Delivery Question / Tipping (1 Viewer)

Ordered a crap ton of lawn stuff from Home Depot (mulch / bagged decorative rocks / garden fill). Enough that i wasn't going to rent a truck or pick it all up myself.

Guys show up today and ask where I want it dropped off. I point out the spot closest to where I'll be working and the back gate. Offer them a water / gatorade / etc..........but they decline, says they'll use the fork lift and since it's on pallets, it will be an easy move.

About 15 later I go to the front window and see the 2 guys manually moving all the stuff from the truck to my drive way. I trundle out and ask "WTF". He says the wrapping wasn't good and when they turned a corner most of it fell off the pallet, so they were moving with 2 hand dollies.

Took them about another 20 minutes to get it all out of truck and up my driveway.

They then came to the door and hand me the BIL. I give them a 20 and a couple of bottles of water for their effort.

Assuming that was not necessary, and was enough.

I told him that if he didn't call HD, I would on his behalf.

What was the question?

If $20 was enough for 2 guys?

Yeah, normally I would give them a 50% off coupon to the company (work clothing) I work for and a water/propel, but because HD messed up, I also gave them all i had which was $20 (2 X 5 and 1 X 10), as I don't usually carry cash.

A coupon? Yikes.

This is where vemo/zelle/Apple Pay are your friend. I tipped the AAA guy that help my daughter out in the rain via Apple Pay. Never saw the guy, as it happened across town. Couldn’t be easier.

I see everyone's points.

both guys were literally wearing our work pants. If they buy 2 new pairs this year he's up $40.

work for a multi brand company, I can usually find something that they are interested in from our 16 brands.

for christmas all my peeps (delivery drivers, bartender, mailman, garbage men, etc) get 16 50% off coupons to be used one of our brands.

50% off some of our stuff is good money, especially if you were in the market for said product.

Yeah. $20 for that much work probably isn't the worst tip they'll get that day. But I'd guess $20 each is more in line.

But also, it's a personal thing.

My wife seems to think it's 20% no matter what, so sometimes when we have something like a sofa delivery or other appliance that costs well into the hundreds, she thinks we need to tip over $100 for each guy.

That does sort of illustrate an issue with percentage. A guy working super hard to deliver bags of mulch for little money deserves a better tip than a guy who delivers a diamond ring in my opinion.

I do tend to factor the effort a lot on that kind of thing.

But then I will contradict myself as I don't do the same at a restaurant.

Never would have crossed my mind to tip them. Absolutely would have made sure they had water or Gatorade, their choice.
Doesn’t everyone carry a water bottle with them these days? Even if not, it was 20 minutes of work, they will survive that long without water.

I would have offered to fill up a cup of water for them if it was like 95 degrees out, but i don’t have bottled water or gatorade in my houses We have gone soft yall.

Idk why you assumed I meant a bottle of water or Gatorade. I'm old school. Solo cups and a giant thing of powdered Gatorade mix.

I also live in TX where it's often over 90. I don't think it's soft to be polite.

Would you tip on a delivery like that if everything went well for them? Or was the tip only due to the difficulty? I've only ever had one large item delivery to my home ever (a washing machine) and I did not tip. But I don't know if I was expected to, never thought of it. He did have to go down awkward stairs with the thing. But I just figured it was his job.

Coupon for 50% off a drink at the local 7/11 is a better idea imo

I personally would have given each guy $20 and a bottle of water. They ended up doing a lot of extra manual labor due to unforeseen circumstances and did what they can to accommodate you to the best of their ability. I personally would find the “tip” being in the form of discounted work clothing to be weird. I think giving coupons for free items or a gift card is an acceptable tip, but people routinely hand out discount coupons all of the time as an advertisement for free. In any case, if you didn’t have any more cash—I think you did fine. I would just maybe recommend spending a little time to give them a positive review

To be fair, 50% is a pretty decent discount. I mean, if you don't need work clothing it's completely worthless. Not saying it's great, but a little different than, say, 15% off. That would be more like a shameless "here take this piece of paper and then give me money".

So the extra work was not caused in any way by the OP, he ordered the stuff from HD and expects it to be delivered properly, but the pallets were not secured correctly.

So question, let's say the OP caused the issue, say his dog ripped off the plastic or his driveway has a steep incline which caused the pallets to fall or whatever the case may be, how much would you tip then?

I probably would have expected two guys and been prepared with $40 in cash so that’s what they would have gotten regardless. Unless they were tools and gotten nothing.

I am a generous tipper but $20 each is insane talk.

Personally I would have helped them and tipped them $10 each at most. I would have also given them water with out asking.

Although decades ago, my wife I both spent time in jobs where tips were critical. I get it. Now. When to tip sure has gotten out of hand. Feels like companies excuse to pay less and put payroll issues on the consumers. I spend 3000 on a new couch and pay for delivery. Now I got tip those hard working folks? What about the pharmacy? They always are busy and work hard. When I pick up 4 prescriptions do I tip them also? Pass on tipping delivery folks unless weird circumstances cause them serious work. Whatever I'm getting delivered I will prepare my home to make it as easy as possible. In my opinion, this tipping thing is getting silly. What about when I get my tires rotated? Tip them?

For stuff like that, any tip is commensurate with work done above and beyond, as well as general courteousness of the delivery crew. In most cases, you're getting $10 -$20 depending on the job, or getting nothing. I'll very rarely tip a small amount.

In the OP's example, I'd have probably tipped the same given the guys had to go above and beyond - and yes...I acknowledge it's HD's fault, but as a human, also recognize they didn't complain and just made it right by you, and that's worth something.

It depends for me. If the people do something to go above and beyond, I'll tip them. For example, my MIL recently moved near us and bought new furniture rather than moving her old stuff across country. This is the kind of stuff that is mostly, but not all the way assembled (bed frame, legs on couches/chairs, etc...). Because she has free labor (aka, me) she declined to pay extra to have them "install". When they delivered the furniture she was the only one there. They saw a little old lady and put it all together for her. I showed up as they were finishing up and dropped them each $20 with apple pay. Not necessarily because of the extra work but because they did it out of the kindness of their hearts.

If I have someone helping me for a longer period of time, like movers, I make sure they get food and a decent tip. It's been 15 years since my last move but they moved us from a 5 bedroom house to a 4 bedroom about 1 hour drive apart from each other and had everything loaded, moved, boxes put in the correct rooms, and beds put together within 4 hours. There were 3 guys there who got breakfast from McDonalds and $66 each (tipped 200 total).

What other option did they have? Just leave the stuff on the ground and drive away? Presumably they're getting paid by the hour so they're still getting paid for the work.
