Demetrius Williams... (1 Viewer)

Demetrius Williams seems to be rising up the charts @ WR. TSN has him listed as the #1 wideout in their issue last week, and Rob Rang (Link) has him going as the #3 overall WR to NYJ @ 2.03.

Why is he suddently become a hot target? Was he overly impressive @ a workout? Undervalued in previous rankings?

Good question why he has risen so much.

I do like him better than Sinorice Moss, but that's because I don't see Moss as a stud play maker who will have to be accounted for by 1 1/2 to 2 players - I see him more as a complimentary player.

Williams has a very nice combination of height/weight and has great hands, but he's a bit weak in the upper body - which may affect his ability to beat NFL CBs' bump on the line, and he can be lazy about catching the ball - which causes him to drop too many easy passes. His speed isn't great, but personally I think speed is way overrated for WRs (not that they can be turtles, but they don't have to run sub-4.3 40s either to be very good WRs).

If this kid gets serious in the weight room & decides that he needs to focus every play, he could be the 2nd or 3rd best WR coming out of this draft after re-evaluation in 3-5 years, but right now I see about 4 or 5 WRs that I would like to take a chance on before I went to Williams.

Personally, I think he was underrated before.

I won't have him near my #1, maybe around 5, but he's largely gone unnoticed by most boards.

Ive always had him right around #5. He's probably the best deep threat (right now) in this WR class, more because of his leaping ability, body control, and concentration- he's not a burner, but he's fast enough (deceptively even) and has a good burst off the line. He needs to bulk up and play more physical. Maybe they are seeing signs of this? He's one of the few WRs in this class that *could* be a #1 down the line.

He makes some absolutely dazzling catches in traffic deep down the field. His game was mostly running to an area knowing the ball was coming his way and then winning the competition for the ball. He adjusts to it in flight with excellent body control and position. He has freakishly long arms that go up and snatch the ball. He isn't much of a route runner, but that's something that is easier to develop than the strengths he already has. If I wasn't on the Marshall koolaid he would by WR3 on my list, but he's WR4 for me.

Moss is down a little further still.

Also, if they're comparing him to Chad Johnson, I see it too. But, CJ worked/works so very very hard on route running. I have no idea if Williams has that kind of heart and determination. If he does, he could be the best WR in this class when it's all said and done.

Combination of things, I think. First of all, he had an excellent week at the Senior Bowl, which caught plenty of attention. He showed natural ability to catch with his hands, and showed the ability and willingness to make catches all over the field.

Then, he surprised at the combine when NFL Personnel folks had a chance to see him up close and personal. The Ourlads people commented that he was:

'Bigger and thicker in person. Looks skinny on tape.'

In their most recent Newsletter, they listed him as the best 'run after catch' WR in this years class.

From a measurables standpoint, I'm pretty sure he had the longest arms, and some of the biggest hands of all the WR in the draft this year, ran a top-notch short shuttle (the indicator for change of direction speed), and had one of the better vertical jumps as well.

NFL Teams have been personally interviewing prospects over the past couple of weeks. I think it's likely the scouts who went to the Senior Bowl and Combine and took note of this guy had a chance to show him off to the rest of the personnel department for their respective team, and the more they see this kid up close vs the perspective they might have drawn of him from seeing tape highlights, it dispells any worries they might have had regarding his physical attributes. At least, that's my guess.

Bloom - I like many in this forum hold great respect for you & your opinions... question, do you write for TSN also? Your write-up here sounds quite similar to their's. (no sarcasm here - seriously asking)

Pros - hands, decent speed, height

Cons - route running, strength

It's his route running that has me down on him. Without elite speed he won't be able to run the fly routes all the time like he did in college and it will take him a few years to develop his route running. Not a guy who will be a starter anytime soon. His jumping ability to go up and get the ball is great, but he'll have much better competition in the NFL and I don't think he'll be as effective. I have a hard time putting him in my top 10 WR's.

Per the San Francisco Chronicle article yesterday on De La Salle alums Williams and Maurice Drew, his 40 time surprised people who thought speed was a weakness for him.

As someone else here mentioned, his Senior Bowl workouts really started his surge up the draft boards.

Who's Marshall? I looked him up in the TSN guide and there's no one listed by that name.

:lmao: Heavy doses of koolaid required. He's a converted safety from UCF, who blew up in the second half of last year, just flat dominated the Hawaii Bowl (MVP) then did the same in the Hula Bowl (MVP again). He's 6-4 runs a sub 4.5 (4.45 at his pro day, 4.55 at the combine), and he is physical, tough, aggressive and cocky. Great ball skills, raw, but the upside has some of us drooling unreasonably.

ETA: That's Marshall, Brandon Marshall.
