Desert Island "Discs" Draft (2010-2019) - We Did It (1 Viewer)

11.ii  Purple Mountains - Purple Mountains (2019)

My #1 from last year and definitely top 20 of the decade for me.  This is as good as any Silver Jews album.

Another of my favorite artist's killing himself has really gotten me down.  And, like Scott Hutchison, he basically wrote a song (or, in this case, almost an entire album) that outlined his plan. 😢

Anyway, this album is another testament to David Berman's greatness as a songwriter.

That's Just The Way That I Feel

All My Happiness Is Gone

Margaritas At The Mall

Snow Is Falling In Manhattan

Any other current favorites that I should see live before they're no longer

11.xx - Django Django - Django Django (2012)

Music this decade was ruled by RIYLs and algorithms.  Artists that don't sound like anyone else are on their own to find an audience.  Wikipedia describes Django Django as "art rock" which isn't very useful.  They could be "synthpop" but they use guitar as much as keyboards, at least on this their debut.  I think their most distinctive feature is their close harmonies, if that helps at all.

Catch-up mode. Sorry 'bout the short write-ups, y'all. Round 11 picks today too? Lawd. Might wait to double up again tomorrow.

9.3 Jens Lekman, Life Will See You Now (2017)

Evening Prayer

What's That Perfume That You Wear

Postcard No. 17

Beautiful songwriting, beautiful tunes. Took one of these in the 2017 song draft, and might've taken some Jens stuff in a pre-2010s draft too. He's such a clever sonovagun. I love "Evening Prayer".

10.13 Real Estate, Atlas (2014)

Crime

Had to Hear

Late to this, 'cause I only delved back into Real Estate's catalogue after a couple songs from In Mind struck my fancy. Matt Mondanile's another reportedly-a-#####, but this is a damn good album.

Excellent 2 albums.  I almost went with Atlas tonight...

No Age- everything in between (2010)

When I first heard these guys I thought...yeah. I think it was piratemike who was really into them, so without any prodding I listened more, right around when nouns came out. When this one dropped, I was all in, especially on the back of fever dreaming (another top tune of the decade for me). Took me until the last couple years to find out theyre only a duo. Lots of noise for only two guys.
Another band people love and I've never gotten to sit down with them proper. Soon?

11.xx - Purgatory by Tyler Childers (2017)

He is my third Kentucky guy I've drafted. Ian Noe and Sturgill Simpson are my other two. Sturgill co-produced this album. I saw this ginger boy last spring, and he was really good. I guess this album is a blend of country, americana, and bluegrass.

Was having limoncello spritzes :lmao: with my better half while catching up on The Crown here. #TeamWashed

I do mean to watch Parasite ASAP.
It's well worth it. It's funny and crazy and really can't be described.
I dunno.

I agree that Limoncello spritzers are funny and crazy, but I bet we could all work together and describe them:

1) Sweet

2) Summery

3) Bubbly

:lmao: I, too, have missed out on the limoncello thing. Is that a drink I somehow missed?
:lmao:  Limoncello is a veritable institution in Italy. I add a measure of gin to MoCS's prosecco + limoncello recipe, trying to copy a tasty one we had at a restaurant. My cocktail of choice these days is usually a Negroni, though.

"The Host" was the one movie of his I watched, and I remember thinking it was awesome.

The other one I heard is fantastic is Memories of Murder. It's going to be tough to track down though.
I think I have Memories of Murder around here on DVD - it was good.   The one of his I have liked the best so far is Mother with The Host a close 2nd.    Really want to see Okja though.

:banned:, and jealous about the bolded.  Nowhere around here playing it.  :(    Wanted to track it down for my Tuesday day off, but will probably try to see 1917 instead.
The AMC chain brought back all the best picture winners this weekend hence me being able to see Parasite and Jojo Rabbit.

We just have Marcus around here - so mostly Bad Boys for Life and Doolittle showings on Tuesday.

Also, whoever thought of the "bistro" theaters with the minimum 1 item purchase for movies idea needs a throat punch or a kick to the ####.

I won't be around much until Tuesday so if I'm owed here's my two ideas for now:

St. Paul and the Broken Bones - Half the City

And

Black Books - Black Books.

Can detail it up later.

Yeah, I thought so. Just never ingested one or really seen one drank. The closest I've ever come is limoncello desserts, which might be my confusion.

But anything with lemon and the word ending -cello sounds delightful in my book.

Oh ####, come to think of it, in Florence, we were offered a ton of it. I was high and dry and missed out.

I really like Real Estate.  Great choice.

Ok, before I get too many gins in me and go the teen pop route, I will go the "obvious" way for me, and get the other album by these guys.   Despite what I mentioned above about not listening to them quite as much this last decade, it's still my favorite band, so I will require something from them on the island (hint, it might not be the last album I take from this group of guys though...).    Not my favorite album from them, but I do think Codex is a masterpiece that always puts me on the brink of tears.

11.08:  RADIOHEAD - KING OF LIMBS (2011)

Sleight of hand
Jump off the end
Into a clear lake
No one around

Just dragonflies
Fantasize
No one gets hurt
You’ve done nothing wrong

Slide your hand
Jump off the end
The water's clear and innocent
The water's clear and innocent

Codex

Yep, just cried watching that again.   Anyway - I really came around on this album after watching the Basement Tapes video of the album.    IMO live Radiohead >>>>> album Radiohead, so I always suggest people watch those (just one for KoL and In Rainbows) or see them live.

HERE is the link for the KoL in the basement recording.

To post something on topic...

I've gone over the draft list and liked some of my favs, but my top album of the decade is still undrafted.

This worries me.

Perhaps I suck.
No clue what your top album would be but I wouldn't sweat it not being drafted. There are still several albums available that many of the main music critics have almost universally included in their top 10.

For sure - different strokes and all, and that is what we love about the music drafts and lists.  My faves are usually on the metal side, and those don't get drafted or appear on lists.

Got ya.

I doubt that many here would guess it is my style...

However, @rockaction knows that I like this artist/group/etc.

Other's prolly saw me post a song or two b4 in other threads too, perhaps.

I'll note it if/when it's selected.

I think maybe I've seen it, but can't remember. It's on the tip of my tongue, though.

I think the draft works best when expanding horizons, and I don't say that to harangue anyone at all or anything, I'm just listening to Foxygen right now and being blown away by their early/late Kinks sound, which never would have happened had I not drafted around landrys hat.

Tool's drummer is the best living drummer with Peart gone.  Who else is in the running?

Loving their new album. Forgot how much I lived this band in my 20s.
