Desert Island "Discs" Draft (2010-2019) - We Did It (1 Viewer)

Last edited by a moderator:
Small correction for the spreadsheet - I drafted Run the Jewels 2.

To go along with the existing rap on the island I will take:  (I feel like I am just tagging along with rockaction and 80s' picks, but the 2 albums I have I like ever so slightly more)

8.08:  KENDRICK LAMAR - TO PIMP A BUTTERFLY (2015)

King ####a

These Walls

Rd 9 pick

One of my Favorite bands of the decade, Taylor Goldsmith is a fine songwriter and the songs on this record do a nice job showing off his style.  Side tidbit he is also Mr Mandy Moore link

Dawes – Stories Don't End - 2013

Most People -   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zUWu8Ny36dc

Just Beneath The Surface - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hWmD8CuipMg

From A Window Seat - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O1HzHh8uOJI
These guys were on my radar as well.

Shocked that this was still on the board. Seems like a round 1-2 pick.

Round 10

Album: Monolith of Phobos

Artist: The Claypool Lennon Delirium

Release Year: 2016

Cricket and The Genie (Movement 1, The Delirium)

Captain Lariat

Oxycontin Girl

I first hear about this band (which features former Primus bassist Les Claypool and son of John, Sean Lennon) while listening to Sean being interviewed by Marc Maron on his WTF Podcast. I was instantly enamored on the first listen. I texted a group of friends with some links to bring the band to their attention describing them as "sounding like the Beatles on acid." After a few seconds when it dawned on me I followed up with "Well...you know".

This record (and the newer one) is a tour deforce of bass riffs and bizarre lyrics - with Sean sounding a lot like his dear old dad. Luckily for him he got those genes and not Yoko's. Its a whole lot of fun.

New one for me this morning on the train:  Janelle Monae - Mushrooms and Roses.  Wow, I'm not sure what sorts of narcotics she's on, but I want some!  I'll be doing a deeper dive on her.

Oh, I'm going to like this.

Round 10 is ripe for the picking

These guys are incredible live, I was later to the party on them than some people here I think, so this was actually the album that hooked me, then I worked backwards. Probably as a result this is easily my favourite album of theirs. I've been dead centre front of stage to see them twice, they've played my local city at a folk festival and at the free concert series in the summer, both laid back events... I was the guy who just went and started the standing section, both times lots of other people followed, so no harm, no foul IMO.

Round 10 - The Rural Alberta Advantage - Mended With Gold (2014)

Our Love

Terrified

45/33

Vulcan, AB

10.ee - Robert Plant - lullaby and...The Ceaseless Roar (2014)

Plant has had a exemplary post-Zeppelin career putting out music that's connected to his band's past masterpieces without coming off sounding like Greta Van Fleet.  On this album, he's working with his touring band The Sensational Shape Shifters.  They look to the past at some of music that influenced Led Zeppelin:  English folk songs, North African music, country Blues while updating them with synths and loops.  Plant's voice has mellowed in his 60s; he doesn't do much screaming anymore but it's still one of the greatest instruments in rock 'n roll.

Embrace Another Fall

Pocketful of Golden

Up on the Hollow Hill (Understanding Arthur)

Round 10 - Neon Piss - Golden State Advantage - 2013

Generic sounding name, unyielding results. Short-time would-have-been Gilman stalwarts release instant legendary punk classic, only to be igonored by everybody but a few. Broken by little know punk blog Terminal Asylum and MRR short lists or this never makes my radar even for punk days. Have taken in almost every new music draft possible.

Golden State Advantage

Siege Mentality

Look Homeward Angel

Rd 10 Ilana (The Creator) by Mdou Moctar (2019)

genre: psych rock, world music

perhaps the most fiery psych-rock of the 21st century - NPR

The Tuareg musician’s first full-band studio album is an incandescent set of guitar music with a spontaneous, celebratory air—and a latent urgency reflecting the region’s very real difficulties.

10.xx - Live From the Artists Den by Amos Lee (2011)

Eephus said we could take a live album, but not a hits type of live album. Amos doesn't really have any hits. He has put out 5 singles so far in his career, and two of them are on this album.  I love him live, and this album really captures how good he is.

Another one that I am sure that people will say their best was in the 00s, but I had forgotten this one was at the start of the decade.  Easily one of the most played albums in the car with the fam, and a couple of the most played songs for the decade for us.

9.08:  THE SHINS - PORT OF MORROW (2012)

Simple Song

No Way Down

The Rifle's Spiral

Time for more metal.  Despite my avatar/name, I think this band has overtaken Radiohead as my most listened to band of the last 10 years or so.  I am sure some of it has to do with the amount music they have put out vs. RH, but a week probably doesn't go by without me listening to something of theirs.  I usually hesitate taking any metal in these, but this band has definitely softened in their old age - no more growling vocals, and a much more proggy sound, so I though there might be some in here that would be up for giving it a listen.

10.08:  OPETH - PALE COMMUNION (2014)

Eternal Rains Will Come    <--- love the drumming on here

Cusp of Eternity

Remember saying things like, "We'll sleep when we're dead"
And thinking this feeling was never gonna end
Remember that night you were already in bed
Said, "#### it" got up to drink with me instead

That last line resonates with me so much for own younger years. I had those nights, I wanted to just stay I. An I'd get the message from a friend and suddenly I was good to go.

Such a great band. Such a great song.

Have a busy Saturday but a lazy Sunday so will catch up with song picks and write ups for my rounds 8-10 tomorrow. Here are my make ups:

Rd 9 - Chance the Rapper - Coloring Book

Rd 10 - Jamila Woods - LEGACY! LEGACY!

11.05 - Marked Men - Ghosts - 2011

Sometimes hand meets meets pick, pick meets guitar, vox start, and there is an instant welling of joy in the listener. Such is the Marked Men and myself at times. SIgned largely to Dirtnap Records, this Denton, TX, band takes breakneck guitars, tweaked out vocals, both foreground and beautifully synced up backing, and is just killing it here. Serious Connecticut influence as both vox and bass player were raised in CT and seriously dissent from the NYHC and CTHC scene to play garage rock. Credit their move to Denton as being the impetus for being the most sought after punk band of the aughts and early teens, IIRC...

Hey, thanks to all running the spreadsheet and the draft sheet. (I'm looking at you @mphtrilogy.) Really, it can be very diffiuclt to sort through all these comments to find the actual picks and then search Spotify, watch the list, etc.

I'm not sure who's updating the spreadsheet, but thanks also.

Spotify list is all updated, I can update through the end of the draft no prob... to be honest I have to check out about 65% of these bands, looking forward to the exploration over the next year....
