Here is a good article on the Tigers defense. This team is just a couple years removed from having Cabera at third, Prince at first, Tori and Dirks in the outfield, and Peralta at short. In just two years, every defensive spot in the outfield and infield has been significantly upgraded and the Tigers now have a real defense and have not sacraficed their offense one bit. The fact that their defence has save a run per game makes a major difference. Really like how this team is looking this year.

Another great outing for Price - just a Garcia HR through 8 innings. Soria in the 9th?

Time for the Tigers to strike with the heart of their order in the bottom of the 8th.

Watched it live and I have no idea. He was out on the diamond appearing to stall, but then just walked back to the dugout without appealing. Odd, but I'll take it.

 
Ausmus is doing a great job so far. Last year his biggest problem was he had a losing formula with the bullpen but stuck with it. Having a starting rotation consistently giving 8 great innings and a closer who actually closes is making his job easy. Ausmus is making all the right calls. Lineups, pitching changes, aggressiveness..... :thumbup:

 
Like I said earlier, the transformation into a fast defensive team in basically one year has been crazy. As good as those big bats and big arms are, the base running and fielding are what makes the difference between good and great.

 
Let's not get ahead of ourselves. 10 games in baseball is like the one game in football. An indication of how good the team might be, but still a long long ways to go. Right now, there is nothing about this team that you can not be excited about. The team does not have depth, particularly in the bullpen, but this team is capable of greatness. Getting Rondon and JV back will be very nice. Hopefully JV just misses one more start.

I'll add these to the mix this weekend some time. Team record for steals is the 1911 NY Giants with 347. I'm having a hard time finding a good number for steals allowed.

Least stolen bases allowed by a team is proving to be a tough get. After some extensive Googling I think I've found the regular season record. I used the single season record the best % of put outs by a catcher to target the teams to look for: http://members.tripod.com/bb_catchers/catchers/thieves_smith.htmI thought the 1948 Brooklyn Dodgers would have the record http://www.baseball-reference.com/teams/BRO/1948.shtml at 39, but I checked the 1959 LA Dodgers just in case http://www.baseball-reference.com/teams/LAD/1959.shtml They only allowed 24 stolen bases in 1959. I think this is the record unless someone can come up with a lower number. I'll update all the stats later today and plan on adding the HR status just for giggles. For some additional info, McCann has allowed the Tiger's only SB against, not Avila.

The biggest surprise was Peralta scored better than what he deserved. I don't think they captured truely how pathetic his range is. Miggy was pretty bad at third, but last year Nick was really bad, but better this year. Kinsler has been a big improvement for the defense since his arrival. The outfield is much improved. Gose is really chasing down balls. The Tigers have moved from near bottom of the league, to 2nd place trailing only the Royals who are at a quite impressive +17 in runs saved so far.

Teams who are strong defensively up the middle usually are pretty good, especially if a few of those guys can hit. I've always said that people are too hard on Avila given his defensive abilities, all he has to do is walk like he can and he's a valuable in the lineup because he has occasional power surges. McCann is going to be an above average defensive catcher, so platooning them and saving Avila physically is critical over the course of the season. People were saying McCann wasn't gonna be ready, but he can hit lefties and he's good defensively so he's not a liability in a platoon where he's gonna get 20-25% of the PAs.

Team needs to take it very easy with Verlander, I still think he's the key to the team having championship aspirations. When he's 100% bring him back, even if that's in June.

 
Still on track for the most wins in a season and fewest errors in a season (Baseball reference has Cespedes with an error along with Iggy & Price, I recall the last 2 but not the one for Cespedes. Did he get tagged for one after a game concluded?)
