Delay of game and timeouts (1 Viewer)

This is something I've never understood about football.

For example tonight, Brett Favre looked pretty pissed that he didn't get to call a time out and lost the 5 yards on second down.

Especially in the 4th quarter of a game, I always think maintaining the three timeouts is a lot more important than losing 5 measley yards.

 can someone clear this up for me. It's something ive always wondered.

I think the answer is that Favre didn't want to call a time out or get a 5 yard penalty. They/he just didn't execute properly and they lost 5 yards. That's why he was pissed.

I don't understand it either. Cutler did it too, and obviously, he could have used the time out when they were driving at the end there.

Speaking of delay of game calls. There was a QB yesterday at the goalline who went back to pass but the play was blown dead for false start or time clock or something. So like many QBs he wanted to get the ball out of his hands so no DL will hit him. But after the whistle, after the play was over this QB threw the ball into the stands in the end zone. How is that not a delay of game penalty like a spike?

Didn't use the QBs name so this doesn't look like another Pats thingy. I was a little shocked that it wasn't a penalty compared to some of the nit picky ones they've called this season.

Not to stray too far off topic, but can someone explain that controversy over calling the time out during field goal kicks is?

What was the original purpose of that? Is it a new rule? What gives all of the sudden its such a big deal now?

Can someone explain the deal here?

There are huge threads on that if you want to do a search. They were quite extensive.

The same thught occured to me during the unmentioned game. Myself and a buddy came to the conclusion that if you spike the ball the refs have to chase the ball down as it bounces all over the field. If it's tossed into the stands while game play has stopped they need to bring in a new one. Essentially it doesn't delay the game because the game is already delayed to call out the penalty.

i've never understood the wasting of a timeout in a meaningless situation. if it's 3rd-and-1 at the opponent's 35, that's one thing. if it's 2nd-and-4 at your 40, why bother? yeah, it's better than 2nd-and-9, but you only get 3 timeouts.

i was also amazed at the ineptitude of brad childress' challenges sunday. what a waste.
