Devery Henderson vs Robert Meachem (1 Viewer)

Meachem just got back from toe surgery, looked pretty good the other night. I was just happy he was playing.

Has he lost his spot in the lineup to Henderson?
He never had it, Henderson was the starter last year and is the starter this year. Colston was on the field last year for the most WR snaps followed closly by Henderson. The Saints have had a different guy be the #2 the last three years, Henderson, Moore, Meacham. Anyone betting on Meacham to repete is foolish.

Honestly, it doesn't really matter which one of the two starts, since New Orleans is a pass-crazed offense anyway.

Meachem is more versatile and can be used in the red zone or on fly patterns. Henderson is basically a go-deep guy with inconsistent hands.

Meachem also tied Colston for the team lead in TD catches with 9. He even rushed for nearly 100 yards as well; I'd much rather have Meachem.

Hate to do this but...

....Lance Moore's back too, yaknow.

But Meachem's a red zone threat. In the Chargers preseason game the bolts follishly blitzed the safety and it was laughable, Brees just 1...2...3 hit Meachem at the goal line.

My feeling about Meach last year was start him WR2-3 in games where the Saints should score (extra) highly, i.e. don't leave him in week after week (though of course you could get lucky any given week). Same would go for Henderson.

So, I guess you're predicting an all together different player to land #2?

Are you basing your claim on the fact that it's been a different guy the last 3 years, or on Henderson seeing more snaps last year?

I don't think either of those items dictate this years stats....

Meachum has a semi-breakout season last year, and he's a very talented WR... He could very well take hold of that #2 spot this year.

Contrary to popular opinion, Meacham did not supplant Henderson in the starting lineup last year. I believe Henderson played the most snaps of any receiver last year in NO, and was the primary #2. I don't see Henderson's role diminishing much this year, while Moore will have an impact on Meacham's

Meacham's most prominant role is in 2TE/FB or 3TE sets as the sole WR. He's the best blocker, and got some very juicy deep ball opportunities matched up in single coverage out of run formations. That won't change. He was also the 3rdWR, and while he did sub out Colston and Henderson on occasion, it was rare that he was on the field in 2WR sets. That will likely change.

Moore is going to chew into alot of Meachams 3WR work (that is, reclaim his role from 2008), and will also get alot more action in 2WR work subbing for Colston and Henderson. If one of the two goes down, it is likely that he'll be inserted into their role in the offense rather than Meacham.

At this point, its hard for me to see any of the three being startable other than as high upside bye week fillers, until an injury occurs to concentrate the opportunities (this includes injuries to Shockey and Bush).

Is Meachem seriously the #4 WR for NO like FBG's have him on their depth chart?

I have a tough time believing he doesnt get the most targets after Colston this year...he actually had 3 more targets than Colston over the last 6 weeks

My expectation is that he will get the most targets after Colston. There are a lot of mouths to feed in that offense, however. I still say Meachem is the better value of the two. Meachem scored more TDs last year than Henderson has in the last THREE years.

Very easy to see (to me at least) Bush getting more targets. I actually expect it (I'm predicting far more Bush usage out wide this year)

The only consistent thing about both of these guys is that that they're inconsistent. I've had both of them, and what a headache. My feelings are, if you can't get Brees, PT, or Colston - then your taking a gamble with any other player. Devery and Meachem have their flashes, but still put up some stinker scores some weeks. That said, I'd probably pick Meachem over Devery.
