I assume everyone here is fairly familiar with Hagan. Outstanding college career at AZ. State, 4.48 at the combine, 36 inch vert. At the time I assumed he'd go mid 2nd round...only to see him fall to the middle of the 3rd round. Now, entering that mythical 3rd year where all receivers break out, he's only behind Earnest Wilford and Tedd Ginn. Wilford's shown himself to be a football player, Ginn may have the potential, but I can see Hagan passing him early into the starting lineup. Anyone see him turning in a good season?

He's a decent candidate for a flyer pick simply because he's an early draft pick entering his third season in a fairly wide open situation where someone could seize the WR1 role and put up some points. Just don't get your hopes up. He hasn't done anything to warrant optimism since being drafted by the Dolphins and is probably at the end of his rope. I don't think he'll be on the roster next season if he doesn't make major strides this year.

I wouldn't bet on him. Too inconsistent for the Parcells regime. Makes the tough catch & misses the easy one.

Considering the #### QBs and coaches this guy has gotten to work with, I think the first few scout reports here are a little harsh.

All 3 Miami WRs are worth a bench/sleeper pick this year because someone has to see some targets and if you hit on the right one your going to significantly out perform your draft slot used.

Despite having Hagan on a roster, I'm not a fan. Here's why: I recall watching a Dolphins game 2 years ago and saying aloud "man, that TE is really slow - and he still dropped that easy pass." Then I realized it was Hagan. The guy just doesn't move well enough to be a starting WR. He just sort of plos along out there. Hagan = done.

Could be a good sleeper if you're desperate. Should slide into the #2 WR role for week 12 with Smith, Barden and Nicks out and with rookie Calhoun showing next to nothing. Eli certainly seemed to look his way several times last night.

He couldn't make the roster in Miami when Miami was even worse than they are now. There is a reason he has been theWR4/5/6 everywhere he has been. If not for injuries he wouldn't even be in a Giants uniform. If you think you can squeeze 12-15 points out of Hagan as a starter I think you have serious injuries or you are not being realistic.

I undestand why folks do this but not every soldier that takes the next position on the frontline is as good as the person they replace. I don't know if folks post this so they can feel better about being torched by a major inury or misery loves company but if you decide to roll him out there as your starter this week...you're going into the flop all in with 10-4o and trying to feel good about it...good luck.

A high number of targets can make an average ability receiver look pretty darn good from a fantasy perspective. I could see Davone Bess kind of #s.

9 targets last night in his first game as a back Giant. How can you say he won't be worth a look? No one is saying he is going to put up Steve Smith or Nicks numbers but ANY receiver that gets 9 targets a game has a chance to be a contributer in FF.Edited: First game this year as a Giant

Manningham still looks like the WR to own.

http://www.rotoworld.com/content/Home_NFL.aspx

Giants WR Steve Smith (pectoral) said Monday that he does not anticipate being a full-time player when he returns to game action.

"I’ll definitely be limited for the rest of this season, I’m sure," he said. It sounds like Smith's injury -- initially reported as a strain -- was more serious than the team let on. He's going to end up missing at least four games, and the Giants apparently plan to play Smith cautiously down the stretch. He's no longer looking like a surefire fantasy starter in Weeks 14-16.

I had to dust off this thread. Crazy but Derek Hagan looked like Jerry Rice last night.

Oakland WR situation is wide open, I think he may be worthy of a roster spot in deep deep leagues.

i don't see how he could get there. Seems like he's the least talented of the bunch. Ford, DHB, Murphy, Schilens, and Moore will all be ahead of him in the pecking order.

Preseason can be tricky. It is easy to fall for good numbers. Until I see Hagan move up the depth chart, I have no need for him.

:goodposting: Ford didn't play last night. Good effort, but I agree he's not moving ahead.

Hagan has only Glass Schilens to beat out to become the possession WR if he keeps up this type of play. Ford and Moore will be the deep threats, but this team has been starving for a reliable chain mover. Murphy and DHB don't have the consistency to beat out the other four for either of these roles. DHB however, will be getting the Coach Davis scholarship for at least the early part of the season, so he'll be an obstacle if he's anything other than awful.

:goodposting: This makes the most sense to me.

A threesome of Ford, Moore and Hagan probably gives them the best chance to move the chains.

Reading this thread, people are talking about guys and who should start and it makes a lot of sense, but we are talking about the the Raiders here and sense and Raiders should not be used in the same sentence. DHB, who may be the worst wr'er in the NFL WILL start and therefore ruin a spot for someone else who would be MUCH better and make the team better, if I was a Raiders fan I would be hoping for a torn ACL for DHB just to make sure Al does not force him into the lineup.

Hagan’s a nice story this preseason, and he’s certainly a lock to make the team. What his role will be is still a mystery. If starting wideouts are based on preseason performance, and not draft status or potential, then Hagan deserves a starting nod. Does he get it? Not likely.

It will be interesting to see if Hue Jackson’s credo of performance over potential carries any weight when setting the opening day starting lineup. Hagan has outplayed incumbents Darrius Heyward Bey & injured Chaz Schilens and Louis Murphy. And Hagan did it on money catches over the middle and has looked the playmaker in the process. Murphy is safely on the team, but Hagan’s performance pushes Schilens on the edge of the roster bubble, imo.

Hagan is still a young veteran. Hungry to prove himself, and a dedicated professional always working on his craft, he sets an example for the younger receivers. In a way, he reminds me of a former washout receiver, Brandon Lloyd. (no, I am not directly comparing them here). Sometimes it takes a change of scenery and a fresh opportunity to showcase ability and potential. He’s displayed good route running, toughness over the middle, and solid hands in securing the ball even while getting pummeled. On that nifty TD catch, he seemed to take a page out of Taiwan Jones library of moves and stopped on a dime, setting up the defender to slide in the dirt, and then balanced his way to the house.

I want to believe that Hue Jackson has complete autonomy of the team, but I know better. Al Davis rules over this franchise at every level. If it’s Jackson’s call, I think we see Hagan, Ford and Moore in the starting lineup. Those 3 give this team the best chance to win. But if Darrius Heyward Bey is lined up as starter on opening day, his best effort will be as a decoy and blocker. If that is the case, then we discover Hue Jackson’s real power over this team. If actions on the field speak louder than draft status and potential, then Hagan should see the field early and often. He’s earned it.

you guys are assuming Oakland will go with a possession WR. I don't think Hagan only has to beat out Schilens. Murphy, once he gets healthy will also be in that battle. Although, I expect Moore, Ford, and DHB to have the most value. Seems like DHB has gotten better? DHB and Ford are the starters, and I'd expect Moore to be in the slot. Maybe Schilens will be mixed in, but I just don't see how Hagan will find any room. He's 6th on the depth chart right now...

I would not discount Murphy. He has been the only consistent WR in Oakland for years. He makes a good #2 WR for the Raiders. I know everyone is high on Moore but it is tough for rookies to beat out vet WRs. There is a little time involved for WRs to transition into the NFL. As a Raider fan, I hope Moore is as great as the hype. Oakland really needs a true #1 WR.

I'm assuming that before the season starts, the Raiders will hold a 100 m dash with all their WRs, the order the guys finish will determine the depth chart.

Hagan has a chance to be what everyone's been hoping from Glass Schilens the last three years. A big reliable possession target. I really like the guy's attitude. He could be a steal if he gets significant playing time. Campbell has displayed a connection with him in preseason.

Hagan makes most of opportunity with Raiders

By JOSH DUBOW, AP Sports Writer 11 hours, 18 minutes ago

ALAMEDA, Calif. (AP)—When training camps opened, Derek Hagan(notes) was just worried about where he would get a job.

Hagan had to wait more than a week in a stressful period after the start of camps to sign a contract with the Oakland Raiders.

Now with only one exhibition game and no practices left before the final cut-down day, Hagan appears to have solidified a spot on the Raiders roster with his hard work in practice and performance on the field.

With five years of NFL experience with Miami and the New York Giants, Hagan provides veteran leadership for a young group of receivers in Oakland.

More important has been his production, most notably his six catches for 121 yards and a touchdown in an eye-opening performance last Sunday night against New Orleans.

“I know what I’m doing,” Hagan said. “I know how to get open and the quarterbacks, they have the confidence in me to get open and make those plays. I just got to keep doing it.”

Hagan has done it so far, making big plays almost daily on the practice field and translating that into the exhibition games so far.

He has 10 catches for 195 yards and a touchdown in the preseason—tying for the third-most catches and ranking second in yards in the league for the exhibition season.

Hagan told quarterback Jason Campbell(notes) when he joined the team that he just needed an opportunity to show what he can do in the NFL.

He is sure making the best of it so far.

“I think he did a great job in a great opportunity of putting himself in the best position possible,” Campbell said “I think he’s a great guy. He’s a great teammate and we’ll see what happens. But he definitely made a statement.”

With Louis Murphy(notes) expected to miss at least the opener with an undisclosed injury and Chaz Schilens(notes) sidelined by a knee injury, Hagan could have an important role for Oakland when the season starts Sept. 12 in Denver.

“I’ve always thought he was a good football player,” coach Hue Jackson said. “Some players just need to get in the right environment to let their talent show. Obviously, it’s been great since he’s been here. So, I’m very happy for him. He’s done a tremendous job and he’s represented himself well.”

Despite a stellar career at Arizona State with 258 catches for 3,939 yards and 27 touchdowns, Hagan was only a third-round pick in 2006 by Miami.

He started one game in three seasons with the Dolphins, before playing sparingly as a backup with the Giants in 2009.

He was cut after the final exhibition game last season before the Giants brought him back midway through the year because of injuries.

After catching 24 passes for 223 yards and a touchdown in seven games last season for the Giants, Hagan became a free agent in the offseason.

As other players signed deals and teams were deep into installing new systems, Hagan was home waiting for his phone to ring.

Because of injuries to some of Oakland’s regular wideouts, the Raiders called and ended up signing Hagan to a contract on Aug. 7.

“It was a little stressful just because free agency started so late,” he said. “Normally, free agency starts way back in March, and now it started at the end of July, August, and it was stressing me out because other guys were in camp and I was still sitting at home trying to figure out where I wanted to go. I wasn’t sure if I was going to sign back with New York, but you know, they didn’t give me a call. So after that, I was just like, `OK, it’s time to go somewhere else.”’

Hagan has been a needed addition in Oakland. His 85 career catches are more than any other wide receiver on the team and he also has far more NFL experience than his cohorts.

In a group of receivers known for speed with blazers such as Darrius Heyward-Bey(notes) and Jacoby Ford(notes), Hagan is known for a different attribute.

Shortly after he arrived, Jackson praised him with a dig at some of the other players, saying Hagan understands that it’s more important to study the playbook at night than to play video games.

Hagan said he learned that from veterans Chris Chambers(notes) and Marty Booker(notes) in Miami and he wants to teach that to his new teammates in Oakland.

“You got to get your study time in,” Hagan said. “This is my job, this is my profession and it’s something I love to do. I try to stick what I do best and that’s playing football.”

Notes: DT Richard Seymour(notes) was working on his own at practice as he recovers from a reported hamstring injury. … Schilens was in uniform doing some individual workouts and drills as he tries to come back from a knee injury. … OL Stefen Wisniewski(notes) returned to practice after sitting out Tuesday with a minor injury.

Murphy is banged up right now, so he's kinda falling behind. Did they already rule him out for week 1?

Yes, Murphy already officialy ruled out for week #1, and probably week #2 as well. After that, who knows?

Raiders waived WR Derek Hagan.

Hagan was playing productively on special teams and on offense whenever he got a chance, but he drew the short end of the stick when T.J. Houshmandzadeh signed. Hagan will likely get plenty of looks before the season is over.
