There is a Chinese family that just moved into our town a few weeks ago and enrolled their son into school late. My wife is always helping around the school and made nice with the Mother. The Mother has limited English speaking skills but they somehow discussed my wife providing her English lessons and her providing my son Mandarin lessons. They exchanged email addresses and the woman wrote a real nice email explaining where she comes from in China, why they moved here, etc. She invited us over for dinner tonight with the kids and they basically really don't know anyone in town yet so we are doing a nice dead here but I imagine it will be a bit of an awkward time as both have limited English and we have no Mandarin.
I was just arguing about going with my wife but I was starting to sound a bit like Larry David on Curb so I dropped it. Anyone have good topics to bring up in conversation? Any cultural norms we might not be aware of relating to going over to their place? Do we take off our shoes?
