DeAngelo Williams (1 Viewer)

From a non-homer perspective I can't see why they would when they have Stewart and Goodsen
They would tag him to get something out of him leaving I imagine. But Everyone around here expects him to be gone, so it would be a bit of a gamble to slap a tag on him, after wards you can't trade him you've blown it.IMHO (H standing for 'H'omer) 90% sure he's gone, 50/50 on the tag

This is exactly my thinking, as well. Full disclosure, I have a vested fantasy/dynasty interest in them parting ways (UO alumn and Stewart stock holder), so I'm trying to sort out conflicting reports--opinions, really--that seem to argue both ways as to what's going to happen with DW.

Panthers homers, what are you hearing?
I'm hearing...Jerry Richardson screwing up the negotiations.Honestly this can't be answered until we have a labor contract. If salaries are substantially reduced, then there may not be many teams with enough of a cap to sign him. Jerry positioned the team via salary dump last year to be in a competitve position under the new agreement.

Wait. But, the franchise designation ends on February 24th, right? My question doesn't pertain to whether they'll get him in free agency. It's whether he will be tagged before the deadline, which is independent of the CBA.

Not really...assuming the franchise tag and free agency end up operating as normal, DW isn't going to sign the tender offer that comes with the franchise tag. This is going to be his last big contract...so either someone will trade for him, or he'll walk away; CAR would almost assuredly pull the offer if they are unable to trade him...but the least likely option is he ends up signing the tender, back in a timeshare in CAR, another year older, hoping to avoid injury so he can get to another FA period.

TBH, the panthers are better off tagging the guy who sells the beer in the stands at this point. They might as well just drop the entire team and import the Stalingrad Kalinkas to play for them.

Tough call but imho I don't think they tag him only because I'm not sure they could get much for him in a trade. Maybe a 2nd rounder but given the rb market i think that would even be a tough sell. And if they have trouble trading him its a heck of a lot of salary to carry.

When is the deadline to apply franchise/transition tags? I would think it's got to be pretty soon, given the rash of tags that has popped up the past few days.

When they tagged Peppers and after wards had to eat an enormous 1 year salary... I'd say they blew it... Should have cut him loose... D-Will situation could be similar..

Apples and OrangesPeppers was $16.7m and knew he would be starting and has 4-5 years of peak performance left, Williams' tag would be about $8.1m, and his next contract will likely be his last due to his age (28 in August). Williams isn't going to sign his tender this year to play for $8.1m when he could let the Panthers try to trade him, or be forced to rescind the tag if he hasn't signed it by camp and they need to sign their rookies.

Again, there is no LIKELY scenario that results in Dwill playing for the Panthers under the 1 yr tender. Both sides have incentive to work on a trade/not complete the signed tender agreement.

Really? Totally disagree. Everything Deangelo has said indicates he wants to stay with Carolina, likes how he's teamed with Stewart, etc. Pains me to say it as a Deangelo/Stewart owner, but I highly doubt he would leave a franchise offer of $8.1 mil unsigned.

I completely disagreeYou talk as if D-Will is on his last legs and Peppers is a spring chicken... Peppers is 31D-Will is 27D-Will is still a very good RB and will likely be the biggest offensive FA this off season.. Williams has also said he wants to stay and play here... So there is incentive for him to sign.Peppers on the other hand knew he wanted to go, The Panthers tried to move him and couldn't, and got stuck with his price tag after Peppers reluctantly signed..I'm really not seeing your point here..Peppers signed reluctantlyI think D-Will will sign as wellPeppers if in his 'prime' is 31 years oldD-Will is only 27Panthers were trying to move Peppers and got stuck with the tabPanthers are obviously trying to move D-Will, and may be stuck with the tab if they tag him.Peppers is likely on his last big contractD-Will is likely looking for his

Williams has finished the last 2 years on IR. Semi reason to be concerned I guess.
Agreed.... If he could stay healthy, he'd have a stronger chance of being tagged.. Who wants to guarantee that kind of money to someone who may not be there to earn it..Strong argument against D-Will getting tagged here ^

You can't compare the ages between a rb and a DE. apples and oranges. Do you realize how much more a rb gets hit than a de, how much more damage they incur over years of guys flying at them? Peppers is older, but his body is probalby much younger, and he plays a position that has much longer longevity.A rb's shelf life ends at 30 for the most part. There's a reason why the avg life span of a rb is less than half of most nfl players. DW has one good contract left in him.

D-Will is a young 27 however, with only 841 career carries.

And so did peppers....

And that's my point..

I could see you pointing out the difference in wear between RB and DE if they were the same age. But Peppers is 4 years older.

I totally understand, what's to gain here since Stewart can put the team on his back. If you're not a Goodson fan then you're probably comfy that they can get a suitable backup to stewart in the draft.

I imagine the correct move is to tag him.

Each CBA seems to bring a big increase in the salary cap so for year 1 this could simply be filled by that swell and not negatively impact the makeup/building of the team.

If they are in rebuild mode, then they don't have all that many players that should be commanding big money deals and are going to be filling up with young unproven types that don't get as much.

Wear him down. He'd enjoy it.

Let him take pressure off of one of the million QBs they drafted last year and whatever one they take this year.

Let him be an example to all the youngins'

And then there's always the enormous trade value he would only have if he's shown to be an integral part of the team.

I don't think the Panthers are all that good. There is a minimum to the cap as well and overpaying one guy is no big deal; he can be cut next year. Overpaying many to reach the minimum is crippling in a few years.

I guess my thinking is when you have precious few commodities, you don't let one just walk away-like Peppers.

I am going to ask again for anyone to answer, if the Panthers knew that there starting center and defensive end were both unrestricted free agents this year why didnt they trade DWill when they had the chance? They have been adamant about building through the draft and grooming players in which they have done with both of these guys so they should have known they would have to use their tag on one of them not a running back.

So now they are going to let him walk when they could have had at least a 4rth from GB or NE.

Maybe they still get a nice compensatory pick.

This. We probably get a 3rd for Peppers, so probably a 4th for DW with the possibility of a 3rd depending on who signs him and for how much.

Thats if thats part of the new CBA.

No reason for it not to be. As far as we know, it's not even under discussion.

Reading, I get the impression everyone is pleased with it-don't you?I can remember some gripes when power teams got several picks like the rich get richer, so maybe they try to limit the total number but even still I think that's doubtful.

 I think there's a ton of underutilized talent on Carolina's roster that has been held hostage by the coaching staff and QB's.

if any one team in the NFL could have used a good franchise QB the last 3-4 years it was the Panthers. I think that was the only missing piece, but a huge one.

It's Kalil, to the surprise of no one. Richardson goes the cheap route when it comes to his team but he's working overtime to get every nickel he can out of a new CBA.
