Derrick Brooks (1 Viewer)

Is his time to retire upon us in 2009? With the hiring of a new head coach, he might feel that he has his ring already and doesn't want any part of rebuilding with a new regime. Any homers have any insight?

I'm not sure they are a true "rebuilding" project. They only missed the playoffs due to a late season collapse.

Bucs Release Five Including Dunn & Galloway

The Tampa Tribune reports the Buccaneers today released LB Derrick Brooks, LB Cato June, RB Warrick Dunn, WR Joey Galloway and WR Ike Hilliard.

Who do you think will fill Brooks spot - Geno Hayes, Quincy Black - both been sitting around ready to make a mark with the TB Defense?

Inquiring minds want to know - who best fits the whole?

Could be a different style of defense - I'd keep an eye out for further developments.

I think the collapse is the excuse to rebuild - and that the Bucs are in full rebuild mode. The owners need to save money, and they have benn cutting guys who aren't highly paid, and have been productive for them, and are tied to the area, like Dunn.

It's definitely going to be a different style of defense. Bates will clog the middle and widen the ends, funneling plays inside. The Tampa-2 had smaller, penetrating tackles and a drop and spill concept.

Ruud is the defender to target here, as well as whomever ends up playing SS. There have been a few every-down WLB with value in the scheme Jim Bates likes to run, but a solid tackling MLB is going to get the bulk of the box score bump. It's hard to know yet whether it'll be Quincy Black or someone else who earns that outside spot, but it'll take a very good effort and some serious tackle opportunity to approach 85 solos or better. I don't see much upside here after the scheme change.

Jene, do you think Sabby is likely to remain as SS, will Jermaine Philips take the role back or will they bring in someone new?

Last season the Bucs were using some 3 safety looks. They've got 3 good ones and I would expect that to continue. Phillips imo is too good not to play a lot at SS.

It depends on what happens with Phillips. If Phillips is re-signed, I think he fits the in-the-box safety role that Bates is likely to use better than Piscitelli. It's possible that the two guys play some run-pass platoon or continue in big nickel formations. If Phillips goes, Sabby is probably talented enough to handle the role and more likely than anyone else currently on the roster.
