***Detroit Tigers thread: 1st pick yet again, this is not fun*** (1 Viewer)

I see they're dusting off Zimmermann to start him in the Atlanta series.  No other options though.  Sanchez, Farmer and Pelfrey are all awful.
This is a scary one.  He was awful the last time.  But they need Zimmerman in the post season, so they need to know.

I would take Zimm over Pelfrey.    If either one starts they need Hardy up and warm in the first inning.
Agreed, if we make it to the playoffs then Zimm could be useful.  Pelfrey won't.  This is really the only way to find out.  Although since Boyd is the one losing the start I'd imagine it's him and not Hardy that's ready to come in if needed.  May need both though.

Should be Boyd with Zimmermann coming in if needed.  Granted Boyd had a bad start last time but Zimmermann has multiple bad starts.   He shouldn't be starting with the season on the line although I hope I'm wrong.

I'm going to Cooperstown when Miggy is enshrined, love that guy.
Miggy 38 taters. JUP 30

Sad if this team does not make it but the tale of the season is the Tigers are 13-32 vs Cleveland, KC and Baltimore this year.  72-41 the rest of the schedule.  Unreal...go 20-25 in those games and win the division.

Tough to understand...Shane Greene has been really bad for about two months now and they just keep trotting him out there late in games.

Jose Iglesias has a baseball IQ of 6, he needs to do some work on that.  He costs them runs in the field and his baserunning is just putrid.

Good job by JV again today, if you can't beat the Braves you don't deserve to be in the playoffs.  That K-Rod blown save last Saturday resonated and took all their momentum away, that was a tough loss.

Oh well, they won more games than Vegas thought they would.  Too many games where one part of the team just didn't show up, today it was the hitting.

Can't play the way they did against Cleveland and expect to play in the post season. A lot to be excited about next year, a lot to be disappointed about and left on the table this year.

When I look back three games stick in my mind.   The double header loss with the one inning makeup they pissed away in Chicago and the K-Rod blown save last Saturday. The great thing about baseball is those 2-3 games in April and May really count.

Yeah that one inning makeup game hurts too but I like to think that crazy comeback in Tampa more than makes up for that one.  They just simply weren't good enough, the starting pitching was either bad or stretched thin for almost the whole season.  I'd like to think a staff of JV, JZimm, Norris, Fulmer, and Boyd for most of the season produces different results but no one could have possibly thought all three of those rookies would play such a critical role.  Sanchez and Pelfrey are back next year in the last years of their contracts, hopefully at least one can be an effective solution for depth.

The bullpen was 13th in ERA, another terrible season.  For awhile there the back-end was locked down with Justin Wilson, Greene, and K-Rod but Greene lost his control and JWil starting giving up too many XTra base hits.  I think with Rondon and Alex Wilson that is a decent core, but they'll need to find a few more arms.

The hitting was fine, they finished 2nd in the AL in OPS and JD and Big Nick took the next step in their growth.  JUP went crazy down the stretch and actually put up pretty normal numbers for him, would be nice if he could spread that out more across the season but he's notoriously streaky.  Kinsler was the team MVP IMO, led them in WAR again and his contributions come from every aspect of the game.

I think Ausmus did about as well as he could have with what he had.  Someone really needs to kick Jose Iglesias' ### though, he should be a much better fielding shortstop and he's a terrible baserunner.  To me that goes to concentration and work ethic.  McCann probably will never be a great hitter but he can be a 15 HR guy who plays great D and that's enough.  CF is a big weakness defensively, Maybin has a $9 million team option and I would expect them to exercise that.  But he's not very good out there, and he also needs to do some work.  Hopefully they can keep JD, he's turning into a true star.

I'll take that season over last season every time, but the end was disappointing.

We all know the big dollar guys will be back but who is gone for sure and who is on the bubble?

Greene has to be in jeopardy.

The hitting was fine this season.  A lot of what ifs due to injuries.  If Maybin had played early in the season instead of Gose, if Zimmermann had stayed healthy, or if Nick didn't get injured.  Who knows.  On the other hand, the rookie pitchers exceeded expectations.  The future is bright there.  So glad Avila stood pat this past offseason and during the season.  Let them develop and supplement around them.  I also like how JV stayed healthy all year and this is the first time in like three years that Miggy actually finished the season instead of having an injury that shut him down.

The bullpen was ugly but Krod was able to be a reliable closer despite that late season blown save.  Just bad timing.  Rondon looked good but who knows if he carries that over to next season.  It was almost ironic that Ian Krol was warming up to come in the game late Sunday.

I am fine with Brad coming back.  I'm not his biggest fan but the team kept fighting down the stretch even though, at times, it looked like they were finally out of the race.  Doesn't the team have an option?  I would rather just pick that up than have to sign Brad to an extension.

The main key this offseason will be to find a way to extend JD.

They kept it interesting until the very end.  Even though they missed the playoffs, in essence, they had so many "must win" games down the stretch that the end of the season did have a playoff type vibe.  As they say, maybe next year...

Ausmus will be back..etch it in stone.  Just like Martha loves Caldwell Chris Illtich loves Ausmus.

Ausmus has grown on me though. 3 young guys in the rotation, key players missing action.  Having to use Pelfrey and or Sanchez every 5th game.

Another thing with Ausmus is that you have to give Avila another off-season to perfect this roster.  People last year were talking about a steep decline, that they should "blow it up."  Well that was unreasonable, and despite the high salary this team has, some of that money is locked into JV and Miggy who are franchise icons who actually produced great years.  Dombrowski went a long way in trying to get them the World Series and they had at least two teams with enough to win it in 2012 and 2013.  Still, I think he missed some of the smaller details and I hope Avila learned from that.

They were 11-26 against the Tribe and Royals, 75-49 against everyone else.  That's the season, that's why they aren't playing this week.

Did not realize that the Tribe did the same thing to the Royals this season.  14-4 vs Detroit, 14-5 vs the Royals. No wonder why they ran away with the division. Then it is hard to believe  they were only 10-9 vs the Twins.
