Dear Baltimore Ravens (1 Viewer)

An article posted on Pro Football Talk this afternoon hints that Phil Savage wants to slap Derek Anderson with the highest possible RFA tender. That means a team could potentially forfeit their 1st and 3rd round draft picks to sign Anderson.

PFT Rumor Mill

I would give up a first and a third in a heartbeat... even if (especially if) the Ravens had a top 5 pick. I assume other homers of teams with crappy QBs feel the same?

EDIT: Changed franchise tag to RFA tender

Why would you want to give up a top 5 pick instead of a later pick?

I would love to have him in ATL, but a 1st and a 3rd... I dunno, that's pretty steep. Plus, if he did get franchised, don't you have to match the average salary of the top 5 highest paid players at that position as well? And the team that traded for him would have to accept that contract?

Much as I like him, I'd rather spend the money on a top-flight o-line.

he's not going to get franchised, if he got franchised a team would have to give up two first round picks for him, if I remember right. He's a restricted free agent, teams would have to give a first and a third, like the turner situation last year. I hope the vikes go after him myself, most of there first round picks bust anyways.

A team can negotiate and sign Anderson to whatever contract he's willing to accept. Browns have the right to match that offer. If they don't they get the team's 1st and 3rd rounder.

I don't think the egos in that organization would allow themselves to spent a 1st & 3rd for a guy they drafted in the 7th and subsequently cut. It makes sense, but I'd be surprised if it happens.

Don't go too crazy over him. I really don't believe he is worth that much (even a first rounder by itself is too high). I watched him play a lot at Oregon State and while he does have an arm he has a tendency to make some really bad plays. He seems to have put it together and is more than holding his own but I would not bet the future of my franchise on him until I saw that he was able to do it again. Too many teams are willing to take a shot on a one-year-wonder and end up paying for it for years.

No way I would give up a first and a third for DA when a guy like McNabb will likely be on the FA market. Why any team like the Vikings or Ravens would even consider it is beyond me. Yeah, he's looked good for ONE season so far, but the Vikings and the Ravens don't have a tandem like Braylon Edwards and Kellen Winslow. If it was just a first, then maybe, but two picks for a QB who has one season under his belt? A little stiff methinks. Especially with all the holes the Vikings and the Ravens have.

I can think of a dozen teams who could use him as he's a better option than their current QB. There's only one McNabb.

Yup. I like Anderson but do not want the next Scott Mitchell on our hands either. Phil looks like he's playing his hand perfectly to this point.

Alex Smith would LOVE to be a one year wonder. Instead it is suckage year after year.

LOLthe Ravens had him once, let him go.
Billick is truely an idiot. Who did they keep so as to let Anderson go? That Wright bum? How does Billick still get a free pass?
You sound like you're from Baltimore -- any good player the Ravens draft is due to Ozzie, but all the failed personnel decisions are Billick's fault.Anderson was a 6th round pick (meaning any other team could have drafted him as late as the 5th round) and the Ravens were going to sign him to the practice squad when he got snatched up by Phil Savage (who, as head of Baltimore's scouting until he became Cleveland's GM) was probably the only other guy in the NFL who would have signed him to an active roster and prevented him from clearing waivers and making it to Baltimore's practice squad.

There are very few times when a very young QB with a terrific season under his belt are available. Most of the guys that have done what Anderson has turned out to be at least pretty good.

mcnabb would be nothing but a band aid, I don't want him anyways he's always hurt and he can't move anymore which is what made him good. How good would edwards and winslow look if DA wasn't throwing to them? Its goes both ways imo...

So I am guessing that you are not interested in McNabb's famous bounce pass.

I don't understand where all this Franchise Talk is coming from... Probably PFT. But it's bogus. Cleveland COULD franchise him but that would mean paying him 12-13 million next season. No way.

If they tender him, they have many more options. They let other teams dictate his value. IF another team signs him (which is highly unlikely), they have the option of matching the contract or letting him go and receiving 1st and 3rd round draft picks (great compensation for DA).

Or if no one signs him (which is more likely) they retain him for one season at the appropriate price of 2.3 million next year.

How can anyone think the Browns might actual slap the Franchise Tag on him?

the PFT article didn't even say anything about francising him, I think the OP was confused, it said....
General Manager Phil Savage says he's leaning toward giving quarterback Derek Anderson the high contract tender of $2.562 million after the season, meaning that a team that wants to acquire Anderson would either have to work out a trade with the Browns or give the Browns first- and third-round draft choices.

Rarely do I agree with a Browns fan. :P But in this case, I agree totally.DA is playing great at the moment, but I still believe he is playing over his head. I keep waiting for that 5 pick game to come along and blow up the Browns playoff chances.Maybe I will keep waiting, but I still wouldn't mortgage my future on this kid. I hope he proves me wrong. Great story.Savage has been pure genius this season. Easily executive of the year. GD it. :coffee:

Yeah, the OP is an idiot. When he said franchise he meant RFA. Still, Baltimore should go get him back. Or Troy smith should turn out to be awesome. I could just see McNabb as the next Steve McNair. One good season, choke in the playoffs, play unbelievably awful and then get mercy benched.

Anyway OP is an idiot...
