Deck Cleaners and Stains (1 Viewer)

used a Flood solid stain on my deck.. started chipping and peeling within 11 months. There is not much traffic on the deck...

Not impressed.

I have used this product on a shed and on a deck. Used clove for both and is a nice look.

Both were new construction. Pretty well sucked it up. Expensive but by the way it holds up and looks, well worth it.

Every 7 to 10 years is well worth the price.

Does not peel. Must have sun to "cure" the finish.

As of now, I would use nothing else.

Am told when it is ready for a redo, you only clean it and apply.

Great timing.

I fought my deck all day. Tried two different strippers, and neither really seemed to work well. Scrubbed with brush, wokred in a pressure washer for a bit. Still have a lot of the old stain on the deck and it's not coming up easily.

Any recommendations?

We went from solid to transparent to clear. I think there are "warnings" for most solid stain that they are not for horizontal surfaces.

+1 for OneTime. Stuff really holds up well on my south-facing deck. For cleaning, I use an oxygen-based bleach that I scrub into the deck and hose off.

I've been using Flood stain for the past 4 years. I don't use a cleaner, just power wash the deck and apply the Flood stain with a roller. Does a nice job.

I went semi-transparent, cedar, and it looks great.
THISI used Floods for years but ACO did not have it this year so I went with Olympic Semi-Trans oil based cedar stain. My deck turned out better than ever!
I just took a few picks of my deck. I wish I had taken before pics because it looked horrible. The deck is 20 years old.http://www.flickr.com/photos/46677494@N03/5804724274/in/photostream/

Sand it with a light grade of sandpaper.
:goodposting: This was the only way I was able to get my old stain off. Not an easy task itself either as our railings have a lot of detail to them. Finally done with that craziness, time to stain this bad boy. I'm leaning towards Cabot's Semi Transparent 0300 series for the floor and skirting and am going to do a solid white on the railings to get a nice contrast. Will report back how this stuff works out.

I use Olympic premium.

Clean with TSP solution or a jug of deck cleaner and pressure washer first.

This is a ~30 year old cedar deck.

I've been told by deck builder friends that they love the people who pressure wash their decks because most of them use too much pressure and cause damage to the wood fibers. They say that oxygen bleach is the best thing to use. Brush it on, leave it for 5-10 minutes, brush again and rinse. I have yet to try it, so I don't know how it works or how easy it really is.

Always used Sikkens. I like it. I have only used the solid though.
