***Detroit Tigers thread: 1st pick yet again, this is not fun*** (3 Viewers)

Would have been better off taking 20 million dollars and setting it on fire. Meet Mike Pelfrey everyone, the new Joe Nathan. No one wanted him and we overpaid for him.

Looks like bad Verlander today
Pirates fouled off 20 two strike pitches.  Just could not put guys away. 9th hitter works an 0-2 count into a 10 pitch AB and an RBI single. Jaso worked an 0-2 into an 11 pitch AB before getting a hit. Tough game to watch.

Today's game a bit easier.  The Tigers lineup is tough.

Greene looked fantastic once he got by the shaky first inning.   He should get Pelfrey's spot in the starting rotation.  I doubt Ausmus reaches that conclusion before August, but we can hope.  Greene has the potential to be the best starter we have if you can accept that last year's meltdown was injury related  This rotation will not have a true ace, but looks so far like it could be solid enough to win more games than they lose if Pelfrey is not in it

Also on the plus side, K-Rod did not look like potato head.

Greene is certainly looking like Mr. April.  Maybe it was the blood clots that caused his problems and he will have a bounce back season.

Looks like Norris will be ready to come back by the end of the month.  They're still trying to build up his pitch count in rehab starts.  It will be interesting to see what happens with the rotation once he is ready to return, if Greene is still pitching well and Pelfrey is not.  There are still two weeks to sort all that out - a lot can happen.  Why they signed Pelfrey in the first place is beyond me and to make things worse he is signed for two years.  I am skeptical they do this but ideally they put him in the bullpen and send Farmer down to get some work in Toledo.  I still think he got rushed through the system and being able to pitch at Toledo this season would be a good thing for his continued development.

K-Rod still looked mediocre at best.  Walked the first hitter on four pitches and then got a Valverde-type double play with a hard liner to second base combined with a boneheaded base running error.  I don't think he threw a pitch over 89 mph again.  I don't see how throwing at that velocity is going to bode well for him this season.

Salty has a nice swing..even his misses look good.  Anyone miss Avila?  One concern about K-Rod is he only hit 89 with his best fastball.  Greene looked as good as he did in the spring and should be in front of Pelfrey already.

Tigers have a tough lineup to get through unscathed.

Salty's swing looks 100 times better than Avilia.  Really not a soft spot in the lineup and the top is just downright brutal.

Yep, Tigers have scored at least 4 runs every game and are averaging 6 runs per game.  Will be nice to see Maybin back too which will be an upgrade over Gose at the plate.
Gose is not that bad as the 8th batter though.  Plus I like him on the bases.  Been so long since I have seen Maybin play I forgot what he looks like as a player.

Seems like Ausmus decided to give many a rest and fielded about as weak of a lineup as possible.  Zimmerman pitching well so far.  2-0 tigers thanks to Nick.

Even with the "new and improved" bullpen the end of Tigers games this season are still stressful.  K-Rod up next.  If they can get out of Pitt with a W after giving up 14 hits today then they really stole one.  It would be great if Nick took the next step this season as a hitter - it seems like he is going to and that would be huge for the lineup.

K-Rod with another unstressful outing.  No sure how effective an 88 mph fastball and an 84 mph change up can be, but it has seemed to work the last two games.

A lot of good things happening ...good showings from the starting rotation, Nick, JD, and other hitting well.  A nice start to the season.

The lineup was expected to be very good, but if Nick continues to hit like this, it will really be awesome.  The starting rotation could perform better than expected if it can get and stay healthy.  But it is very thin.  The less we use Pelfrey, the better.  The bullpen is a mix bag and is going to be the source of a lot of the heartburn this season.  This team is better than expected, but last years crash and burn is still in memory.  The race for the division is going to be a #####.

It was not stressful but it looks like he does not have much left in the tank.  K-Rod is basically only throwing his fastball and change. Benoit got away with it for years because he was hitting 95-96.  With K-Rod topping out at 88-89 it is a little worrisome.

I never said Pelfrey was promising.  In fact, I have always said the exact opposite.  They shouldn't have signed him let alone for two years.   Problem is he isn't going anywhere at this point - best case scenario is he is sent to the bullpen later in the season given that he is signed for two years and is out of options.
I was not saying you...I meant what did the Tigers see in him.  I just feel after 7-8 years you are what you are.  Just did not see any upside with this signing.

He had a couple good years early on.  I think they are hoping he is just now fully recovered from Tommy John surgery, and can be a much better pitcher than last year.  It is a longshot, so $16 million was paying too much.  The real explaination is desparation.  If they had any confidence in Shane Greene, the Tigers would not have signed him.  They looked at their rotation and saw mostly question marks.

They scored 7 runs with Romine, a 3rd string catcher, and a pitcher in the batting lineup.

Pelfrey pitches out of no-out base loaded jam in the second.  Nearly 50 pitches so far.  Will be lucky to make it thru 5 innings.  Been in bad jams the first two innings, but has pitch well to limit the damage.  Been an unfriendly strike zone for Pelfrey while Keuchel has gotten the benefit of the doubt on a couple calls.

Buck Farmer has his best outing in quite awhile and is rewarded with a flight to Toledo.  Farmers stuff looked really good last night.

Too bad they wasted a decent start & bullpen by getting shut out.

The post positive is that the bullpen is completely rested with Buck sent back to the farm.

Guys are getting healthy which is a good thing.  Farmer will get more work in the minors, and the outing will certainly put him the top of the recall list.

Take away the six walks that pelfrey gave up and he had a good outing.  Maybe he has turned the corner on his career.
The real difference in the game was the ump's strike zone.  Pelfrey was painting the outside of the plate, but the ump never gave him a call.  Meanwhile  Keuchel  was working the inside of the plate more and getting calls which were 6" off the plate.  In the first inning it was the difference between the Tigers not scoring a run while contributing to the Astros getting run.  The ump was at least consistant, but was off.  Pelfrey has a solid game and pitched really well in many very tight situations.  Keuchel pitched very well too.  You can't win if you don't score.

Nick is just doing an awesome job at the plate.  McHugh's curves are making most Tigers look stupid, while Nick just drives them for hits.

Oh boy, could get real interesting if K-Rod comes in with a one-run lead.   :scared:

Update:  Tigers add one for a two run lead.

Update:  K-Rod faces only faces three batters thanks to a DP.   Save #2.
