Derek Anderson - who is he? (1 Viewer)

Derek Anderson looked alright. Alright = Fantastic for a browns QB. He may have secured himself a job for the next season.

As for idiot redman, youre a perfect example of a person who only understands paper and not reality. The reality of the situation is Ben won the game easily, and id go as far as to agree that the ball was rising on him a bit, he was wearing gloves and ive seen him more accurate. But he still played a damn good game, rushing for a TD passing for a TD, no picks or fumbles. Yeah thats embarrassing.....youre an idiot.

I had to work last night and did not see the game. What is everyone's impression of how Derek Anderson played last night? His stat line looks decent but not great. Does he look like he could have some future dynasty value?
Strong arm, good accuracy, had some drops by WRs. Looked good.I'd pick him up (and I have) in Dynasty leagues.
That might be one of the biggest understatements of the year.
From the game recap:
Anderson was the victim of seven dropped passes.
Wow, that's almost half of his incomplete passes. Granted every QB has receivers make mistakes (and the weather and being used to Anderson vs. Frye, etc.), but that goes to his accuracy.Yes he didn't "go deep", but he looked good enough in his first ever start to warrant future consideration as a starter.

i wanted to resurrect this thread to see if anybody else has thoughts on mr anderson. picked him up as a flyer and i think he's got some good potential to be a bye week filler.

any thoughts on his 2007-2008 potential?

Well, Cleveland spent a 1st rounder on Brady Quinn, so I think DA's future as a starter isn't that solid. Maybe they'll trade him to the Lions after Kitna has his head torn off.

:P At best he gets a year as the starter, like Kitna did in Cincy in 2003 in front of Palmer, before moving on.

I'll be surprised if he plays more than 3 more games. He has a lot of potential, but also a lot of flaws. His mental abilities are still below par. He doesn't audible well and he'll throw into coverage. Also his accuracy is suspect. On the plus side, he has a rocket arm. He has one of the quickest releases I've seen. He's got good vision and makes good progression in his reads. This offense is very complex and if the team asks him to do too much, he'll implode. If they ask him not to lose, he may hold up long enough for Quinn to be ready. But he will throw ints more than the average QB. He's surrounded by a ton of talent that will make things easier, but the plan is to have Quinn start in a few weeks and I'm willing to think he'll throw just enough ints to help them stick to it.

If he has decent follow-up games I would expect to see him play the rest of the year. They want to keep their franchise rookie on the bench as long as possible.

No offense Widdow, but that's not the plan at all. The plan was originally to pick a winner in training camp between Frye and Anderson, trade the loser and keep Dorsey to mentor Quinn. It's been pretty much an open secret that the Browns were planning to play Quinn against either Miami or after the bye. That upset most of the Sharks on this board including Joe Bryant. It also upset a lot of Browns fans, but after last week it seems at least to me it was the right thing to do. From what I hear after the fact, the Browns brass was completely expecting Anderson to beat out Frye in camp. Frye was the Pop Warner version of Michael Vick and the staff felt he had already achieved what he was going to achieve and he had way too many bad habits for the team to correct. It was thought that Anderson would make improvements in both his accuracy and his understanding of the offense in the off-season to make his skill set more valuable to the team than Frye's. That was a perfect scenario because trade wise Frye was worth more to the NFL than Anderson. The Browns did make inquiries to trade Frye before the season started and I'm told Atlanta made an offer, but Anderson did nothing to show he improved at all since last year and the team was stuck with 2 QB's that they didn't feel confident in. Dorsey was cut because the team felt that he wouldn't be picked up by anyone and it would give them more time to evaluate Frye and Anderson and sign him back when they made a decision. Although Anderson helped the Browns score 51 points against the Bengals, it was pretty obvious that he made a ton of mistakes. Winslow and Edwards made enough great catches to make him look much better than he is. He was inaccurate on even the shortest of passes and he threw into double and triple coverage a few times. HE DEFINITELY COULD IMPROVE, but it won't be in time to stop the plan for Quinn. He's got too much to work on and too tough of a schedule.

The Browns have to get at least one more win (presumably against Oakland), and Anderson has to look effective in at least two of the next three games to hold on through the bye. Obviously, no one expects the Browns to really do much this season, but as long as there's a sense that they could piece something together, you owe it to your players to chase it, and that would mean sticking with Anderson as long as he produces. You don't go to Brady Quinn until you're ready to concede your season, or Anderson looks totally ineffective. Right now, if he plays well, I think he stays. And he's certainly got some weapons...it just comes down to if he has any talent.

I think Anderson keeps the job as long as he's effective & the Browns have a shot at something for THIS year. I think hte Bengals win was really a "feel-good" kind of win, and it could carry over. There's really no long-term QB controversy, and if the Browns want to go with Quinn, they should pick a good spot to do it. As long as the team is playing well, and the QB is playing well, that's not the time to do it.

Of course, I think Crennel is not a very good coach, so who knows what will happen.
