Dion Lewis (5 Viewers)

See ya Lewis. Did anyone really think Dion Lewis was going to be relevant all year?

Has a patriots RB ever been #1 every game or even close?
Are you serious? It got out of hand and they basically took out Gronk and Lewis, then Brady.

Lewis got the vast majority of touches when it was still remotely a game.

Predict when the blowouts will be, and you'll be able to predict when Blount gets a ton of garbage time points.
Keep trying to convince yourself, writing is on the wall he got his chance because Blount was suspended game 1. They worked Blount in game 2 slowly. Knocked the dust off him today.

Lewis had a chance but two fumbles probably lost it for him. Now I'm not saying Blount is going to beast either but if you really think Lewis is going to dominate touches week in and week out, I think your in for a rude awakening. Anyone who thinks otherwise is under the impression that a mediocre guy that has fumbling issues will somehow buck a trend of Patriots RB's over the past several years. Sorry but this dude isn't close to that.
Lol
What's so funny Billy's right? While I'd rather have Lewis over Blount it's foolish to think Blount is only going to get his touches in a blowout. It's going to be gameplan dependant....same crap RidleyVereen owners have dealt with the last few years.
You think Lewis is a mediocre talent as well?

I'm not getting it. If this were another average RB from past years, I'd agree. But whenever Lewis touches the ball, there is excitement. I think Blount gets carries when they want to pound the ball and not chance an injury to a 195 lb RB with dynamic talent. I think today hovers around Lewis' floor.
He's probably better than mediocre but I don't think he's any more talented than Vereen was in his NE prime. I don't think this will be a 50/50 split as Lewis' ability as a receiver will net him more touches than Blount. I just find it funny than most everyone is discounting Blount because he got his in a blowout.

See ya Forsett. Did anyone really think Justin Forsett was going to be relevant all year?

See ya Spiller. Did anyone really think CJ Spiller was going to be relevant all year?

See ya Hill. Did anyone really think Jeremy Hill was going to be relevant all year?

See ya Gordon. Did anyone really think Melvin Gordon was going to be relevant all year?

See ya Yeldon. Did anyone really think TJ Yeldon was going to be relevant all year?

What an asinine statement. Kid had 13 touches, for 67 yards and a TD, almost all in the first half while his team crushed the opposition. Blount got the vast majority of his work with the game well out of hand.

Lewis is the man going forward, even with Belicheat there. This game was set up almost perfectly against him and for Blount, and he still had a decent statline.

The key is that he got all of the goal line carries the first three times they were there. He scored on the first, and then carried for 4 yards to the 2 on the next two....imagine the conversation if he had gone 6 feet more on those opportunities and had 3 tds at halftime and THEN Blount came in and got his 3. Coulda woulda shoulda easily taken place and then I think Lewis is getting nothing but positive posts.

Belichek's history says otherwise. I've owned both Ridley and Vereen in their primes and trying to figure out what Belichek is going to do is damn near impossible. Both Lewis and Blount can be fantasy relevant just like Ridley and Vereen were. I just think owners of either of those guys need to temper their expectations a bit. It's frustrating being involved in the Pats running game...I'm amazed so many of you have forgotten that?

That was the story until today. Today we saw the birth of a clear 3 down rb for the patriots which is fantasy gold.

I only saw a bit on red zone, but he waived off the sub on 2nd and goal, looks to me the guy is the full package...
That was so alpha..

Not going to re-argue this.. If you want to go back to page 9-10ish you can relive this argument

Blount will get more touches when it gets cold, and will be in on earlier downs. The game looks different with Blount in.

Teams that like to use run stuffing linebackers will get caught with Lewis in the game and then they'll go no huddle and exploit the mismatches. Teams with good pass defending linebackers will need to watch it or they'll get caught with Blount on the field. That's what they really want, as much as we all like to talk about the rb1 and rb2.

Last week I left Lewis on my bench and would have won. This week I left Blount on my bench and would have won. FML

I'll believe that when Blount gets significant touches when the game actually matters. Didn't happen today, they shut down Lewis right around the time they shut down Gronk. That feels like a good sign to me.
This write here is the writing on the wall. If he isn't important to their future plans they would not have shut him down for the game. They need him for the future and clearly have big plans with him. You guys are all talking only because blount got 3 tds in GARBAGE TIME. If he would have only gotten 1 if that you would be the complete opposite. This kid lewis is their star running back and will be the lead guy in NE. If you are to ignorant to see then there is no point of trying to discuss with stupidity.

In case people haven't noticed, there is no garbage time when it comes to NE. They are going to try to score unless there is under a minute to go.

I will be the first one to support the idea of using the Pats history but nothing that happened today suggests anything other than what people have been saying in this thread since week 2. To recap "Lewis is the guy until the Pats have a commanding lead then Blount is the guy" played out exactly like that today. Lewis had a good day in limited action and Blount had an awesome day.

No surprises here.

Like we've never noticed poor sportsmanship by the Pats before when the game is well in hand. Just don't complain when the same poor sportsmanship takes TB out.

You'd think a guy named Bostonfred would know the Pats switch to full-on pass mode in the snow.

I agree that was the case today I just don't agree that's going to be the case every week. There will be weeks that Belichick sees the Pats having a huge physical advantage and will want to pound the ball like the Jonas Gray Colts game last year. I also think during the course of other games Belichick will give Blount some carries as a change of pace physical back. I've been burnt by this in the past and just when you think you have it figured out Belichick tosses a curve ball. Lewis is the more talented back and is a better fit with Brady and the passing game, I'm just surprised so many see Lewis as the bell cow and Blount as just the mop up guy.

Being a mop up guy isn't a bad gig on a talented team like this. Both these guys have fantasy relevance and I do think Lewis is the better back and a great FA pickup for those that got him. I just disagree with those that think this week's 15 points are essentially Lewis' floor.

Yes, it's silly to disregard Blount's tocuhes b/c it was a blowout. You can discount them, but don't disregard them.

When the game was not-yet-in-hand, Blount was still getting the ball in all big-packages and that means Lewis will have to continue to find the end-zone from distance (and today's 8-yarder counts as distance)-- and that will not continue at the current rate YTD.

And today's carries being discounted or not, given number of wins the Pats are expected to get, the chances that Lewis gets more carries than Blount going forward might be 30-40% IMHO. That's not a stellar endorsement of Lewis as a future star b/c he will suffer on volume, but carries are not touches either. As far as touches+incomplete-targets go, Lewis should see more than Blount.

If this team scores 4 TD a game, then there's not much to worry about. But as we all know...dont count on either being RB1 in non-PPR.

Scott chandler started getting more reps as the game went on. I'm thinking of kicking the tires on all the worried Gronk owners. Maybe a mid first??

Lewis is a nice play vs teams with good run D's. BB like to throw 50 times when playing teams like the Jets, Ravens..........................

Today I dont think he is a great play at all. 12 points maybe?? 4 grabs, 6-7 rushes.
Tom Brady averages only 5 more attempts (42 vs 37) against top 10 rush defenses since 2012

Ridley saw no difference in carries (15.3 vs 15.7)

Vereen saw no difference in carries (6.0 vs 5.9)

Blount saw a slight increase in carries (6.4 vs 8)

Also, Vereen's receiving stats were about the same regarldess of rush defense.

We take narratives to Nth degree with the Pats for some reason when the data doesn't back it up.

Must start.
Ignore Ghostguy. Dude is a clown. Every now and then he is right but even a blind squirrel can find a nut.
:lmao:

I guess I was way off. 8 carries and 5 grabs rather than the 7 carries and 4 grabs I predicted.

He did get that early TD though, so my 12 point projection was maybe the worst ever. Ever.

Huh? That post proved my point exactly. Vereen's usage went up while blouht's decreased. Explain my dumbness

Lewis looks solid, but he'll have games where he has <5 touches.

I look at them both as high ceiling, match up dependent flex options in standard scoring.

Glad I don't have either.

-scarred former Vereen and Ridley owner

Lewis is the #2 fantasy back in PPR right now behind only Devonte Freeman. I think we pretty much saw his uninjured floor yesterday.

With re: running when the weather gets cold.. I went ahead and tested the newest boogey man and did the splits for Vereen/Blount/Ridley over the past 3 seasons.

The only of the 3 to see a decrease in carries from weeks 1-11 & 12-17 is Blount who had 5 less carries late in the year. Ridley saw a +2 delta, while Vereen saw about +1.5 more. Also, Vereen had just a touch more targets so no real change in passing usage.
1) vereen had 69 rush attempts in week 1-9 last year. They had a week 10 bye. After the bye, he had 37 rush attempts. Before the bye, he had 31 receptions. After, 22. His numbers went down. 2) the year before that, vereen got hurt week 1 and didn't play again until week 10. I would hope his numbers went up in the second half of the season. However, after logging 35 carries in his first 4 games, he logged just 9 carries in his final four.

3) I don't really care if vereen's numbers went down, because Lewis is not vereen.

4) Blount was hurt part way through a game late last season and missed another.

5) Ridleys numbers went down because he got benched and Blount took over.

I didn't ignore your "analysis" because I didn't agree with it. I ignored it because I don't agree with your method, at all.

PPR, he's a must start moving forward. I'd say the same in standard right this moment.

That said, anyone assuming that what Lewis has been so far, is what he will be moving forward will be sorely disappointed some game...as all NE RB owners have been for the better part of the last decade.

History tells us there will be games where Lewis will have a handful of touches. 13 touches, 70 yards and a TD is Lewis' floor? You all have gone crazy...

Recency bias here...don't get caught up in the hype. If I owned, I'd be trying to sell high here as I'd not want to have Lewis come cold/windy weather as he'll put up some 2s and 3s in standard scoring, maybe worse.

I'd say we saw his floor if you drop the TD. That won't happen every week, but PPR, that's still a double digit game. Some games he'll have more touches, but I'd say his uninjured floor is 8-10 carries and 3-5 rec.

Cold weather kryptonite? It gets pretty cold in PITT where he played in college. Don't remember him sitting out because he was cold. Do remember him getting 46 carries in the cold. Wouldn't the guys saying NE throws less in cold mean they run more? That's good for rb. This is not Veeren or cadet who rely almost entirely on passing for value. He can run between the tackles effectively.

That's why past comparisons with guys like Vereen, Woodhead and Faulk carry little weight. He's not like those guys because, unlike all of them, he brings a rushing presence to the field in addition to his receiving ability. As a result he should be locked in for double-digit touches each week as long as he stays healthy and continues to put the fumbling issue to bed.

I don't know how other Lewis owners feel but I was thrilled with what I saw yesterday. The only thing I'm upset about is NE having a bye next week which means I can't start him in Week 4.

Actually, I don't think Brady scales back at all in the cold and that suits Lewis fine, too. Remembering back to that NASTY weather game in Chicago a few years back, seems like Brady just peppered the Bears all day with 4-12 yard passes and Seems like Lewis lives in that area.

Slightly frustrated that he didn't get one more TD 'cause I needed it, but I agree that it was a good sign as far as his prospects moving forward.

He's an RB2/3 with a solid floor in non PPR.

The reason you run big guys in the cold isn't because they're good in the cold, it's because defenses don't want to tackle big guys in the cold. It's exhausting and blount is pretty good at it.

I don't think anyone questions whether Lewis can run in the cold. But in college he was running against smaller slower guys. He's over 50 lbs lighter than blount, and he plays a totally different game. It's exhausting dancing around the field in the cold and getting popped by guys who are bigger than you.

Blount getting carries in the cold doesn't mean Lewis gets benched out right. That's not what I'm saying at all. If he keeps playing like this, he will be hard to keep off the field. Right now he creates problems for opposing defenses that blount doesn't. In the cold, blount will create problems for opposing defenses that Lewis doesn't.

This offense doesn't run based off of fantasy numbers and they don't care about who gets rb1 carries. Look at the Ravens game and colts game in last year's playoffs. They will completely go away from a successful running game in one game and run it non stop in the next. All else being equal, Lewis is playing well enough right now that he deserves to be the lead dog. Blount also played very well. The offense is running well. Everything is candy and sugar plums. They will face tougher tests - by the end of 2007 they went down to the wire in multiple games. When they do, I expect blount to get a few extra cold weather carries and that could cap lewis' upside a little. That doesn't mean Lewis can't have a good game. I don't know why this has to be an all or nothing argument.
