***Detroit Tigers thread: 1st pick yet again, this is not fun*** (2 Viewers)

Hi little Peyton!

And yes a 3.66/1.20 in the NL east sucks. That's likely a 4+ ERA in any other division

His K rate has always been mediocre.  But he gives you innings!

Yay.

Just another bloaded Detroit contract for a guy who's likely on the downside of his career.   Shocker.
Zimmermann and his bloaded contract gives up his first ER of the season last night.  if there's one thing das gildo knows, it's pitching

Jesus please stop marching Mike Pelfrey out there. I've never seen a team so desperate to replace Alfredo Simon's production. This guy should have been on a minor league contract and MAYBE broke camp. I understand the offense was crap again but he gave up 9 HITS! This is going to be a long, long season if Anibal can't get it going.

To date, he's the 2nd best arm in the rotation.  Won't maintain, hope not anyway, but it's not like he's doing anything unexpected.  He lets a lot of guys on base, eats some innings, and is reliant on the offense putting up 5-6 runs and the bullpen to produce to win most of his games.  Norris is going to replace Greene, but who would replace Pelfrey? Matt Boyd? Thad Weber? Warwick Saupold? Buck Farmer? rush up Fulmer? keep Greene in the rotation?

He sucked when he was signed and he sucks now.  The other options suck too.

Pelfrey gave up 9 hits and 5 runs and his WHIP and ERA actually dropped a little.

The guy could give up a solo shot as his only hit and still not win since the Tigers have scored exactly zero runs, over his 4 starts, while he was the pitcher of record. The only run they've scored in any of his starts was in the 9th yesterday

This might be the dumbest thing I've ever read on these boards

This was more about whatever dumb metrics you're using to tell me Big Pelf has been the 2nd best arm in that rotation

he sucks.
He has the 2nd best ERA in the rotation.  It's week 4, so that's why I said 'won't maintain, hope not anyway.'

He has not been better then JV or Zimmerman and I believe Anibal and Greene at least have a quality start. I would take whatever options you mentioned, real or fake over Mike Pelfrey.

Upton dropped in the order... By Ausmus' own logic he's now a desperate man.

Oh, they're real.  But they're not spectacular.

pelfrey has a negative K-BB%.  he actually sustained a 12% K rate for 150 IP last year, which is pretty amazing in today's MLB.  I think I could K 12% of guys to be honest.

No reason to think Norris would replace Greene. If Greene is pitching well he's gonna stay, Norris could be used in any number of scenarios including giving Pelfrey or Anibal a break. But they are going to need contributions beyond the current staff to be successful.

Not sure what "rushing" Fulmer means either. He has 400 minor league innings (many major league pitchers have a lot less) and is pitching in AAA, he's physically ready to pitch in the majors now. No one knows what the results may be but he's at least worth a look when the opportunity arises.

“He’s got a pretty good track record over the course of 500 plate appearances of putting up pretty consistent numbers,” Ausmus said of Upton. “I’m not going to, after two weeks of games, change the game plan. Two weeks of games where he hasn’t hit like he normally hits. That’s what in this game they call panicking.”

He put him at a more critical place in the lineup.

No way.  They are professional hitters and would hit the crap out of you.  Maybe if you faced a lineup of pitchers you might strikeout a few.
12% is only one out of every 8.2 batters, people forget that.  that's not that many, i think I could hit that rate.  the tigers should give me a look.

admittedly, the walks would be a concern.  but I pitched during little league and had decent stuff.  i wonder if they would open up a roster spot for the guy who used to catch me.

JD k's too much to hit second.  Upton has had years in the 120s but he's not a #2 hitter either, VMART is probably the guy you want there with JD 4th and Upton 5th IMO.

Kinsler is really the guy, but we don't have a true leadoff.
Well yeah, I was just going off the current lineup.  Maybin might be ok at 2 when they face lefties, but it makes sense to move Upton down for now.  The lack of lefties and a leadoff guy aren't helping this conundrum.

No real reason to let Justin go over 100 pitches.  Cost him a couple earned runs.  He is not a guy who can effectively throw 120 pitches anymore.

Yeah should have gone with VerHagen in the 7th.  Day game tomorrow and Bad Brad is going through pitchers like Prince went through attractive teenage singers.

I still don't know what to make of this team long term. Upton isn't going to hit like Brandon Inge all year... I hope. Maybin needs to get in the lineup too. Hopefully the youngster pitchers get their chance and one of them takes hold.

LOts of worries with this team but I think Upton will be just fine.  Having owned him in fantasy leagues for many years, sometimes he looks like the best hitter in the game and then he looks like his brother.

As I've said since February, Norris and/or Fulmer is going to have to deliver for this team to go to the playoffs.  I think both are going to be above average MLB pitchers, but it's hard to tell what they'll do this year.  Really excited for Friday.

That's the point. Your comment made zero sense, as did Ausmus' the ship will right itself BS. They looked real panicked scoring 8 runs tonight.
I never said anything about the ship righting itself.  You did as you seemed to completely misunderstand my comment.   I would have fired Ausmus at the end of last year's train wreck.

Yes, they need at least a #3 to go with JZ/JV. Daniel Norris could be the guy when he gets back but Fulmer is needed to pitch well right now.

Just a hunch, but getting back James McCann eventually might have a positive effect on the staff.

And clog the bases?

#dustybaker
V-Mart would be the perfect #2 hitter if he could run at all,  Takes pitches, does not strike out much.  But you know there are leg problems when V-Mart pulls into Comerica and has a Handicapped Parking tag hanging from his mirror.

wait, the 5 hole is more critical than 2?
If you consider driving in runs as more critical, then yes.  Hitters batting 5th have fewer plate appearances but drive in significantly more runs.  Batting second requires a bit different approach, often wanting to move the runner and definitely staying out of dp's.  I would bat Iggy and Kinsler one and two.  The way Nick is hitting, he should bat 5 and Upton 6th until he breaks out.

Pretty much along what I was thinking, but it will take another team hitting slump before the skipper makes another change.

my temp order:

Iggy

Kinsler

Miggy

VMart (S)

JD

Nick

Upton

Catcher

CF

Fulmer just threw a 94 mph sinker that just dove at the plate and completely fooled Arcia for teh K.  His four seam is 96 and straight but still 96, but this sinking fastball he has looks terrific.

Two innings, so far so good.
