***Detroit Tigers thread: 1st pick yet again, this is not fun*** (3 Viewers)

Hey!  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wnMayTr3lWk

Sans K-Rod I thought that was a nice effort.  JV looked terrific, Upton was good, Kinsler delivered, Lowe recovered nicely, and VErhagen and Greene closed it out.

I have to admit that I'm numb after game 2 of the 2013 ALCS, that K-Rod performance didn't phase me.  He should be fine, he's captain meltdown for a couple of games and then saves 25 straight.  :banned:

I am glad I am in Japan and did not have to endure that roller coaster.   Let's hope he just got that crap out if his system.  Otherwise a good day for the Tigers.

Agree with the above. Other than the bullpen blowing the lead, the other negative is the terrible baserunning continues.

I'm also not overly concerned about K-Rod over the long haul.

Detroit is like Hospice for closers. Guys are totally dead when they get here, but the handwriting is on the wall.  Not a big fan of the pitch-to-contact type closers, but I think that's what we've got to deal with this year.  LIneup looks decent, just a matter of pitching.

I liked what I saw from the offense.  Have not seen Upton play much before  but he looks smooth and has all the tools. Verlander had a good outing that could have been a very good outing...that dam hanging curve got him again.  I think Wilson is going to be solid, I like what I saw from Lowe even though he gave up a run.  K-Rod should bounce back...I don`t like that he was only hitting 88-89 with his fastball but time will tell. Greene looked good but does he have a mullet or tail going on??

Have to like that the Miami stadium has half empty by the 7th inning on opening night.  I guess the game was cutting into club time. They should have moved this franchise instead of wasting all that money of a new stadium.

Lots of positives last night:

1.  Verlander looked good although when you are facing a lineup where Prado is the cleanup hitter I am still going to reserve judgment for a little bit.  He was throwing strikes and locating well though.

2.  Upton made some fantastic defensive plays in LF last night.  We needed all of them.

3.  I like the new set up guys, but as D in the D said, I am not a fan of the pitch to contact closers.  Oh well, it was one game though so we will see how things play out.  It just seems like the closer position is like the goalie position used to be back in the day for the Wings before they got Mike Vernon and started their Cup runs.

4.  The Victor HR was obviously great but he still looked gimpy running around the bases - almost Gibson-esque.

5.  I love Kinsler batting leadoff.  I just hope he can stay healthy.

6.  I still have no confidence in Brad Ausmus.  I just knew Dee Gordon was going to tie the game off K-Rod, we would have been better off walking him (I know he would have been the go ahead run but he ended up on base anyway after driving in the tying run - sometimes you need to do stuff based on gut and not always by the book).

7.  Disappointed Marlins Man only stayed three innings.  He must have needed to go meet random people to pose for more pics on Twitter.

Team looked very good dispite KRod's meltdown... But that is going to happen when your closer throws 88 and his best pitch is a change up.

Victor's crush from the left side was a good sign, just gotta stock up on the duck tape with him.

Bullpen looked overall pretty good with the 7th,8th,10th, and 11th inning guys picking up the 9th inning guy.

I was impressed with VerHagen's curve last night.  If that's repeatable then he can take a big step up.

Tigers had had 10 different left fielders the last 10 opening days. Forgot about Jones and Anderson. A little surprised Dirks is out of baseball.  Thought he was a decent 4th or 5th outfielder with a left handed bat.

2007- Craig Monroe – Appeared in 99 games for the Tigers before being traded to the Cubs. He hit .222 with 11 HRs and 55 RBI.

2008- Jacque Jones – Appeared in 24 games for the Tigers before being released. He hit .165 with 1 HR and 5 RBI.

2009 – Josh Anderson – Appeared in 74 games before being traded by the Tigers to the Royals. He hit .242 with no HRs and 16 RBI.

2010 – Johnny Damon – Appeared in 145 games for the Tigers. He hit .271 with 8 HRs and 51 RBI.

2011 – Ryan Raburn – Appeared in 121 games for the Tigers. He hit .256 with 14 HRs and 49 RBI.

2012 – Delmon Young – Appeared in 151 games for the Tigers. He hit .267 with 18 HRs and 74 RBI.

2013 – Andy Dirks – Appeared in 131 games for the Tigers. He hit .256 with 9 HRs and 37 RBI.

2014 – Rajai Davis – Appeared in 134 games for the Tigers. He hit .282 with 8 HRs and 51 RBI.

2015 – Yoenis Cespedes – Appeared in 102 games for the Tigers before being traded to the New York Yankees. He hit .293 with 18 HRs and 61 RBI.

Starting pitching below avg? That's being kind.  It's 1 of the worst rotations in baseball.  Zimmerman sucked in the NL East last year, he's going to improve in the AL now? Verlander has 1 good 1/2 a season in the last 3 years.  The next full season Anibal throws will be his 1st and Mike F'n Pelfrey is your 4th starter?!?

This rotation is pathetic.  Perhaps they can outscore their opponents enough to be somewhat respectable come year's end.  Perhaps..
Zimmerman sucked his way thru 7 innings of two-hit ball.

So far three solid performances from the starters.  Next we see how the real question marks can perform.

JZimm had the circle change working today, that's gonna be a big pitch for him since he's never been able to throw it before with any consistency.  I counted five lazy outs on the change today, and two swing and misses.  INterested to see the pitch f/x breakdown.

Headed out to watch the Tigers in a few hours.  The Hanshin Tigers.  8-4 and in first place after a dramatic comeback in the 9th inning yesterday.  Will pick up a jersey.

Pelfrey predictions??  The sub freezing weather might help him out a bit.

6 IP  7 hits, 2 BBs, 3 Ks, 4 ER.
