Simon Says: groove a bunch of pitches

He's been really bad for five starts now, and only will go five innings tonight. Double whammy.

 
Even without Miggy this lineup is still pretty damn good. Castellanos and Avila are going to have to step it up, especially Nick. I'm still a believer because that swing is so sweet, but he has to stop swinging at pitches a foot outside the zone. Once he does that he's gonna get fastball counts, and he can flat out hit fastballs. Again, he just turned 23 in March but we aren't even seeing five or six game hot streaks. Once I even see one of those I'm gonna be very encouraged.

 
Ginormous offense in Seattle! Maybe the guys realize that with Miggy out, they all need to step up. Seattle pitching helped, too, but I'll take it. Good to see our all-star selections.

I just heard on the radio that since being benched, Castellanos has at least one hit in 11 of 12 games and is batting .382.

 
Wish I could delete Gopher's dumb posts in this thread.

Tigers had two of the top 50 prospects according to Baseball America's mid-season report. Those guys are Jake Thompson who we traded for Soria, and Willy Adames who we traded for Price. I have no problem with the Price deal but sending Thompson and Knebel, who is now a very good reliever in Milwaukee for a reliever, was way too much. Giving up guys like that for relievers is dumb and I don't think they should do that again.

Eugenio Suarez looks like a good player in Cincy and Devon Travis seems to be an above average 2Bman going forward as well, two other guys they had last year and traded. At some point you have to break the cycle of trading prospects away for one or two year rentals. I think that time has come. They have a very good offensive core with Miggy, VMart, Kinsler, Iggy, and JDM with some decent complimentary parts. I think beyond that and JV who we are stuck with for better or worse, it's probably time to consider overhauling almost everything else. That includes manager and maybe the GM also. Might be time for a fresh perspective.

ETA: One other thing is none of us have any idea how much influence Mr I still wields. It's his team and obviously if I was him I'd want to win now, but at a certain point you are going in reverse.

ETA2: Oh, I forgot Robbie Ray who now has given up two or less runs in six of eight starts. Looks like he'll easily outperform Fister this year. :bye:

Nice base running Gose, had he been running all out he scores easily in the 10th. But he wasn't, because this team runs bases like fat people ####.

A snippet from The News about possible trade targets in the weeks ahead:

On the list of those who would provide immediate help ahead of October free agency are: Johnny Cueto and Mike Leake of the Reds; Mat Latos and Dan Haren, Marlins; Jeff Samardzija, White Sox; Aaron Harang of the Phillies; and Scott Kazmir, A's, but only if Oakland decides to wave the white flag on 2015.

Players with longer contracts the Tigers might prefer are problematic, to say the least: Cole Hamels, the Phillies ace regarded as July's top prize, is hyper-expensive (trade demands and remaining contract); and John Danks of the White Sox.

Hamels, making $22.5 million this year, will earn the same amount in 2016, 2017 and 2018, with a $20 million club option in 2019. Danks' contract: $14.25 million this year and next.

Or, consider a left-hander who might be the Tigers' most feasible option: Jorge De La Rosa of the Rockies, who walks a few too many batters but who is signed through 2016 and who might love trading Coors Field and its thin air for a lovely pitcher's park, Comerica, which, more than likely will be welcoming a new starter in the weeks ahead.

All shtick aside, the unconditional love that DD got/gets in this thread just made me surprised to see that comment.

I'll keep my smarmy to myself and hopefully come with stinkier bait if I ever want to fish.

 
I didn't say he should be fired, although he may consider some staff changes. He's one of the top five if not the best GM in baseball, you can read that outside this thread also.

We probably should just avoid mentioning it, but he's starting to hit like people thought he would. I'm fine with him being streaky but when you're streaky you should also have hot streaks along with cold streaks. Nick's career so far in the big leagues has been one big cold streak.I mean this is one of only two top ten position prospects the Tigers have had the last 20 years, we need him to be good.

According to my super highly advanced baseballer insider metrics, The problem with this team is two-fold:

1. They have a hard time coming back when they are down.

2. They have a hard time keeping a lead.

This was pretty much the lineup I wanted coming out of spring training (at least the first 5). The other lineup started out well but did need to be shaken up some.

Averaging over 7 runs a game now after the junior skipper stole my lineup (lol) . And that's with the best hitter in the game getting all of 2 at bats in that span.

Of course some of it has to do with the better balance the team now has with as many as 5 (five) left handed hitters in the lineup, while still able to have an all righty lineup (like last night) against LHPs. I'm not the only one here to notice the previous imbalance.

Needless to say this team still needs help, but most of it is on the pitching side imo.

 
All season I have not seen McCann get hit much at all with foul tips or when he does he just keeps playing. AA starts last night and was dinged 3-4 times where he had to stand up and walk around shaking his head or limping. Does AA seem to take more hits or does he just show the pain more?

Both.

 
That probably goes down as the most pathetic performance by a bullpen in the history of the Tigers. My only caveat about putting it #1 is that it didn't cost us a World Series appearance.

Close, but I remember a similar situation in 1986. The bullpen was in shambles. Willie Hernandez wssn't getting it done nor was anyone else. We were leading the Angels 12-5 in the 9th and gave up 8 runs in the 9th and lost 13-12. **** Schofield of all people hit a game-winning grand slam off Willie. That was worse in my opinion.

I was hoping for about 100 good innings out of him. It was more like 50 before he went to ####. It probably did not help that Brad kept letting him pitch 120 pitch games. He has not been a workhorse, nor has ever been a workhorse.
