In some of those seasons the games didn't mean much when he started hitting well since the team was already out of contention. Aside from him striking out way too damn much, he was an abortion in the field. I still remember when he was in CF (a position he had no business playing) and fell through the door in Cleveland to let Peralta get an inside the park HR. Then, even after he left, he had that goofy play for Cleveland where he threw the ball sideways and Moustakas got an inside the park HR. How that guy survived in MLB as long as he did amazes me. The Tigers shouldn't do him any favors by helping him stay in MLB for another year too long.Raburn was a good hitter late in the season batting .298 in the months of Aug/Sept/Oct. His problem was he was a .205 hitter before he got to August which always had the fans so turned off to him by the time he started hitting well.
No kidding. They got a better return going over the cap and paying the luxury tax than they did paying Pelfrey. Avila better hold tight and not give players away - although I get that Ilitch (or someone in his family at this point since I don't think he is all with it mentally any longer) makes that call.Just pay it...the Pistons rent at the Pizza Palace will cover the tab.
With the current market, holding to trade deadline seems like the most logical action.I would think they will hold onto JD as a trade deadline chip. If Tigers are out of it and he is having a decent year they could get some value at that time.
I keep looking for news on A-Jax.Anything interesting left in the clearance bin? A-Jax? Bourn?
You would think A-Jax would take a 2- 3 million deal to try and resurrect his career in a good offense. A nice year could get him a 2-3 year deal next off season somewhere.I keep looking for news on A-Jax.
Seems like the most logical fit. Reasonably low risk with a decent upside.Da Guru said:You would think A-Jax would take a 2- 3 million deal to try and resurrect his career in a good offense. A nice year could get him a 2-3 year deal next off season somewhere.
I dunno. His upside offensively is A-Jax's floor, IMHO. A-Jax could legitimately leadoff for you, no way you want a .240 hitter as your leadoff. He would bat no higher than 8th in the lineup, probably in the 9th spot. If A-Jax is willing to sign a one-year sub-$5 mill deal, sign him. Tigers should be sending feelers out, but it seems they have little interest in spending anything. If they are in contention, they are going to end up dropping much more mid-season to fill this gap. Bourjos would only be a very good defensive solution. And if you want a defensive solution, we already have Gose. who bats left.Leroy Hoard said:Of everyone listed so far he seems to have the most upside. Seems like a natural for a big park with sometimes iffy corner outfielders.
At this stage I don`t see a trade coming until the deadline now. Tigers were without a healthy Zimmerman from the middle of May, JD missed 5-6 weeks, Nick who was having a breakout season missed the last 2 months. They were trotting Pelfrey out there every 5 days for BP.I am always happy when I visit this forum and see this thread has not been bumped, because that probably means they have not made any stupid trades yet. But why should the Tigers be happy with having nearly the same team as last year which missed out of the playoffs? Well because we started last year with a starting rotation which included Sanchez, Pelfrey, and Greene. Those three started 51 games last year in which the Tigers went 19-32. Once those three were switched out for Boyd, Fulmer, and Norris the Tigers were legitimate contenders. I am also more optimistic about the bullpen this year. Of course centerfield is still a huge question mark, but the nucleus of a very solid offensive lineup is still in tact. Of course that could change tomorrow if the Tigers trade Kinsler and/or JD.
Pelfrey usually gave us a fighting chance. Tigers were 10-12 in his starts. The Tigers were only 8-18 in games Sanchez started. Granted, there is a bit of luck which goes into wins and loses, but damn Sanchez has to go.At this stage I don`t see a trade coming until the deadline now. Just having those 3 back and getting Pelfrey out of the rotation has to be worth a 6-7 game swing in the record. If they played .400 ball vs Cleveland and KC they win the division. Dug too big of a hole getting pounded by the Tribe the first 4 series.
I am good with both of them gone and giving a younger arm a shot. For some reason the Tigers still think Sanchez can rebound as he did have some high K games last year but also got hit hard.Pelfrey usually gave us a fighting chance. Tigers were 10-12 in his starts. I posted a link earlier this offseason that showed they are hugging the ~$220 secondary ceiling for luxury tax. It seems pretty clear they are hell bent on not going over right now. That's why only a trove of minor league arms have been brought out to compete for the pen and only Alex Avila was brought back at C. I'm guessing AJax is asking for more then $5/6 and Bourjos/Blanco they can get for $2 or less.I don't see the attraction to Bourjos over AJax. Of course if they end up throwing several million at either, the question is why not just keep Maybin.
I don`t think a GM would ever say enough,,,,,but I think Chris Ilitch would. Been rumored for awhile that Chris is not enamored with the baseball business like the old man is. Might be a Gilbert or Gores in the Tigers future. So I went back and looked at it they were supposedly at 212.5 with 215 being the upper ceiling and any signing beyond that is a 36% tax. That was before Alex Avila. So if they spent $6 mil it would end up being more like $8.25 whereas a $2 mil would end up only at a $2.75. I'm guessig this is one of those things where after years of being spoiled either Avila has said enough or the younger Illitch has said enough.
too bad 88% of the world's population is right handedThe correct answer was, "Who is Mikie Mahtook?... Mahtook"
I'm a lefty and a very successful loogy at that.too bad 88% of the world's population is right handed
I am guessing this is the final answer. A platoon of Mahtook and Collins sprinkled with a bit of Jones. The correct answer was, "Who is Mikie Mahtook?... Mahtook"
Gose DFA'd... wonder if Bourjos still on the table.
Tampa has a glut of OF and apparently like the right-handed bat of newly-acquired Jason Coats better. Coats was picked up off waivers from the White Sox so he's not exactly DiMaggio.Just what we needed..another redneck from LSU.
Watched some video and he is athletic with pop in his bat. Just wonder why a cheap team like Tampa would give up a young inexpensive player under team control with potential. That is not their MO.
Perfect batter for Kluber and Salazar to pad their whiff totals. He doesn't walk much and he strikes out a lot. He fits right in!
This team has the talent to be a top 5 team offensively, assuming they stay healthy. Pitching is the real wildcard. Were those rookies for real last year? Can Zimmerman bounce back from his neck injury. Sanchez and Pelfrey should be mostly out of the picture, but perhaps spot starting or at best the 5th spot in the rotation. Hopefully one of them is gone by the start of the season. The bullpen is starting to look legitimate with an effective closer and some guys starting to emerge. Last season their pitching was below average, this season it could/should be above average. The Tigers will be very competitive this year, but there is significant health risks counting on a bunch of 34-38 year olds.In all seriousness, where do you Tiger fan see your team contending? Is the window closing on contending before rebuilding or not? I get the sense that this may be the last harrah for now.
I wouldn't sleep on them, not with this starting pitching and the big bats. Fade at your own peril IMO.In all seriousness, where do you Tiger fan see your team contending? Is the window closing on contending before rebuilding or not? I get the sense that this may be the last harrah for now.
The guys on the MLB Network seemed to like Detroit. They talked about how no team can match the Tigers corner production. Miggy, Nick, JUP and JD are capable of a combined 110 HRs and close to 400 RBIs. add in Kinsler, a "healthy?" V-Mart and you have another possible 40 HRs and 150 RBIs.I wouldn't sleep on them, not with this starting pitching and the big bats. Fade at your own peril IMO.
