Digital Camera pic of the day (3 Viewers)

That is amazing. Is there no heavy Photoshop work on that image?
A lot of color work went into it (spotting, selective color adjustment layers, hue/saturation adjustment layers, channel curves, etc.). There is no cut and paste, montage, collage, etc. work; nothing added to this image from another image. Here is another version from the same RAW file but processed to lool like an old toned black and white:

From Alcatraz Too

How did you get the forground AND the background so equally focused?

I'll have to verify when I get home but I think that was shot at 24mm and f11 both of which contribute to extended depth of field. I also try to intentionally focus on something about 1/3 of the way into the depth of field that I am aiming for. And I exaggerated the sharpness in the final web image a touch which also adds to apparent depth of field.

Cool. Look great.

It's really beautiful.

I've never used Photoshop or other software but was playing around just with the HP Image software on some northern lights pictures which didn't turn out too well (my nikon digital doesn't have a full manual mode that I can tell so I wasn't able to extend exposure as long as I wanted for tough night northern lights pics) and it made a big difference pulling out the color from the darkness.

My question is if other programs (like HP Image Zone) are worth a crap or if it's really on Photoshop. TIA.

Thank you.I don't know anything about HP Image Zone.

Adobe makes an editor called Photoshop Elements 5 that is much cheaper than full Photoshop and is a lot more user friendly. It is powerful enough to take care of the needs of about 98% (educated guess on my part) of the photographers that want to do image editing. Paint Shop Pro and Corel PhotoPaint are a couple of others that are very good and reasonably priced. The reason that I suggest Element is that there are a ton of magazine, books, video tutorials, etc. available to help you learn the basics and beyond.

Adobe has a 30 day trial of Elements (it appears for the PC only for some strange reason) that might be worth looking at.

Good call on the Elements software.

I am seriously looking for some good shots of some Orchids I can purchase. Anyone know where I can find some?
You might try doing some searched on photo sites like Flickr, Shutterfly, etc., if you see something you like contact the member. If you need really high quality images and want to license them you could try some stock photo agencies like Fotosearch, Getty, Corbis, Comstock, etc.

 Thank you! I really enjoyed those pictures!! I am seriously looking for some good shots of some Orchids I can purchase. Anyone know where I can find some?
Dude, it's all about The Stock Exchange. All free photos, some you'll have to contact the photographer to be able use. Some of them stink, but some of them rock.

I think if you contact Snogger, he may have some himself. He takes some amazing colorful pictures!
hmm, first I'd have to figure out what a Orchid is.. It's some sort of flower..right :excited: ;) ;) Then I'll have to wait about 3 months or so for the snow to melt and find some... By then I'm thinking she'll find what she is looking for. Thanks for the high regards though :moneybag:

I know it was a tangent so thanks to you both for the input. I'll check them out, starting with Elements.

I love that site. Great resource for designers that work on a limited budget.

I was really pleased with the site. Thank you!

Thanks Snogger and Mrs. Caeser!

Moving to landscapes for today's picture:

Arches and the La Sals
Fantastic!
Thanks.I can only take a small amount of credit on this one. Arches is very photography friendly place. I think you would almost have to intentionally screw up to not get some very good shots. It is an almost magical place, especially the light early in the morning and late in the afternoon.

No doubt. I can't wait to take out my camera on a road trip some day.

Horse #1

Horse #2

In my own opinion, I like #1 better. I wish I could've gotten more of the falling apart-barn in the back in #2, but it was taken at the beginning of fall so it wasn't too visible. And I wish they would've been mostly cloudy days rather than overcast. I just don't get much time to take pictures.

Interesting, I like #2 better. I like the old timey look with the barbed wire fence and I like the composition better. Of course it might be nice if we weren't looking right down the barrel of the horse's rear end, but you shoot what you are presented with. :2cents: I agree about the sky. Dull gray skies are one of the hardest obstacles to overcome for a photographer. Lately around here is seems that about all we are getting is dull gray completely overcast or virtually cloudless skies which are only marginally better.
