***Detroit Tigers thread: 1st pick yet again, this is not fun*** (1 Viewer)

3 out with 42 games to play? Nobody is talking playoffs....playoffs??
Its good to see they havent rolled over and quit but there are still 5 teams ahead of them for the final WC spot, Add in that the injuries to Sanchez and Norris and Brad still the manager of this team. They have little or no shot and if they somehow pull it off.. they wont get far.

TB and Minny are just ahead of us, so if we win enough to have a shot, those two won't be an issue. If NY and Toronto stay strong, they could knock down Baltimore (13 more games against those two ..as well as 7 against KC) . The challenge will be for both LAA and Texas to fall enough for us to pass them. It comes down to the coming week. We have 3 more against Texas and then 3 games next week against LAA (3 more in late Sept against Texas, too). If Detroit can get a run right now, we could even the slate with these two. Win 2 of 3 with Texas (and 2 of 3 in Sept), and sweep LAA, and we pull even with them both. Then it's anyone's game.

We don't have the staring pitching to compete. The lineup is top notch, but no way does this pitching staff get us to the playoff.

1 ER vs a good lineup for JV tonight.

Seems the :hophead: about his demise was grossly overstated. Drew Sharp> :hey:

Ausmus got thrown out tonight, should have just walked to the unemployment line

As much as I dislike Drew Sharpe he is not the only one saying that. Many people who cover baseball believe Verlander's best days are behind him.

Problem with Verlander is everytime he has a bad stretch or a few bad games he has some kind of excuse. It's getting to a point where it's getting old. How many times last year did he say he found a flaw in his delivery??? At least 3 times I recall.

Earlier this year I saw someone on tv talking about a preseason interview they did with Verlander. The person said Verlander still believes he can blow everyone away. The interviewer brought up how pitchers over time (with the exception of Nolan Ryan) have had to make adjustments as they progress in their careers cause they cant throw as hard as they used to and have to rely more on pitching. Interview asked Verlander if that was something he think he might have to do. The interviewer said his response was maybe in 3-4 years.

So Verlander's problem(s) might not just be physical. When you try to do more beyond your ability you usually fail. It's playing within your abilities is where one will excel.

He is human.. I understand he a competitive guy but is he a realistic one?

It's not last year and of course his best years are behind him, almost every 32-year-old baseball player can say that. It doesn't take "baseball people" to understand that.

He's given up one earned run in his last three outings combined, and has been great in five of his last six starts. Give him a break because the franchise has a lot sunk into him. We need him to be good, and he has been. It's one of the very few positives of this season.

ETA: I wouldn't agree with Drew Sharp even if I agreed with him. Valenti's dumb ### is just as bad or worse, Detroit media is the absolute pits. My old neighborhood has more upside than those two clowns.

Detroit gets a good pitching performance and loses. Those are must win games when you have a skeleton starting rotation

Sad they couldn't even advance Miggy in the 9th after his lead-off double (third double of the game). You're right - they need to pull out wins in a game like this. Gotta win these next two with Texas somehow.

I agree about the JV talk, pretty pointless at this point either way. He's here to stay and if you have a problem with that go talk to Dave Dombrowski.

I would like nothing more then to see Verlander do well. Just tired of the excuses. Last year Cabera was sorta slumping to start the year you didnt hear him say. I was dropping my hands too much or I found a flaw in my swing.

Everyone struggles from time to time. Its a long season. I hope he can keep it up otherwise that contract is a albatross.

I thought it was Gardenhire, but upon further review it was actually Tom Kelly, who got mad at David Ortiz because he swung too hard. I'd rather let a jellyfish sting me in the face three times a day for the next year than be a Twins fan.

Seeing that Buxton has finally made the jump to the majors. Sano looks like a nice corner piece and Jose Berrios in on the verge of joining them. Being a Twins fan next year cant all be that bad. No, they wont every spend a bunch of money but should be fun watching these guys continue to get better

Yeah, they needed to win a couple, not drop three in a row. They needed to be jarred awake ...shoulda dumped Brad and see what effect that would have had. :wishful thinking:

XXX

They had to start winning every series. Getting swept at home, it ain't happening.
Well they didn't get swept, but your point is still valid.

Comerica isn't a home field advantage this year, you can't keep losing series to average teams at home and have a shot. They left all their runs in Chicago.

Yeah, i guess it was a four games series. This team is too painful to keep up with daily anymore. So disappointing in so many ways especially since several players are having very good years.

Nope...looking at the lineup it is hard to believe nothing is happening as far as any kind of big innings.

Price, Nathan, Cespedes, Soria and probably Davis will be off the books. That is almost 50 million. What are we looking at in terms of a mid range starter, an outfielder?? Bullpen arms?

Whoever the players are, quantity over quality. This team is not winning because they don't have enough good players. There are some good pieces, but not enough in the pipeline behind them. Whatever the answer, as much a s Mr I will not be happy about it, this is probably a multi year project; not a quick fix. It may only be a two year, but if this team makes a run at it in 2016 then we will probably be at the same place after that season as right now.

As frustrating as this offense can be at times I think almost all the money needs to go toward solid pitching wherever that will come from.

There are teams who win with offenses like ours but not pitching like ours.

This is the worst game yet. How do you bring Gorzesucklany into a 5-4 game? Just leave Al Al in there, he's been the most consistent guy all year. If he blows, he blows it.

Although I will say that the more games they lose the better. If they get a top ten pick it's protected, meaning they can sign a guy like Grienke without giving up the pick. I figure 74 wins should be good enough for a top 10.

Plus I'd have to say that it would also help get rid of BA, none of this crap of "oh we finished well give him another year" crap.

Amen to that.

------

Looking at some stats over the last 16 years (2000-2015):

Team ERA of 4.85 is only the 8th worst of those years. It is the worst since 2008, though.

The hitting is the surprise: The team BA of .275 is tied for 5th for those years. However, OBP of .331 is only 10th, and Runs/Game are 14th of 16. A primary culprit for the lack of scoring is the number of Ks, which will likely top 1,200 for only the second time and could rival the team-worst 1,268 from 1996. they

The only thing wrong with JV was his health and some mechanical issues, possibly related to those health issues.

This is what we were all hoping for, he looks ####### terrific.

And by the way, Miggy is batting .500 since his return (well, just below now that he is 1 for 3 tonight). By the weekend, he'll be eligible again for the league batting title ...could be/should be his 4th title in 5 years.

Great to see JV back the last few weeks. Looking almost like his old self. He has to be our ace the next couple years, then we need to fill a #2 and #3 guy in behind him. That is our highest priority. That and for heavens sake get rid of Brad.

Awesome effort, ####ty Ianetta of all guys breaks it up. Agree with MLB guys saying he should have gone to the slider again, Ianetta is not a good hitter.

Also agreed they should have just let let the Rajai Davis play go, why even consider reviewing it? You're not making the playoffs, let JV keep his rhythm.

Having good JV back is something to root for the rest of the year. The pitching staff is just so bad right now but at least we know the team has a great shot when JV out there, just like it should be.

There is just no way they bring Ausmus back, even with the bad pitching they are still basically mailing it in every night.

If Ausmus is back for you guys next year, I promise to ship you a bottle of your favorite spirit (under $100 please), to help ease the 2016 season.

Ausmus can't be blamed for this:

Tigers pitching on road trip had a 11.44 ERA and a 2.53 WHIP

:lmao:

I'll be at Comerica tomorrow, last time I was there was the 2013 playoffs. It's the return of Lobstein too!!!!!!
