Did we all sleep on Derrick Mason? (1 Viewer)

During the offseason, there was lots of buzz surrounding Mark Clayton and Demetrius Williams as potential breakout candidates. Did we all forget how good Derrick Mason is?

2003: 95/1303/8 rank: 7

2004: 96/1168/7 rank: 17

2005: 86/1073/3 rank: 24

2006: 68/750/2

2007 (two games): 15/130

He's been targeted a ton by both McNair and Boller and is among the NFL leaders in receptions. He's on pace for about 1000 yards once again.

Based on the last ADP update, he was drafted around WR#46. Based on the stats he's put up so far, he looks like a top-25 WR once again. Granted, he's faced some mediocre passing defenses, but he does seem to be the focus of Baltimore passing game this year.

Thoughts?

First, I agree he is underated. When HASN'T Mason been underated? That said, he is no more than an ok #3. Won't have much upside but in reception leagues at least, should get you some points every week. The guy is a consummate professional.

If D. Williams misses any time (not sure if he was hurt or just dinged a bit) then Mason definate may be worth a start as a #3 in larger leagues.

I don't think anyone forgot about him, but he tailed off last year in favor of Clayton and is probably benefiting from the youngster's injuries. Passing yardage will still probably be limited for this team, so Heap is really the guy to have for consistent production.

He was basically Boller's dumpoff on shallow routes. Once Clayton is full speed, his role will diminish. Decent #3 for PPR for now, but thats about it.

For me stud = elite player (at any level) so he is not a stud.

Looking at that offense and how he tailed off last year myself and most others had severely downgraded him. I still think he is nothing more then bench material and he will probably tail off after Clayton is healthy.

I should say NFL stud, not FF stud.
That neither. Averaging 65 yards a game and 8.7 y/r isnt going to raise many eyebrows- plus Baltimore probably doesnt plan on throwing the ball 40 times a game all season. I do think Mason actually benefits from Boller- McNair has been drastically overhyped the past couple of years.

Exactly. As long as clayton remains hobbled, Mason will be good for several catches for moderate yards and a small chance of a score. When Clayton comes back, I would expect his looks to go down a bit, although I wouldn't be surprised to see them do more 3WR stuff to get Williams, Mason and Clayton all on the field (less 2 TE sets)

I didn't forget about him. I grabbed Mark Clayton instead. As soon as Mark Clayton is healthy, Mason's numbers will drop. In the meantime, I am keeping Clayton on the bench, while I have Lee Evans, Plaxico Burress, and Braylon Edwards to start over him.

Anyone that may have been relying on Clayton as a WR3, would be very wise to grab Mason until Clayton is at full speed. if available, which he seems to be in a lot of leagues due to his poor performance last year.
this is a huge question IMO. as youll notice, no one in this thread has said whats wrong with Clayton healthwise. I think thats telling. Might be because nobody knows for sure. He could get better quickly, but whatever the injury is it was affecting him all preseason and clearly he is not right yet.Mason is not a beast, but he is an ideal WR4/matchup play filler in PPR leagues.

I'm still wondering about this. In preseason (and week one), he was limited by an ankle injury. For week 2 he was listed as questionable with a toe injury.

I didn't pay him a lot of attention - I thought Clayton would have the bigger year, But I don't think I slept on a "stud."

Man I wish I didn't just type that.

mason's role has been revitalized with clayton's absence. once clayton gets back to full health expect mason's numbers to drop off.

he has done a nice job this year though.

I thought Clayton had clearly overtaken Mason last year and expected big numbers out of him.

He has been hobbled so far and it is still unclear to me exactly what is wrong with Clayton. Mason has greatly benifited from Claytons absence and is getting the catches I expected Clayton to have.

I think Clayton would do a lot more with those ops than Mason has with them and would be much closer to performing like a stud than Mason has been.

Once Clayton is healthy that may still end up being the case. We'll see.

Mason reminds me a lot of Bobby Engram. Both of these guys are solid possession receivers that have earned the trust of their QB. But I wouldn't consider them studs. Both are also currently benefiting from other WR injuries on their teams. They are solid blue collar WR #3 with WR#2 scores posted every now and then.

Everyone overlooked the fact that they changed his position/role in the offense. Mason was excited about the move but barely any media paid any attention at all. The media doesnt waste their time with old wide recievers who dont run their mouth. Clayton not being healthy helped too. It wasnt like Mason's receptions had dropped off the map though. Mason was still the WR1 even while Clayton was piling up yards with speed and youth last year. The switch has helped Mason and nobody even talks about it.

Bobby Engram?!I mean, no one's confusing Mason with Jerry Rice. But, you just compared Derrick Mason-->Bobby Engram. Didn't even pay some respect to the superior player by at least comparing Engram-->Mason.

Mason: 630/8146/43 since 1997

Engram: 517/6251/30 since 1996

Mason: 5 1000-yd seasons

Engram: 0

No real comparison. Even their respective roles don't equate to each other.
