The Detroit Tigers have dominated the Kansas City Royals this season. But if they miss the playoffs, they will have a mediocre record against the three worst teams in their division to blame.
The Tigers are 11-5 in 16 games with the Royals, who hold a one-game lead over the Tigers in the Central. But the Tigers are .500 against every other team in the Central Division.
Here is the Tigers' record this season against each of their division foes:
Tigers vs. AL Central teams
vs. Royals: 11-5
vs. Indians: 8-8
vs. White Sox: 8-8
vs. Twins: 6-6
The Tigers have outscored the Royals by 27 runs in 16 meetings, but they have outscored the Indians, White Sox and Twins by just six runs in 44 games. Here is that breakdown:

That 0-3 record against the Red Sox is interesting based on where those teams stand today. The Red Sox completed a sweep of the Royals on July 20. A day later, the Royals suffered a 3-1 loss to the White Sox to fall to 48-50.
The Royals are 32-14 since.
What does all this mean? Not that much. The Central Division title will be decided on the field over the next two-plus weeks.
But these numbers do confirm two things. One, if the Tigers win the division, one of the main reasons will be because they beat up on the Royals. Two, if the Tigers don't win the division, their mediocre results against the three teams that trail them in the division will be to blame.

Beating the Tigers in their three-game series this weekend would be extremely helpful to their chances and would damage Detroit's ability to catch the Kansas City Royals for the division lead. The lineup for the Indians is full of left-handed hitters and switch hitters, so it should benefit the Tigers that they have two left-handers -- David Price and Kyle Lobstein -- going in the three-game series. The Tigers will also benefit from the fact that they will not have to face Indians ace Corey Kluber, although Carlos Carrasco has been excellent this season. Danny Salazar and Trevor Bauer are also capable starters. Lobstein struck out 10 in 5 1/3 innings in a start vs. the Indians earlier this month. This will mark the first time that Lobstein has faced a team for the second time in the majors, so it will be interesting to see what adjustments both Lobstein and the lineup for the Indians will make. The Tigers went 15-4 against the Indians in 2013, but they are just 8-8 against them this season.

It is an even race assuming KC loses the suspended game they need to finish. Not sure there is an advantage of one schedule over the other, except the remaining head to head games are at KC. Both teams should win the majority of these games, so it is just a matter of which team is hotter. The Tiger Aces are going to have to start pitching like Aces.

Dam..I played in a golf outing yesterday with some college buddies...long day and ended up drinking quite a bit more than planned. Crashed on the couch around the 6th inning and missed all the excitement.
Still liking Jack Morris in the booth. Trying to figure out who is trying harder not to step on each others toes, Jack or Rod? They both talked at the same time once and then neither said a word for a couple of minutes while Mario called the game.

Not included in that schedule is the Suspended CLE-KC game, which will completed on 9/22 with the Royals down 4-2 and batting in the bottom of the 10th.

And the fall-back logic is that Seattle is behind KC, which helps even more.
Interesting to see if they use Lobstein later this week and give the others an extra rest day or sit Lobstein and go with the vets.

I would guess they move up Verlander to Friday and then go Scherzer and Porcello on Saturday and Sunday on normal rest. Then you can pitch Lobstein whenever you want next week depending on the match-up, and also have him available out of the bullpen.

Absolutely. He's been better lately, it's all about the sinker that has been more of a stinker this year. Only two hits and 8 Ks over his last nine appearances, but five walks has got him in trouble three of those games.
Tigers are not the best match-up for the O's, but they have a magic horseshoe shoved up their asses this year and in baseball that is something. Clinching so soon may not be that great though, we'll see. I'm going to one of the first two games if they play.
Getting a good arm in the bullpen would be huge for the playoffs. I can't see the Tigers being successful against top teams with the current bullpen.
