***Detroit Tigers thread: 1st pick yet again, this is not fun*** (1 Viewer)

Nice win, good job by Soria.

ChiSox bullpen ####ed the dog hard, as expected. What a sorry ### team.
I figured one or both of these games would turn. It is great to see the Tigerss bats coming up big lately. The Tigers need to win this. The Royals are just not going to roll over.

At one point in the bottom of the ninth, both KC and Minn had a guy on second. Soria got us out of our jam; too bad the stinkin' Sox couldn't do the same. Max is probably frustrated he missed yet another win (but then don't give up 4 runs, buddy).

Porcello going for his 16th win again tonight. His last win was on my birthday, three weeks ago. Phenomenal 2nd half stats - 2.94, 50 Ks/6 BBs, but only 3-6. Here's hoping he gets some decent defense for a change.

Pitching Nathan more than one day in a row is dicey.
i know it was just one outing but Joakim Soria looked pretty good a couple of days ago.
Getting a good arm in the bullpen would be huge for the playoffs. I can't see the Tigers being successful against top teams with the current bullpen.
With 3 "closers" in Nathan, Soria, & Johnson, what we lack in quality we make up in quantity.

MINNEAPOLIS -- Nick Castellanos was a late scratch from the starting lineup for the Detroit Tigers for their game Tuesday night against the Minnesota Twins.

The Tigers announced about an hour prior to first pitch that Castellanos would not start due to left foot soreness. He fouled a ball off of his left foot in his final at-bat Monday night.

Don Kelly will shift from center field to third base to replace Castellanos. Rajai Davis was inserted as the starting center fielder.

The new lineup looks like this:

1. Ian Kinsler, 2B

2. Torii Hunter, RF

3. Miguel Cabrera, 1B

4. Victor Martinez, DH

5. J.D. Martinez, LF

6. Don Kelly, 3B

7. Bryan Holaday, C

8. Andrew Romine, SS

9. Rajai Davis, CF

The clubhouse was closed to media members at the time of the announcement, so no further details are available regarding the injury to Castellanos. He is hitting .266 with 10 home runs and 60 RBIs for the Tigers this season.

GAME NOTES

-- Alex Avila is out of the starting lineup for a second straight day. Avila left Sunday's game following his at-bat in the seventh inning after complaining of headaches. The Tigers said he exited with lightheadedness.

-- Miguel Cabrera is back at first base for a second straight game. Cabrera's health no longer seems to be a serious concern. He is batting .436 with six home runs in 14 games this month and extended his on-base streak to 14 games Monday.

-- Right-hander Ricky Nolasco, today's starter for the Twins, took his fifth straight loss Thursday, despite allowing just a run over seven innings against the Indians. Nolaso is in the first year of a four-year, $49 million contract he signed this winter.

-- J.D. Martinez is batting .400 with three home and nine RBIs over his last six games.

-- The Tigers have won four straight and seven of their last eight. They own a 1 1/2-game lead over the Royals, who currently own the second wild-card spot in the American League after a walk-off win over the White Sox on Monday night.

-- Detroit's magic number is down to 12. The magic number represents the combination of wins by the leading team and losses by the second-place (or tied) team that would clinch the division title.

-- The forecast in Minneapolis tonight calls for mostly sunny skies with temperatures steady or falling to near 55 degrees. No rain is expected tonight.

Carrera is not a 9th inning defensive replacement. Hate that guy.

So disappointing. Completely wasted a historic shot.

16mTwinsRadio@TwinsRadio

.@JDMartinez14 just hit his 8th 9th inning homer. Only A-Rod (8 in 2007) & Tony Bautista (10 in 2000) have hit 8+ 9th inning HRS in a Season
Porcello cruising - retired the last 8 batters he faced while throwing 31 pitches - but no, let's manage by the book and bring our non-closer for his 7th BS.

Soria for President!!!
Nathan just needs to go. I would rather see Coke close. But really should give the ball to Soria the rest of the way.
umm, first blown save in over a month. Second loss since all star break. Just sayin...
He leads the league in blow jobs. His ERA/WHIP bites. He has a negative WAR. Every outing is shaky. Even three run leads don't seem safe.

"We've already talked to Zeke (Carrera) about it," an absolutely composed Brad Ausmus said in the manager's office moments after the game. "He was trying his tail off, which is good. But the smart play there is if you're not sure you're going to catch it, you contain it and keep (the runners) at first and second. I think if he could do it over again, that's what he would do.

"We're human beings. They're going to make mistakes out there. I'm sure for a split-second he thought he could catch the ball."
That's the proper spin for the media and fans. The unfiltered translation: Ezekial, you're 27, been a pro for ten years, and you've spent parts of the last four years in The Show. That's a mental blunder that's understandable when you're 17, inexcusable at your age and at this level. Keep the GD ball in front of you.Herrera and Davis both got charged with runs last night, first time in three months for each. Still 1.5 GA, Magic Number down to 11.

At least the Sox rallied against KC. Tonight, we've got Price on the mound, and KC faces Sale. Let's knock two more off the magic number.

I was all set to write take 2 out of 3 this weekend and tonight isn't an issue, but I just peaked at the schedule next week - KC dodges both Kluber and Sale.

So, yeah, tonight may be kinda important.

Every game is critical. KC has shown the ability to get hot and the Tigers have shown the ability to go cold.

I love the Tigers but even if they make the playoffs, there is a very, very slim chance to none at being Champions unless every starter goes nine innings every playoff game and avoid the bullpen.

MINNEAPOLIS -- Brad Ausmus said earlier this week that the standings would have no bearing on how he set up the rotation for this weekend. But it's abundantly clear that the opponent played a role.

On Wednesday afternoon, Ausmus announced his rotation for the three-game series against the second-place Kansas City Royals. The Tigers will start Justin Verlander, Max Scherzer and Rick Porcello in that series, skipping rookie Kyle Lobstein in the process.

Ausmus had been secretive this week about the rotation and even what factors were going into the decision. He cited "moving parts" as the reason behind the lack of a decision.

In the end, there was only one decision to make: whether to start Lobstein on Friday and allow the rest of the rotation to have an extra day's rest or to skip Lobstein against the Royals and move the rest of the rotation up. Ausmus opted for the latter.

"It's late in the season," Ausmus said. "People have aches and pains. Sometimes that extra day of rest is good when you have those aches and pains, but ultimately this is an extremely important series."

Lobstein will instead start Monday at Comerica Park against the Chicago White Sox. David Price, who starts tonight against the Twins, will start Tuesday with one extra day of rest. Barring something unforeseen, Price will take over the major-league lead for innings pitched during his start tonight, so an extra day might not be a bad idea.

"We thought about pitching him on regular rest," Ausmus said. "But just considering where his innings are and also, looking forward, that way Price ends up throwing the last game of the season as well."

Of course, who pitches the last game of the season could very well depend on whether that game means anything for the Tigers, who hold a 1 1/2-game lead over the Royals in the Central Division race. If they need a win, Price is set up to pitch in it. If they don't, they could push Price back to the wild-card game or Game 1 of the American League Division Series.

The pitching matchups for the weekend series look like this:

Tigers at Royals

Friday: RHP Justin Verlander (13-12, 4.81 ERA) vs. LHP Jason Vargas (11-9, 3.41 ERA)

Saturday: RHP Max Scherzer (16-5, 3.26 ERA) vs. RHP James Shields (14-7, 3.15 ERA)Sunday: RHP Rick Porcello (15-11, 3.19 ERA) vs. RHP Jeremy Guthrie (11-11, 4.35 ERA)

GAME NOTES

-- Alex Avila is out of the starting lineup for a third straight day. Avila left Sunday's game following his at-bat in the seventh inning after complaining of headaches. The Tigers said he exited with lightheadedness.

-- Tigers third baseman Nick Castellanos is back in the starting lineup tonight after he was a late scratch Tuesday due to a left foot injury. Castellanos fouled a ball off of his foot in his final at-bat Monday night.

-- Miguel Cabrera is back at first base for a third straight game. When the official lineup was initially posted, it was unclear whether Cabrera would play first base or be tabbed the designated hitter. Victor Martinez will be the DH tonight.

-- Twins shortstop Eduardo Escobar is not in the starting lineup tonight. He left Tuesday's game in the fourth inning with a jammed right shoulder after making a diving stop on a ground ball hit by Torii Hunter.

-- The Tigers have won seven of their last nine, but had a four-game win streak snapped Tuesday. They own a 1 1/2-game lead over the Royals, who own the second wild-card spot in the American League.

-- Twins starter Kyle Gibson Kyle Gibson has a 6.69 ERA over his last seven starts and is winless in the last five appearances. He allowed seven runs in three innings Thursday in a loss to the Cleveland Indians.

-- David Price, today's starter, is 3-3 with a 3.70 ERA in eight starts since joining the Tigers. He allowed one run on eight hits with seven strikeouts in 7 2/3 innings against the Indians en route to his 14th win last Friday.

-- Detroit's magic number is down to 11. The magic number represents the combination of wins by the leading team and losses by the second-place (or tied) team that would clinch the division title.

-- The forecast in Minneapolis tonight calls for sunny skies with temperatures slowly falling to near 65 degrees. No rain is expected tonight.

I love the Tigers but even if they make the playoffs, there is a very, very slim chance to none at being Champions unless every starter goes nine innings every playoff game and avoid the bullpen.
Pretty much the consensus is they'll either fail to seal the deal next week, or won't get past the Angels. It's not just the erratic bullpen. Their defense atrocious besides C/2B. They've been shut out 9 times, which is unfathomable when you look at their offensive rankings.

I also think there's a fair amount of thrice bitten twice shy going on. If they win their fourth straight division title they'll have done it with the worst closer of the run and with Miggy/JV respectively both having their worst seasons as a Tiger. If they couldn't win the past three years when they were better or even favorites, why invest emotionally in the weakest team of the four year run?

We'll see. There's a reason they play the games. Weird random #### goes down in the postseason. Why shouldn't we get lucky or get hot at the right moment? Agree with everyone's assessment on paper. They don't give out rings and trophies for the best team on paper.

Well I guess hoping that something in the Bullpen clicks and the defense can at least be average is about all we Tigers fans can do now.

Anibal seems like the likely starter to move to the bullpen, at least for the ALDS.

Do you think we could hope that Ausmus will start thinking outside the box a little?

WELP, THERE'S THE BELL RINGING AND I'M SALIVATING...NINTH INNING? ALRIGHT, JOE TIME. MIGHT BE THE WRONG TIME BUT HE'S OUR CLOSER. WIN OR LOSE. THERE IS ABSOLUTELY NO OTHER OPTION IT'S THE NINTH I BRING IN THE CLOSER. NO ONE ELSE CAN DO THIS JOB.

Yeah, probably not likely he tries anything else, eh? Nathan has been erratic from Day One, but let's keep acting like we got Mariano Rivera.

David laboring but he's still got it.

Why do people not get that the playoffs are a total crapshoot? Get there and anything can happen. Bottom line. I already see people in this thread talking about how they are in trouble in the playoffs. Every team is in trouble in the playoffs.

There is no tried and true formula. Sometimes offense wins. Other years its pitching or defense. Sometimes the hot team keeps steamrolling. Then there are times when the cold team comes to life.

Get there. That's all that matters. Then see what happens.

Royals won & Twins just hot the insurance run. G'nite all.

If you watch Audtin City Limits, the Americana show will be re-broadcast in about 7 weeks.
