, sherels ended up as a starting corner with the asher allen injury, but they had harvin back on most returns with sherel on punts -- so, that's something to keep an eye on.anyway, with only a week to play I hope this thread has been at least a little useful to somebody, and I want to wish everybody an awesome xmas, and good luck in all your superbowls!!!maybe we can do it again next year.

So, to go back to the original title of the thread, we have these DB's who also return punts/kicks:

Patrick Peterson

Lardarius Webb

Antonio Cromartie

Brandon Boykin

Danieal Manning

The question is, which of these will pile up good DB stats, and then have PR/KR as icing on the cake?

I dont think Manning will be returning kicks for Houston this year. He stopped doing them late last season and I don't think he has done it yet in camp.

I also see there is talk of moving Cromartie to safety. How would that affect his status? Is he still the KR?

ugh i hate that I have to read this list as i hate return yard points but I appreciate the list as i am in a dynasty that awards these points and at a decent bonus too for tds

just a heads up for another possible IDP returner, and a situation that may need watching for clarification:

McCourty (CB-NE) took one KR for 28 yards in the season opener. maybe someone that saw the game can let us know if he was in as a true return guy, or if it was a squib/ onside etc that he just happened to pick up? also from the box score: edleman took all three PR chances and slater took another KR.

yeah, slater has returned a few kicks, so that's not anything new, and edelman was a regular punt returner last year.

just from vague memory, I think mccourty's return was the first kickoff, but I'd have to look that up.

their return game is kind of fluid, and it wouldn't surprise me i fthey were hoping demps could fill that role, but I'd be skeptical that mccourty becomes a regular returner while he's a starting corner.

I think they'd rather either rotate, or let somebody like a slater or woody cover it.

Just verified via Game Rewind. It was TEN's first kickoff after their score, early 1st quarter. And yes Devin McCourty was the KR on that kick, standing in the back of the endzone.

I agree with the above, expect fluidity here, at least until we see some predictable patterns.

Time to add some more info to the mix for your consideration.

I drafted Patrick Peterson as my key IDP DB and thus far he's far from a difference maker. Hasn't busted one PR yet, but he's getting the quantity (10 PRs). I have to keep the faith he can make an impact in the return game while still accruing points with INTs, defended passes and solo tackles on Defense. The defensive contribution has been non-existent and has depressed his value to date.

Based on NFL.com stats, the only DB's to hold both KR/PR jobs are:

Javier Arenas, KC- has both roles, but making little impact as a DB.

Marcus Sherels, MIN - Only one KR, but holding the PR role.

Leodis McKelvin, BUF- Has both jobs and very effective in both roles. Only 35 snaps on defense.

Adam Jones, CIN- His PR TD is 81 yards worth of his 98 total PR yardage on 5 PR total. I'm not buying...

Jim Leonhard, DEN- If you get points for Fair Catches, he's your guy.

Anyone seeing anything else out there?

you need to get a starter who also returns, and that's a tough ticket - depending on league scoring, of course.

josh wilson was a sensation, a couple years ago, but he inherited a starting role due to injury.

I'd say best you can hope for right now is a favorable scoring system, and confluence of factors, like nickel corner playing a spread team with a noodle legged kicker.

I'll edit in some kicking stats after lunch.

here are some kr stats

I'm looking for teams that will give me 4 kr (ko - tb)

nyg 5.0 krpg

hou 4.6

cin 4.0

det 3.7

phi 3,5

no 3.4

cle, jax, and dal have a crummy tb%, but too few ko to date to make the list.

if any of these teams were projected to score around 5x in a game they might be added.

Rams CB Janoris Jenkins is expected to take over as the primary punt returner with Danny Amendola (collarbone) sidelined.

I'm issuing a fantasy alert!! on cb/kr brandon boykin (phi).

could possibly play full time snaps against the det spread wr attack, in theory the det offense could possibly provide some kr opps, and they let up a kr td in each of their last 2 games.

Can anyone give a little more info on Boykin? Is he the nickel back here and primary kick returner?
