***Detroit Tigers thread: 1st pick yet again, this is not fun*** (1 Viewer)

from the news:

After the game Tuesday, manager Brad Ausmus revealed the MRI came back clean on Maybin.

“It was good news,” he said. “There’s no new damage on his thumb. It’s just a matter of letting the contusion heal.”

Ausmus said Maybin would not play Wednesday, which with the off-day Thursday would give him three full days to recuperate.

“It's kind of what I expected, really,” Ausmus said. “He said he could pinch-run today. We'll see in terms of swinging a bat. That's really the only thing that concerns me. I'm not really concerned about playing the outfield.

“We just have to see how he heals.”

One night doesn't make a career, but I wish they would have called up Jones sooner. Also slightly disappointed no Jimenez this year.  That being said if Rondon continues his progression/reemergence it will be a nice 8/9 combo down the line.

Isn't Jimenez likely to be called up for the expansion?

I'm not as knowledgable of contract terms but I feel like this would unnecessarily start his clock without being playoff roster eligible. Unless he's already on the 40-man but I didn't think that was the case.

He is not, but I think Saupold may lose his spot (arrested for assault).  I do not know about the contract implications, but I imagine there could be some.  But with the Tigers shakiness in the bullpen, I would bring him up.

Could speed up the arbitration process by a whole season. GM's usually error on the side of conservative for that issue unless they want someone for the playoff roster. Used to be a lot simpler pre-arbitration.

JaCoby Jones with a big lead off double in the 9th which turned into the winning run.   Two games and already had the two biggest hits in each game.

Jimenez was very pedestrian once getting to Toledo, but has picked things up lately. I can't say enough how much I appreciate the patience of this front office.

Just beating the Twinkees and the Sux (I think 11 games) ain't going to be enough.  Tigers need to figure out how to beat the Royals and the Tribe (about 13 games).  They also have a series with Balt and the Braves.  Tigers have been horrible against good teams and great against horrid teams.  Won't go far in the playoff and probably won't even make the playoffs if that continues.  I really like this trend of being able to come back from deficits and win ballgames though.

At least their destiny is in their own hands.

Last year they did the right thing by selling because they had no shot. Now they have a shot and this time of the year that 's all you can ask. F that give up & wait for 5 years from now crap.

Terrible pitching matchup tonight unless the good Sanchez shows up tonight.  Even if the good Sanchez shows up, Ausmus would be wise to have a quick hook after the 5th.  Most likely will be able to go to bed early with little hope of a win.

Shouldn't you be practicing for Dancing With The Stars?

They are 5-20 vs the Royals and Tribe is the problem.  They are 29-18 vs the Red Sox, Astros, Marlins, Yankees, Mets, Blue Jays, Nats, Pirates, and Mariners.  They are 3-7 vs the Rangers and Orioles but otherwise they've been good against good teams.

Text to my buddy after Davis hit Kinsler: They haven't scored off Davis since March 2014 but this guy ain't right.  They can do this.

:coffee:

Upton with a huge HR. That's his 7th HR with 18 RBI in his last 14 games (52 ABs). He has been smoking hot since sitting out for 3 games. Couldn't come at a better time.

Call me crazy but I'd put Norris in the bullpen when JZimm comes back.  Leave Anibal in the rotation and let Norris open it up a little in the pen with a 35 pitch max pitch count.  I'd like to see him get the confidence to go with this terrific arm, and regular work sets him up to be a great #4 starter next year.  Needs to work on his pitch location and how to best employ his fastball, I think letting him do that in the middle innings is going to benefit him.
Norris looked great today.

Alex Wilson has been the Tigers best reliever the last month or so but he wasn't good today.  Basically if he comes in and walks guys, he's not right.  Once Dyson hit that ball that Miggy probably should have made a play on, he should have been pulled for a lefty to face Gordon.  I think Brad generally uses his bullpen right but he left Alex in there one batter to long for sure, and it almost cost them the game.

Rondon has been decent lately, really would be nice for him to step up now and become a reliable option.  I think Greene has been overused, Justin Wilson is streaky either unhittable or terrible, and Alex Wilson has been pitching over his head.

The starting pitching has been pretty good for about a month now, which does reduce the pressure on the pen, but Norris, Boyd, and Sanchez are gonna have trouble getting through six.  Good weekend, needed to win two of three and they did that.  Do the same in Chicago and then come home and cook those birds!

I am liking the thought of the lineup once Maybin and Nick get healthy:

Kinsler

Maybin

Miggy

VM

JD

J-Up

Nick

McCann/Salty

Iggy

Really solid first 7 hitters, and good power at 8 and decent speed at 9.

I think they might flip flop Kinsler and Maybin.

Tigers have a 6% chance to win the division and a 51% chance of getting a wild card as of today.  Every game is a big game until they are officially in or out.

Here we go!

If someone gave me 15 to 1 odds that the Tigers will win the division, I would take $100.  Not saying they will, but with all the head to head games, there is at least a chance to pick up games.  A 57% chance of making the playoffs has to be because of their favorable schedule.  Lots of games to be played.

Upton may earn his contract yet.

There was talk that everything Upton was hitting he was pulling.  He went to right and right-center his last two HR.

JV was awesome again today and the bullpen did some fine work giving them a shot.  One game at a time, Boyd v Miguel Gonzalez tomorrow night.

Eat'em up Tigers, eat'em up!

A good read on how the farm system is developing.  I've seen a lot of these guys play in West Michigan and it's fun seeing them progress.  Spencer Turnbull really intrigues me if he can stay healthy.

Erie should be really good next year with Stewart, Gerber, Azocar, and probably Burrows.  I think people want Stewart to be a part of the big club next year, but unless he's playing every day I don't think that is gonna happen.  He is only going to be able to play in LF with his noodle arm, so he probably needs at least one more year.

I talked about Gerber a lot last year in here, he followed up a great year last year with another really good one this year.  I think he could make the team out of camp next year because he can play CF and RF.

They have some really good arms down there that are going to eventually at least help the bullpen, and I can't remember the last time they've had this many quality bats that look like they'll play at the major league level (JaCoby Jones included in that group).  Glad they held tight at the trade deadline, it was definitely not a good idea to sell but I'm also glad they didn't buy either.  The big club is good enough to win 90 games, if you develop these guys you might be in a spot to win 90 games every year.

Why in the #### is Mark Lowe pitching in a 3-1 game?
After an absolutely horrific first half of the season, Lowe has been one of the better Tigers relievers post All-star break.  He has struck out 18 in 14-2/3 and posted an ERA of 3.07.  Meanwhile J. Wilson and Greene have not been so good, posting ERAs well above 5. A. Wilson has been excellent and K-Rod and Rondon have been pretty good in that time frame.  When you need a strikeout, Lowe and Rondon have been the best choices.
