***Detroit Tigers thread: 1st pick yet again, this is not fun*** (3 Viewers)

For most of the year this team has only had 2 consistent starting pitchers...Verlander and Fulmer. Zimmermann had a great start but has been hurt and/or ineffective since. The rest of the starters have been inconsistent for most of the year.

K Rod has been money since opening day. Justin Wilson had one bad week but has been great otherwise. Shayne Greene saved the back end of the bullpen. The others have all been up and down for most of the year but showing signs of improvement lately.

Given all that (especially having only 2 consistent starting pitchers for most of the year), if anyone had told me this team would be contending with all those pitching problems, I would have called them crazy.

I have been as critical as anyone of Ausmus. I thought he should have been fired last year and earlier this year. But its time to give credit where credit is due and Ausmus deserves a ton of credit for having a team with the above serious pitching flaws contending for a playoff spot and the division. He kept them together earlier in the year when they easily could have fallen apart.

If this team makes the playoffs (and especially if they win the division), Ausmus should get strong consideration for manager of the year. I never thought I would ever think such a thing but he has done a great overall job this year.

Like I've said all along, it takes a few years to evaluate a manager and his effectiveness.  I think Jim Leyland talking to me and telling me Brad is ok reinforced that we have a guy that is probably an average MLB manager.  Not everyone can be Bochy, Showalter, and Maddon.  Those guys are elite, no question.  The rest of the guys are ok, and you have to look around the league to see what you have.  I don't like Brad playing Aviles more than he should, but I love him going to McCann while other fans hate that.  His bullpen use has been fine, tonight he used Wilson in the 7th and Greene in the 8th.  Perfect.  Play match-ups, both those dudes can do the work.

His handling of the pitching staff has been pretty good IMO.  Dubee obviously has played a role, but damn...they have had a ton of really bad stuff happen. I mean he's had to deal with 17 Anibal starts, Boyd and Norris being thrown in, and a terrific rookie in Fulmer who he has handled superbly.  I try not to be a homer but people are way too hard on Ausmus and this team is responding, just like Leyland told me they would.  Yeah I'm name dropping but we had a serious conversation. Jim believes in Brad and I believe in Jim .

Brad will be back next year and to be honest, he might be around for awhile.  Not sure if he'll bring a World Series win home, but I think he has the players to do it.  I really like not making any moves at the deadline and I like the way this team has responded after looking dead 45 days ago.  If they make the playoffs, great.  But they are competitive and I like they are flying under the radar.  All the ESPN ######s proclaimed the Tribe and Rangers as the champs already, so I'll take my team being in the thick of a pennant race every damn time.  Again, I don't want to return to 1991 to 2005, that was just awful as a fan.  Give me this team every damn year, I love having a chance in a sport where it's so hard to win.

But Brad: Runs tough to come by against deGrom.  So you get 1st and 2nd, nobody out ...maybe have Upton, a king of Ks, bunt them over?  But no.  Upton strikes out; the new guy hits into a DP.  (Not watching on TV in case there was a bunt attempt.)

But yeah, using him three straight days seems like something they probably shouldn't do.  They got him hot with two guys on in the 8th, I'm wondering if he got the call if they had been up 4-1.

Why is Mark Lowe still on this team? If they DFA'd him no one would take him. See if he accepts an assignment to Toledo to work on his issues down there. No damn reason he's still on the active roster.

Even if he is on the team, there is ZERO excuse to use him in a 2 run game. Period.

So lets start with the obvious - its horrible that Prince Fielder is retiring due to injuries. Totally sucks.

BUT, what does this mean for the Tigers? Will the money they owe now be covered by insurance? Thus freeing up a little more for them?

ETA: Crap.

#Tigers had insurance on Prince Fielder when he was here. Not anymore. So they're still on hook for about $26M more.

It's already a sunk cost. Not too worried about it moving forward. They've won that deal in a lot of different ways.

I think they are just trying to get to September 1st with Lowe so they can carry him over into next season. Putting him on the DL would seem like a good idea to get us there.

What a job by Alex Wilson getting out of that no out, bases loaded jam.  That first pitch to Lind that went 700 feet but was five feet foul made my heart skip, but what a job getting out of that.

Everyone has been pummeling King Felix this year but the Tigers can't do a thing.  Last night they had a chance to blow it wide open, couldn't hit wRISP.  Night before, Iwakuma who also has been pedestrian shut them out.  If Mariners win this game they are a half game behind the Tigers, so they've let another team run them down in the course of three days.  Neat.

And they aren't gonna do well in Texas either, that team has a four leaf clover, a pot of gold, and a winning lottery ticket shoved up their asses.

Good situational hitting once again Miggy, can't look at more than one pitch before popping it up softly to shallow RF with a runner on third.  :X

Still waiting for JUP to actually do something, and waiting...and waiting.

You can't get swept in that series, terrible.  I wish I would invest less time in this team, people like football more than baseball not because the game is better, but because they don't have to spend so much time in agony.

The Tigers have wasted a lot of very good performances by their starters in this 4-game skid.  Very frustrating.  I am not even sure they can steal a game in the Texas series.  This is not a championship team.

I'm hoping so.  No offense to yinz.

Kinsler has a higher WAR in three years (16.3) than Chet had in nine years (15.5) with the team.  Also Steve Kemp never did this
The more I watch that the worse it looks.  What if the catcher was a few more steps behind Fielder...he would have dove and been embedded in the dirt 5 feet short of third base waiting to be tagged out.

An article suggesting the Tigers should consider signing A-Rod as a pinch hitter.   Considering the current options it would be an upgrade.

With one out in the 5th the Tigers had 11 hits, 2 BBs, and one run (and then Aviles rolled into a DP).  That is almost impossible to do, but yet they did it anyway.  Only the 2016 Rangers can get away with this crap, should be 6-0 at least.

That's an ugly win, 18 baserunners, three outs on the basepaths, 12 stranded runners, and two runs.  The Rangers got one runner as far as 2B the whole game.  Oof, what a dumb team.  I thought they were gonna lose that one.

Matt Boyd is rising though, can't believe he did that to that line-up.

The Tigers would have had zero chance this season without the emergence of Fulmer and Boyd.   Really amazing how those two have been pitching.  The Tigers need to find a way so Anibal never pitches again as a Tiger, and if that mean promoting a few Mud Hens, so be it   Give Shane Greene a couple of starts.  Do something.   You can not continue to roll a guy out there that consistently loses the game in the first friggin inning.

Trying to fix one hole by creating another isn't it. Greene has been solid in the pen. Leave him there.

There is no doubt he would be a temporary loss to the pen.  But as it is now, we are forfeiting any chance to win every fifth game.  That is a bigger hole than finding a 7th inning guy for a few weeks.

Given Greene's history how will this help? A couple good games then a couple bad games, then injured and of no use in the 7th inning anymore.

Anibal sucks, but I hate this option.

We knew coming into the season they had no chance unless at least one of the rookies was really good. I must have said ten times in this thread.

As far as Greene, he's their best pen arm and they have to stretch him out. He needs to stay right where he is in 2016 and he might be the future closer. He has the stuff.
