***Detroit Tigers thread: 1st pick yet again, this is not fun*** (1 Viewer)

The most impressive thing in the game was the 10 pitch at bat by Iglesias.
The most impressive thing is Detroit came back and won a game, something that is very rare this year. When Detroit has been down after 6, you might as well have gone home because they weren't winning.

Heard a stat that they were 0 - 30 when trailing after or in the 7th I forget which.
The "let's beat the traffic" guys must love that stat.

Bet they hated it yesterday.

It always bites them in the end.

The return of a healthy VMart and Rondon have been huge and looked to have filled the Tigers worst needs. If Verlander does not have a stellar performance tonight (and maybe even if he does), the Tigers may be forced to pick up a starter at the trade deadline. Detroit does not have much to offer, but need to look for a short term big contract rental option they can pick up on the cheap. Maybe someone like Cueto or Harang.

Another bullpen arm would be their secondary need.

Yes, hard to see them going after a hitter with VMart back & Avila coming back soon for platoon duty.

An iffy JV needs to be their #5 guy starting and it would not hurt to have someone other than Rondon & Soria in the bullpen.

On to the 12th ...a game of bullpen attrition, now. Would have liked to have seen Raj try to steal 2nd with 2 out and Miggy down in the count. Get to 2nd ..scoring position; get thrown out, Miggy gets a fresh start in the 12th. I love second guessing.

Yeah he couldn't read Bastardo at all. I think that was the idea but it never came to fruition.

JV was shaky in the first three tonight but pretty good after that. If nothing else, that was a positive tonight IMO.

I love this little blurb on him:

"Gorzelanny dropped to 1-2 with his first loss since April 23. He hadn't allowed multiple hits or a run since June 20."

Wow, he went an entire 10 days (and 3 whole appearances) on such a "hot streak"!!

This team is just so frustrating. Rarely is there a pleasant surprise. They are still a legitimate contender and definitely will not be sellers. But I feel like turning them off until September and checking back to see if they changed their way.

Yeah, it's crazy. Great bats, speed, defense, Price plus other decent-enough starters, some good stuff in the pen ...they're better than this. But then there's Brad ...

With the bit of bad blood brewing between Pittsburgh and Detroit, I'd like to see more of this and possibly even the benches clearing, etc to light a fire. I love Miggy being Miggy, but some attitude would sure be nice. I would think any pitch that even brushes back Vmart could be the spark tonight. Hell, order Gorzo to just start swinging punches so he can be suspended.

This blame Brad stuff strikes me as lazy. This team is flawed, when the horses don't produce they struggle because there is no organizational depth. Brad has some oaf tendencies, but in most cases not sure what else you can expect when the leaders are not productive.

Offensively the team is constructed just fine. If they made half the base running errors they'd have three or four more wins. Defensively it's the best team since the early 90s.

Starting pitching is probably above average, bullpen is awful and can't be trusted. Ask yourself this: do the Cardinals have more talent? I would say no. Plenty of assets to work with, but the on the field product is very average.

Still better than the white sox though....

No, I do blame Brad. Miggy's producing. VMart is now back healthy and contributing. Cespedes, JD ..both having solid seasons. Kinsler has been so-so, and that's a situation where Brad could try something different to get a spark ...move up Iglesius and his continuing strong bat and speed and see what happens. And Brad should be bold about addressing the pitching flaws. If you can't count on guys, try a stretch with Ryan or Lobstein ...can't be much worse than Simon lately. And put Jobo and Gorzelanny on the bench or out the door.

Wanna get a spark? Let Brad go as a message to the team.

The problem is the lack of alternatives. You made suggestions for Simon, although they haven't really proven they can do much better yet. But who will replace Joba and Gorz? Yeah, they've been awful, but will someone else in the system not be terrible? who?

I like the idea of Iggy getting some run at leadoff, but anything else strikes me as just rearranging the deck chairs. I think wait and see for 3 more weeks on the under performer's then see if you can flip some B or C level prospects for 2 month rental's with question marks is about all that can be done at this point.

Have to be concerned that Simon is going to have another bad 2nd half like last year. They hit everything hard yesterday.
Yeah, I suspected that was going to be the case. Simon was used as a workhorse the first couple of months, and he has never been a workhorse. The best thing for Simon would be to give him a couple of starts off. Maybe just a few relief appearances, then bring him back as a starter in August.

:censored: Way to crap away another clutch HR by JD. Hopefully Gorzo will plunk the first batter he faces to touch of the bench clearer I want so bad.

Just what they needed. Swept at home vs an NL team to send them to .500. Skies the limit now! Bullpen looked sharp again today.

"Hi there GM of a legit contender. I'm Dave Dombrowski. Can I interest you in a nice David Price or Yoenis Cespedes? How about a gently used Joaquim Soria?"

Pitchers Jeff Ferrell and Drew VerHagen called up. No corresponding moves announced. They need to make room on the 40 man roster (39 right now). Gorzellany is terrible and I think he has to go...but for some reason I bet him and Joba will both stay.

Edit to add that they dont need to make a move regarding 40 man roster.

Just heard on local radio that the Tigers DFA'd Joba Chamberlain.

Now we need to DFA Gorzellany.
