It would still surprise me. Not sure why the market is so soft. But for a decent price the Tigers may luck into it.

Well right now the rumors have the White Sox and Orioles as the two most likely landing spots. To me that says the market for him is somewhat soft. The Orioles are sooooooooooo cheap.jon_mx said:

Why am I not that excited about this one? I had Upton on some of my FBB teams so I followed him every game. Never thought of him as an upper level type of player. I know that he is an upgrade over Tyler Collins.
With an opt out after 2 years this could be a 2 year deal.

He's a power bat, in his prime, that has played at least 149 games each of the last 5 years and most importantly (unlike Cespedes) buys walks. Curious how the lineup will be assembled, but regardless he should see more fastballs, which he historically hits very well.

I actually think there's a pretty solid chance he opts out. He'll only be entering his age 30 season. Assuming he has two good years, with the way salaries are rising, I don't think its unreasonable at all to think he could get a contract better than 4/$88 mm.
Overall, this is a good deal. He's a 3.5-4 WAR player (I think). $22MM per is about right for that player.

Bat him 2nd in front of Miggy & the two Martinezs, that could help with the fastballs.

No matter what's done this really fixes the problem at the top of the order. Slide Kinsler up to lead off, stack spots 2-5, and put the 3rd OF (whoever it is that day) in the bottom third of the order. I think batting Upton 2nd makes the most sense too though. He may stop running so much, but even if he does he won't clog up the bases like Victor would. He could easily score from 1st on a Miggy/JD double or from 2nd on a basehit.

He's been a mild disappointment in fantasy over the years because the hype was so huge, and because he doesn't steal as many bases as he could. He usually underperforms his draft position slightly.
From a real-life perspective he's been pretty consistently productive.

It's a pretty formidable lineup if everybody is healthy. A mini-breakout by Castellanos would help out an anemic looking bottom of the order. The pitching staff has some question marks but they were able to add some potential minor league help in the Price and Cespedes dumps.

Oh, absolutely. It seems fairly clear that Upton wouldn't have signed otherwise though. If he shows he really is a superstar the next 2 years then he can get the payday he thinks he should get now then. Win-win for both sides.

McCann has potential to be one of the better hitting catchers. Iggy will not hit for power but not bad for a #9 hitter that adds speed. Maybin and Gose will be a nice platoon with both having good speed.

Read a lot from the pundits about a probable line-up that has Upton hitting 5th.
Why would you trap him on the base path behind Miggy and VMART? He doesn't have to be the masher or the main offensive component here. He's a #3 hitter big picture, but that spot is taken on this team by the best hitter in baseball. So he's going to have to do a better job of getting on base and setting the table for the big guys, while showing more speed than he has so far. To me Upton hitting 2nd is optimal, and he can hit 3rd or 4th in NL parks.

Injuries are always the wildcard. Hopefully there is a little more depth than in past years when those do occur.

Much better speed than in the past. Kinsler, Upton, Maybin, Gose, Iggy, all have good speed. Unless Salty way under performs in spring training, Holiday is gone. The article doesn't paint a very rosy picture of what we have in the minors that could be called up should either catcher get dinged up. It would seem to make sense that the Tigers try and get a prospect at catcher in trade for Holiday.

Who has excess catchers? what in the farm system could be used to buy one? I can't imagine Holaday alone is going to get one with options.

The article mentioned Houston. It would seem Holaday would be a viable back up there, if not platoon and looking at their depth chart, Stassi ( http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/s/stassma01.shtml). seems to have some upside, would be better than anything we would have in Toledo and could be an option for a call up due to an injury.

It's just eating the arbitration years.
I am fine with it but I think they probably should have signed JD first, then invested in Upton. I said the same thing about Scherzer v Verlander, and we see how that worked out. Time to sign JD long-term is now, if he has another season like 2015 he's going to market. Wish they would have given him a 5/75 deal, something I think he would have accepted. Eat the final two arbitration years, guarantee another three years without committing to something ridiculous.

I was in that area for work last May. Not a lot to do, but I did discover the Circle Bar B Preserve: https://www.swfwmd.state.fl.us/recreation/areas/circlebbarreserve.html It was insane the numbers of alligators I saw. As I recall, I was able to walk about 6 miles without retracing most of my steps.
