***Detroit Tigers thread: 1st pick yet again, this is not fun*** (2 Viewers)

Heard some rumor fly about giving up Jimenez, McCann, Hill and Moya for Lucroy. I'd be furious personally.
That's an awful lot to upgrade one offensive position, I would be very surprised if they actually did it.

Lucroy is still cheap this and next year though (5 mill a year) and could fit within the expected lowing of payroll the next few years.

Too much for a season and a half rental player. If Lucroy was under control for 3-4 season maybe..but then the Brewers would not be trading him.

Like I said, I'd be furious if they traded Jiminez. I know it didn't work out with Zumaya or Matt Anderson but it's worth it for a dominant closer to finally be on this team. Especially with the potential of the starting rotation over the next 4-5 years.

Every time this team gets hot I have to remind myself at some point Anibal Sanchez will pitch. Also how is Lowe still on this team... Maybe he'll turn it around by 2020

Joe Jiminez struck out Omar Infante on 5 pitches in his first game in Toledo.

The Tigers can deny it all they want but I fully expect to see Jiminez this year and before September.

I might be wrong but I can dream.

How is Lowe still on this team? A 4-month sample size should be enough to see. He is terrible.
Lowe's numbers in Toronto after they acquired him look fine on the surface but I never trusted him. It's amazing he was able to make so much out of 4 good months in Seattle (not trashing Detroit, Jays also traded 3 prospects to get him for 2.5 months).

Remember when people said JV was overpaid and done?

Well he's neither.  96 mph in the 9th, all his pitches were razor-sharp.  Tough break with all that dink and dunk in the 9th, too bad.

I know they have been mentioned in starting pitching talks, but they really need some sort of short reliever to go with the JWil, Greene and K-Rod.  Rondon can't be trusted, Lowe should be DFA'd, and Alex Wilson/Kyle Ryan are decent but also hard to trust in high-leverage spots.

There are plenty of guys out there that will only cost a low level prospect, so I would like to see that get done.  With JZimm coming back that's like making a trade, that at least gets us out from under Anibal starting.  Then just go with Boyd or Norris depending on who is looking better, and use the other as a long reliever.  Norris might be more effective in that role with his stuff, although the walks and homers are troublesome in those spots.

:lmao: at Maybin

He gets hit as a payback for Rondon hitting an Astros batter, then steals 2B in an 8-0 game.  Then Miggy hits a two run shot on the next pitch and looks into the Astros dugout.

AB>it's safe for Lowe now!

I'm fine with Norris as a #4 starter and Pelfrey at 5. My main concern with Norris is he always seems to be hurt. His stuff is definitely good enough. Pitch count is a concern. I'm not as comfortable with Boyd but his last 3 starts have been good. I would be fine with trading for a 4th starter if that's the route they choose.

I agree that we need another late inning bullpem arm but only if the cost is reasonable. Of course, I would prefer to see that spot filled by Jiminez.

I was worried about a 1-5 week this week vs the hottest team over the last two months, and a road series in Fenway where they haven't played well since the 1940s.

6-0 week.  They need to follow it up with a strong week, and especially getting those Whote Sox games.  Anibal on Tuesday isn't the best way to begin a series though, wish they had really anyone else pitching that day.  Fulmer on Wednesday and I would guess Verlander will pitch on Thursday.

Trade value dropping on Hellickson,Santigo, and yes Santana from the Twins.  Maybe the Tigers get one of these guys on the bargain side.

Pelfrey threw 6 shutout innings..the odds of that were higher than winning the lottery so anything is possible.
That good outing by Pelfrey might have management feeling their ok with what they got, and no deals.

I'm fine with standing pat. They will most likely be able to add a reliever it even a crappy starter during the waiver period.

Per The News, teams were asking too much:

The Tigers were in on three starting pitchers – Oakland’s Rich Hill, Philadelphia’s Jeremy Hellickson and Los Angeles Angels’ Hector Santiago.

But in the end, as Avila predicted, to acquire those players would have meant trading one or more of the club’s four top prospects – three of whom are working presently at the Major League level (pitchers Michael Fulmer, Daniel Norris and Matt Boyd).

And Avila has been resolutely opposed to trading any of those players – whom the club got in deadline deals last season for Yoenis Cespedes and David Price – or right-handed power pitcher Joe Jimenez, who is pitching at Triple-A Toledo and is in position to be called up to Detroit in September.

“We don't want to trade away our good young prospects for a two-month rental,” Avila said during a press conference in Chicago July 23. “We think right now we have the team that can take us into the playoffs barring any other injuries. We are looking at winning right now, but we are also looking toward the future. We have to make both work.”

Angels started with a high price for Santigo, and then sold cheap getting Nolasco, 4-8, 5.13ERA, and Meyer, 0-1, 12.37ERA.  Santigo is signed through 2017.  Seems like the Tigers could of beat this offer with pizza and beer, and some unknown player

Love McCann coming through with a clutch single.

Was not in a big hurry.  Been busy.  Was it the misspelling which gave it away??
McCann has been coming through with a lot of clutch hits the past few days.

Again, this guy is so good behind the plate that he doesn't need to have a .800 OPS to be a valuable player.  He and Iglesias just need to hit enough to sustain the bottom of the order, and doing that in the clutch is an added bonus.  Both those guys have some clutch hits this year.

Stay out of the Hillary thread and you'll be ok.

Brad is showing some real confidence in using Lowe in such a critical position.  The next step may be brining him in with just a 5 run lead.

3 games out of first, if they were .500 vs Cleveland they'd have the best record in the AL.

:oldunsure:

ETA: JD back tomorrow

Ok you're working on Sanchez, you have a long history with him and he's got a big contract but why, WHY is Mark Lowe still on this team?
