***Detroit Tigers thread: 1st pick yet again, this is not fun*** (3 Viewers)

Nathan hurt again. I imagine the guy was probably hurt last year too. Glad they are finding out about this now rather than letting him implode 10 times and taking his word he's ok. Not sure why we have such an affinity for avoiding DL stints, its cost us in the long run the last 2 years at least.
This one sounds really serious.

I hope he's ok.

Exactly. I hope he's ok.

But from a pure baseball perspective, I can't say that I'm terribly bummed out. No closer controversy and frankly I don't think he could even hack it as a middle reliever at this point with his skill-set. Perhaps it's time to hang it up.

:goodposting:

When I saw the "bad news for tigers" headline on tv, I thought VMart was going on the DL or Verlander had another setback.

Right now I'd trust Angel Freaking Nesbit over Nathan.

The reality is it is the most graceful way to end a bad situation. Never like to see anyone hurt, but Nathan was going to get boo'd off the field and eventually cut. Unfortunately we all get old.

I'm not really sure shredding your elbow is graceful. Unfortunately most athletes don't get treated like thoroughbreds at the end like Jeter. Always the way it's been. Even Babe Ruth went out forgetably.

David Price just gave up another run.

On a another note, how horrible is Brad Ausmus? Sending him out for the 3rd yesterday was laughable.

Hopefully now our pursuit of Soriano comes to fruition. No one had faith in Nathan but he was part of the bullpen construct. There is still a void in the setup role Soria was supposed to play.

Was really hoping Ausmus would take the reigns when given the job. He's just like Leyland though, let's players do whatever they feel like. Really kills things when you have one or two bad apples and him and the FO let players play through injuries. I'm really getting tired of seeing that. The DL is there for a reason and can be for as little as two weeks.

You have insider access? How do you know that any of what you just said is true?

Close to 40 million on the DL between Nathan and Verlander. Went to the game last night and left in the 6th as my feet were frozen. After the first inning lasted an hour I knew we were in for a long night at the ball park. It looked like we were watch BP for the Yankees

Soriano looked terrible last year, and there is a reason no one has signed him. I'm willing to wait on Rondon.Pass

Do you need glasses or do you just not see it happening? Miggy two years back and JV last year should have had DL stints to get them healthy for the playoffs. Ausmus will let a guy stay out their and get tattooed so their ego doesn't bruise. Nathan being closer all last year was insanity at its finest and it STILL took him blowing out his elbow before the door was shut on him being closer.Edit to add: Seems like Ausmus goes with the flow. DD has made sure to bring it what appears to be strong character guys and was quick to send Fielder and Garcia out of town when that situation got started.

Glasses...

Do you think Ausmus is the team doctor as well? Or are you assuming that the team medical staff strongly recommended DL time for those two but Ausmus decided to defer to the players' opinions?

You're making a huge leap here without knowing anything of what was said or done behind closed doors.

You see guys slowed by injuries, don't see them go on the DL, and then just like the rest of our media around here decide to write the narrative that Ausmus is pulling the strings.

Maybe he did overrule some doctors. Or maybe the doctors were unsure and he let the players make the call. Or just maybe the doctors told him that two weeks wouldn't do them any good so he might as well ride it out until the end of the season until they could have surgery.

There is some validity to these points. But with JV and Miggy, we don't even make the playoffs if they go on the DL down the stretch.

A question for Tigers homers: Phil Coke's shtick.

This is how he has been so far in the season. He gets ahead of hitters, 0-2, 1-2, looks sharp as hell, but then cannot put them away. His next few pitches are nibbles that get a foul tip. Pitches after that are wildly out of the strike zone, or are grooved and then pounded.

Same thing every time out. Very frustrating to watch.

Yeah that's him to the letter, good luck.

I'm blaming the weather. Having stood through 2 track meets in this #### this week, I can't imagine how miserable playing baseball was (I get that both teams had to play in this weather, but need something to explain the last 4 games away).

Simon's pitches have a ton of movement and he has a sneaky fastball because of it. His split has perfect change-up velocity compared to his fast ball (10-12 mph difference) and is cutter slams the inner half of the plate against lefties. He looks solid.

Best thing about Soria as the closer: he doesn't walk anyone

He's gonna have crappy days, but he's not going to get into trouble on other days because he walks two guys.

Oh I miss the days of the lead off walk in the 9th, promptly followed by a stolen base usually on defense indifference because we did not care if the tying run was in scoring position. Those were the days of glory. Just baiting the other team into believing they really had a good chance to win. But we had the last laugh most of the time.

I'd guess Velander is making the 10 game trip to be a cheerleader: http://www.detroitnews.com/story/sports/mlb/tigers/2015/04/25/verlander-will-accompany-tigers-game-trip/26360267/If The Tigers were truly optimistic he could resume throwing, wouldn't it make more sense to leave him home so he could possibly work with some live hitting in Toledo?

I wonder if they will catch a bit of a break over the next few weeks depending on the timing of the appeals of the suspensions for KC and The White Sox. It would be awesome if they could end up not having to face Sale and Smardzija in Chicago and KC's three pitchers either this week or the next,
