If I'm reading the schedule right in order to avoid a JV vs. the Twins matchup he'd have to lose a start somewhere. I don't like that option. Do you see a schedule that would work?So is it setting up to be Norris, Fulmer, JV for the O's series? That's gonna be a playoff-type atmosphere at Comerica.
Brad needs to set up his rotation so JV starts against Balt, Cle, KC and Cle and misses the two series against Minn.
It also helps that on the way out Dave Dom. found a bunch of young talent for expiring contracts. This will relieve a little pressure on those still at AAA or AA from having to be called up too soon.Erie should be really good next year with Stewart, Gerber, Azocar, and probably Burrows. I think people want Stewart to be a part of the big club next year, but unless he's playing every day I don't think that is gonna happen. He is only going to be able to play in LF with his noodle arm, so he probably needs at least one more year.
I talked about Gerber a lot last year in here, he followed up a great year last year with another really good one this year. I think he could make the team out of camp next year because he can play CF and RF.
They have some really good arms down there that are going to eventually at least help the bullpen, and I can't remember the last time they've had this many quality bats that look like they'll play at the major league level (JaCoby Jones included in that group). Glad they held tight at the trade deadline, it was definitely not a good idea to sell but I'm also glad they didn't buy either. The big club is good enough to win 90 games, if you develop these guys you might be in a spot to win 90 games every year.
Yep it looks like JV would get stuck against the Twins on the 22nd and return for the Cle series on the 27th. He could then pitch the last game of the season vs Atl or maybe get held back to pitch a wild card, if necessary. I skimmed the scheduled and thought they could have him miss Minn and pitch vs Cle on the 16th so he could miss the next Minn series anyway, I guess they all count one anyway. I would rather have him going against Cle at this point than KC given that if we can go 5-2 against Cle to close within 1-1/2 games that should put some pressure on them as we close the season against Atl.MAC_32 said:If I'm reading the schedule right in order to avoid a JV vs. the Twins matchup he'd have to lose a start somewhere. I'd like to see Fulmer's start against the Twins next Wednesday get pushed back to Saturday against the Tribe though. Fill a game in the Twins series with bullpen guys (or throw Zimm in there and see what happens) and hope for the best. If he is pushed back then that would line him up for both KC (Fri) and the Indians (Wed) again then make him available for a play-in a/o wildcard game.
Looks like Zimmermann on Saturday. Fulmer on Friday and JV on Sunday. Id rather have Zimmermann go against the Twins in his first start back but oh well.MAC_32 said:If I'm reading the schedule right in order to avoid a JV vs. the Twins matchup he'd have to lose a start somewhere. Have to give Dombrowski credit. In Fulmer, Boyd and Norris 3 out of next years 5 starters acquired at the trade deadline.White Sox pitching coach Don Cooper doesn't miss many meals.![]()
Great job by Matt Boyd again tonight, he's really growing up these past two months.![]()
Yeah they have to stop using him in big spots. He and jwil have looked great at times but now they both look terrible. Leaning on Rondon more I guess, but after looking decent most of the year the backend can't be trusted. That sucks.Somebody better fix Shane Green, stat.
Historically that's not such a great thing, I don't think he's beaten them since April '14, but I understand why you'd want him in that spot.skillz said:So is it setting up to be Norris, Fulmer, JV for the O's series? That's gonna be a playoff-type atmosphere at Comerica.

It's actually been a mixed bag vs Cleveland over his career. Since 2008 they barely have a .650 OPS against him, but did have some bad early seasons vs the Indians and this year hasn't been kind. He's been the best pitcher in the AL since May, of course we want him out there as much as possible.Historically that's not such a great thing, I don't think he's beaten them since April '14, but I understand why you'd want him in that spot.
Need to throw away the 1 inning book. Tigers RP are not that good so when one is hot and has a fast clean inning put them back out for another. Rondon looked sharp and only threw 8 pitches. Alex only threw 13. With an off day both of them easily could have went another inning.Greene's last 8 outings:
9 1/3 innings, 17 hits, 3 BB, 14 earned runs for an ERA of 13.50 and a WHIP of 2.20.
Never like the scripted way Ausmus (and many other managers) use their bullpen. Expecting 3 or 4 different guys to all be on the same nite is crazy, go with the hot hand and win today's game first.Need to throw away the 1 inning book. Yeah I was thinking the same thing. If you get to the 8th and still have Rondon, JWil, and Greene available then use them all in that inning if you need to.Need to throw away the 1 inning book. You on this bandwagon gb?Looking forward to seeing the Tigers playing the Birds, the Tigers just don't give up!
Just love an underdog fighting for a playoff spot in Sept. Twins bandwagon is hurtingYou on this bandwagon gb?
This.So basically Zimmermann can't be counted on as a reliable starter for the rest of the season. So that leaves them with JV, Fulmer, Boyd and Pelfrey/Sanchez/Norris.
Just when you think this team is done, they stay in it. That is how the whole season has gone. Need to sweep Minnesota or, at a minimum, take 3 of 4. At least the AL East teams are all going to beat up on each other the rest of the season so if the Tigers can get some wins banked they should be able to get back to a wild card. I have really enjoyed this team's fight. They could have mailed it in earlier this season but they are still in the playoff chase heading to the home stretch. That is all we can ask for.Needed a 4-2 week, got a 2-4 week. It's an uphill climb now, they probably need to win a minimum of 13 of their last 20 and that might not be enough. Plus the tiebreakers aren't good with Jays and Orioles having those.
Yeah I've been saying this also. All things considered I'm not sure they should even be in the hunt right now, a lot has gone wrong with injuries and inconsistency. Overall it's been a fun year.skillz said:I have really enjoyed this team's fight. They could have mailed it in earlier this season but they are still in the playoff chase heading to the home stretch. It is pretty weird when you feel your rookie pitchers give you the best chance to win.Good news - Zimmermann is being skipped for his next start.
Bad news - Looks like Pelfrey will be starting in his place.
I don't think the team has much of a choice. If they get the team to the playoffs and are pitching best, let them keep going. Lets them build up some post-season experience too. I could see them using Sanchez instead of Norris possibly as the #4 and giving him a short leash. It is pretty weird when you feel your rookie pitchers give you the best chance to win.
Assuming the Tigers slide into the playoffs, are we good with rolling with JV and three rookies as our starting pitchers?
My fault I bet themBoyd was due a stinker, and boy does he stink tonight.
Fulmer pulling some lumberjack tail, hairy but manageable with big cans. These rookies are pulling some quality tail
Boyds girl looked good. The one on the far left looked good too. Hopefully they show them againFulmer pulling some lumberjack tail, hairy but manageable with big cans.
