***Detroit Tigers thread: 1st pick yet again, this is not fun*** (2 Viewers)

The Detroit Tigers have dominated the Kansas City Royals this season. But if they miss the playoffs, they will have a mediocre record against the three worst teams in their division to blame.

The Tigers are 11-5 in 16 games with the Royals, who hold a one-game lead over the Tigers in the Central. But the Tigers are .500 against every other team in the Central Division.

Here is the Tigers' record this season against each of their division foes:

Tigers vs. AL Central teams

vs. Royals: 11-5

vs. Indians: 8-8

vs. White Sox: 8-8

vs. Twins: 6-6

The Tigers have outscored the Royals by 27 runs in 16 meetings, but they have outscored the Indians, White Sox and Twins by just six runs in 44 games. Here is that breakdown:

Tigers' runs-opponents runs

Tigers 85, Royals 58

Tigers 85, Indians 77

Tigers 75, White Sox 74

Twins 76, Tigers 73

How have the Tigers and Royals fared against the teams they play the rest of the way? Glad you asked.

Detroit Tigers

vs. Indians (three games): 8-8

at Twins (three games): 8-8

at Royals (three games): 11-5

vs. White Sox (three games): 6-6

vs. Twins (four games): 8-8

Kansas City Royals

vs. Red Sox (four games): 0-3

vs. White Sox (three games): 8-4

vs. Tigers (three games): 5-11

at Indians (four games): 7-9*

at White Sox (four games): 8-4

(*-The 7-9 record does not include a suspended game that will be completed Sept. 22 in Kansas City. The Indians hold a 4-2 lead heading into the bottom of the 10th inning in that game.)

That 0-3 record against the Red Sox is interesting based on where those teams stand today. The Red Sox completed a sweep of the Royals on July 20. A day later, the Royals suffered a 3-1 loss to the White Sox to fall to 48-50.

The Royals are 32-14 since.

What does all this mean? Not that much. The Central Division title will be decided on the field over the next two-plus weeks.

But these numbers do confirm two things. One, if the Tigers win the division, one of the main reasons will be because they beat up on the Royals. Two, if the Tigers don't win the division, their mediocre results against the three teams that trail them in the division will be to blame.

Here's a quick look at the next series for the Detroit Tigers:

Opponent: Cleveland Indians

Site: Comerica Park in Detroit

Records: Tigers, 80-66 (2nd in AL Central); Indians, 76-69 (3rd in AL Central)

Schedule

Friday: LHP David Price (13-11, 3.33 ERA) vs. RHP Carlos Carrasco (7-4, 2.69 ERA), 7:08 p.m., FSD, MLB Network

Saturday: LHP Kyle Lobstein (1-0, 2.78 ERA) vs. RHP Danny Salazar (6-7, 4.19 ERA), 7:08 p.m., FSD

Sunday: RHP Justin Verlander (13-12, 4.82 ERA) vs. RHP Trevor Bauer (5-8, 4.12 ERA), 1:08 p.m., FSD, TBS

Scouting the Indians: The Indians remain in contention for a playoff spot and were helped by a doubleheader sweep of the Twins on Thursday. But they are running out of time. Beating the Tigers in their three-game series this weekend would be extremely helpful to their chances and would damage Detroit's ability to catch the Kansas City Royals for the division lead. The lineup for the Indians is full of left-handed hitters and switch hitters, so it should benefit the Tigers that they have two left-handers -- David Price and Kyle Lobstein -- going in the three-game series. The Tigers will also benefit from the fact that they will not have to face Indians ace Corey Kluber, although Carlos Carrasco has been excellent this season. Danny Salazar and Trevor Bauer are also capable starters. Lobstein struck out 10 in 5 1/3 innings in a start vs. the Indians earlier this month. This will mark the first time that Lobstein has faced a team for the second time in the majors, so it will be interesting to see what adjustments both Lobstein and the lineup for the Indians will make. The Tigers went 15-4 against the Indians in 2013, but they are just 8-8 against them this season.

It is an even race assuming KC loses the suspended game they need to finish. Not sure there is an advantage of one schedule over the other, except the remaining head to head games are at KC. Both teams should win the majority of these games, so it is just a matter of which team is hotter. The Tiger Aces are going to have to start pitching like Aces.

-- Eugenio Suarez is back at shortstop after sitting out the past four games. Andrew Romine, who started four straight games, will be available as a defensive replacement tonight if needed.

-- Indians starter Carlos Carrasco is 4-0 with a 0.70 ERA in his past six starts since rejoining Cleveland's rotation Aug. 10. He gave up just one run and struck out a career-high 10 over 5 1/3 innings when he faced the Tigers on Sept. 1.

-- Tigers starter David Price is 2-3 with a 4.10 ERA in seven starts since being dealt by Tampa Bay around the non-waiver trade deadline. He has a 7.13 ERA in his last three starts.

GAME NOTES

-- Miguel Cabrera is back at first base tonight after spending the past four games as the Tigers' designated hitter. Victor Martinez has been tabbed tonight's DH.

-- Eugenio Suarez is back on the bench tonight. Andrew Romine will get the starting nod at shortstop. I assume it's largely because rookie left-handed pitcher Kyle Lobstein is starting for the Tigers tonight.

-- Lobstein tossed 5 2/3 innings of one-run ball en route to his first major league win in his last start and has limited opponents to a .206 average spanning three career starts. Lobstein is 1-0 with a 1.54 ERA in his first two starts at home.

-- Cleveland starter Danny Salazar, who returned to the Indians' rotation in late July, posted a 2.30 ERA in eight starts before being tagged for six earned runs in 4 2/3 innings in his start last Monday.

-- The Tigers reclaimed sole possession of first place in the AL Central Division for the first time since Aug. 10 with a win -- coupled with a Kansas City loss -- last night. The Tigers own a half-game lead over the Royals.

-- The Tigers have won four of their last five and 13 of their last 20. The Indians are 4 1/2 games behind the Tigers and are four games behind the Royals and Mariners, both of whom are tied for the second wild-card spot in the AL.

-- The forecast tonight calls for decreasing clouds with temperatures steady near 58 degrees. No rain is expected to fall tonight.

Dam..I played in a golf outing yesterday with some college buddies...long day and ended up drinking quite a bit more than planned. Crashed on the couch around the 6th inning and missed all the excitement.

Still liking Jack Morris in the booth. Trying to figure out who is trying harder not to step on each others toes, Jack or Rod? They both talked at the same time once and then neither said a word for a couple of minutes while Mario called the game.

GAME NOTES

-- Question marks, again, were penciled next to the names of Miguel Cabrera and Victor Martinez on the official lineup. Tigers manager Brad Ausmus said he would need to talk to Cabrera before determining who would be tabbed today's DH. (Update: Miguel Cabrera has been tabbed the DH.)

-- Justin Verlander, today's starter, allowed four runs over seven innings in his start last Monday. He's given up at least four runs in four of his last five starts, going 3-2 with a 6.26 ERA.

-- Cleveland starter Trevor Bauer struck out eight over a career high-tying eight innings in his start last Tuesday. He gave up four runs and six hits over 5 2/3 innings in Cleveland's 11-4 loss to the Tigers last Thursday.

-- Andrew Romine is back at shortstop today. It marks the sixth time in last seven games. Eugenio Suarez and Hernan Perez are available off the bench if needed.

-- Torii Hunter is back in the lineup today. Typically, Hunter is given a day off when a day game follows a night game, however, Ausmus said Hunter is needed in the starting lineup everyday with only 14 games remaining in the regular season.

-- The Tigers maintained sole possession of first place in the AL Central Division with a win Saturday. Kansas City also won Saturday to remain within a half-game. The magic number for the Tigers to win their fourth straight division title is 15.

-- The Tigers have won five of their last six and 14 of their last 21. The Indians are 5 1/2 games behind the Tigers and are five games behind the Royals, who currently owns the second wild-card spot in the AL.

-- The forecast tonight calls for partly cloudy skies with temperatures rising towards the low 60s. Some clouds this evening will give way to mainly clear skies overnight. No rain is expected today.

lol at CC Lee throwing a wild pitch that scores a run when trying to intentionally walk someone. You don't see that very often.

Can't recall that happening before, but it probably has.
I saw it in a spring training game last year involving the Nats.
Whenever I hear Chen-Chong Lee I always think "ool that's kinda racist".Great time for a sweep.
Especially with the Royals looking like they are going to loose their series to the Red Sox.

Not included in that schedule is the Suspended CLE-KC game, which will completed on 9/22 with the Royals down 4-2 and batting in the bottom of the 10th.

The magic number is 13.

And the fall-back logic is that Seattle is behind KC, which helps even more.

Interesting to see if they use Lobstein later this week and give the others an extra rest day or sit Lobstein and go with the vets.

I would guess they move up Verlander to Friday and then go Scherzer and Porcello on Saturday and Sunday on normal rest. Then you can pitch Lobstein whenever you want next week depending on the match-up, and also have him available out of the bullpen.

You guys still have the makings of the team that gets hot at the right time and goes on a deep post-season run. Will be cheering for KC to be the Orioles' ALDS opponent, though I fully expect it to be the Tigers.

Haven't looked up the numbers yet, but my perception is that the Tigers have pretty much kicked the crap out of the O's in recent seasons, including earlier this year. Is Jim Johnson going to be on your post-season roster if you make the playoffs?

Absolutely. He's been better lately, it's all about the sinker that has been more of a stinker this year. Only two hits and 8 Ks over his last nine appearances, but five walks has got him in trouble three of those games.

Tigers are not the best match-up for the O's, but they have a magic horseshoe shoved up their asses this year and in baseball that is something. Clinching so soon may not be that great though, we'll see. I'm going to one of the first two games if they play.

GAME NOTES

-- As expected, Alex Avila is not in the starting lineup tonight. Avila left Sunday's game following his at-bat in the seventh inning after complaining of headaches. The Tigers said he exited with lightheadedness.

-- Avila, who has a history of concussions, is considered to be day-to-day, but it's unclear when he will be ready to return. Bryan Holaday will get the start over rookie catcher James McCann.

-- Miguel Cabrera returns to first base after being tabbed designated hitter Sunday. It's just the fifth time in 14 games this month that Cabrera has started at first. Victor Martinez will bat as the designated hitter.

-- For the seventh time in eight games, Andrew Romine will start at shortstop. Eugenio Suarez and Hernan Perez are available off the bench.

-- The Tigers were expected to face Tommy Milone, but he's out with shoulder fatigue and a sore neck. Instead, they'll get Anthony Swarzak, who has made just one start since 2012. He's 0-2 with a 12.66 ERA in three starts against the Tigers.

-- Max Scherzer, today's starter, has won each of his last five starts against Minnesota dating back to April 29, 2013. During that span, he has a 2.87 ERA with 36 strikeouts during the stretch.

-- The Tigers have won six of their last seven and 15 of their last 22. They own a 1 1/2-game lead over the Royals, who currently own the second wild-card spot in the American League.

-- The forecast in Minneapolis tonight calls for mostly sunny skies with temperatures steady or falling to near 55 degrees. No rain is expected tonight.

Here's a quick look at the next series for the Detroit Tigers:

Opponent: Minnesota Twins

Site: Target Field in Minneapolis

Records: Tigers, 83-66 (1st in AL Central); Twins, 63-86 (5th in AL Central)

Schedule

Monday: RHP Max Scherzer (16-5, 3.19 ERA) vs. RHP Anthony Swarzak (3-1, 3.95 ERA), 8:10 p.m., FSD

Tuesday: RHP Rick Porcello (15-11, 3.23 ERA) vs. RHP Ricky Nolasco (5-11, 5.64 ERA), 8:10 p.m., FSD

Wednesday: LHP David Price (14-11, 3.26 ERA) vs. RHP Kyle Gibson (11-11, 4.58 ERA), 8:10 p.m., FSD

Scouting the Twins: The Tigers have won six of seven and will play 10 of their 13 remaining games against the bottom two teams in the AL Central. But the Twins, who are riding the heels of a 2-4 road trip, have given Detroit fits this season, having won six of 12 games. Swept in a doubleheader Saturday, the Twins came back to win Sunday for just the second time in 10 games. Could they play spoiler with just two weeks remaining? The Tigers were expected to face Tommy Milone on Monday, but he's out with shoulder fatigue and a sore neck. Instead, they'll get Anthony Swarzak, who has made just one start since 2012. He'll counter Max Scherzer, who is 8-2 in his career against the Twins and has won his last five starts in the series. Detroit will also miss Twins ace Phil Hughes after a rainout on Friday pushed his scheduled start back to Saturday and potentially cost him the chance to claim a bonus worth a reported $500,000. As a result, Twins right-hander Kyle Gibson is expected to start the series finale Wednesday.
