Dion Lewis (3 Viewers)

I have no idea who to compare him to, he is dancing through defenses, slamming into defenders then rolling off of them for extra yards, hes blowing past dudes - he just looks like something the Pats haven't had in the past decade.

But he can't do what Blount can do, which is okay. But Blount still has a significant spot in this offense.

Also, Tedy Bruschi nicknamed Lewis "Squirtey" - its so Gruden-level dumb I hope it sticks.

I have the feeling that BB and TB are on the warpath to prove beyond any doubt that deflated balls had absolutely nothing to do with their success. So I expect to see the pass heavy scheme dominate for this whole season. IMO they are going to run up the score (via Brady) as often as they can and maybe in mid/late fourth quarters of blowouts they may try to run out the clock with Blount.

 
Is it OK if we compare him to Shady McCoy? That's what I see when I watch him. A young Shady on a more dangerous offense.

I don't like the Shady comparison because Shady has much better straight line speed than Lewis. Shady can bounce a run to the outside and get the edge while Lewis isn't fast enough to do that.

IMO, Lewis's best player comparison as far as running style is Barry, a smaller back who doesn't have great straight line speed but has the balance and agility to straight up break your ankles when you're only a foot or 2 away. Obviously, Lewis is not as skilled nor has the production that Barry did, but imo that would be his best running style comparison.

 
how about we just called dion who he is and thats dion. stop trying to compare him to others when he clearly is his own person. No one will ever be like barry and no one is like shady.

 
the problem is (most of the time) people always compare someone to an all time great.

Lewis doesn't even belong in the same paragraph as Barry.

If you're watching the games, you know he is the best they have and you know he's every bit as impressive as a lot of guys we value highly.

The fumble thing is overblown/over thought because he's not costing them games and, in the past when Patriots RBs DID ride the bench after fumbling, it was largely to do in part because there were 2 other guys on the sidelines that could do EXACTLY what the fumbling guy was doing. That's not the case anymore. They don't have a guy that can do what Lewis is doing and they know it. It's why Brady doesn't get the bench when he tosses an INT (or why it's like that on any team).

The bottom line is this Patriots team HAS NOT been this productive and dangerous since they had Hernandez and Vareen and Welker, etc. The coaches know what they got and they are going to use him.

The Patriots had 86 offensive snaps against the Bills. 86! That is obscene. Lewis will be a fine play even in weeks Blount gets more touches.

In a world where "stud" sure thing #1 RBs are losing snaps to the backup, Dion needs to start every week even if Blount starts getting carries. He's making huge plays in the passing game too.

 
I think stylistic comparisons to great players are useful because everyone knows what they mean. That doesn't mean we're saying they're equivalent talents. Could be a poor man's X type of thing, etc, but gives a great idea of what you might expect to be the strengths of their game.

Waldman does it all the time in the RSP (and is very careful to note the above).

Edit: FWIW he reminds me more of shady than Barry. More phone booth change of direction quicks and less apt to do those crazy exaggerated low cuts you see in a lot of Barry highlights (from what I've seen of him anyway).

I'm not sure shady is significantly faster either (not to say he's not a more complete back just from the little bit of additional size)

Only thing you have to worry about with the guy is if he fumbles again. If he doesn't put the ball on the ground, he'll produce with our without Blount and will make an excellent FLEX.

Nah, people are comparable but i just don't like how everyone is comparing him to proven starts and hall of fame Barry Sanders. The kid has talent we all saw it in his 2 games. But i just don't like the OverReaction.

 
I'm going with Kevin Faulk as his floor and perhaps a poor man's Brian Westbrook as his ceiling. He's gotta hang on to the ball but he's in an ideal situation to succeed as he seems like a perfect fit for this type of offense.

I'm buying if I can get him for a decent price still. I hesitate a bit because I am worried another fumble or two could get him in the doghouse and then the obvious general Patriots game plan unpredictability. He looks great out there though, and I bet on talent.

 
The fumbling will be an issue if it doesn't stop, but Lewis has been making up for it with his play. It's like Belichick can't take him off the field because he's too good (and the other RBs suck)

Pretty sure him and Brady are a mission to annihilate the league, so they will stomach the fumbles as long as Lewis keeps bringing the yards and big plays.

funny...I was talking to a guy this morning about him and said that if I had Lewis I wouldn't take CJ for him today...crazy how things change so fast...CJ pretty much a 1st round pick in every draft and Lewis a last round pick/waiver wire pickup and two weeks into the season their outlooks completely flip flopped....

That's reality. I remember a time when I picked up Arian Foster and he had two good days at the end of the year. I literally couldn't trade the guy because people just don't believe/don't want to believe until its beaten into them. Foster then erupts against the Colts and even 4-5 weeks later, people still saying they were skeptical.

Heck, even Two YEARS later, people still tried to give his job to Ben Tate or say this or that.

There is just something about a guy that comes out of nowhere that people refuse to believe and that's why you ALWAYS see guys like that being owned by the same guy across all his leagues. There is always that one guy that believes and he ends up owning the Cruz, the Lewis, etc in 5 leagues.

Dion Lewis is available in my contract league. Shallow league and there are penalties for cutting players, so there's usually some tantalizing prospects on the wire. Lewis looks like the real deal. Currently, I have Blount. Would any of you drop Blount to pick up Lewis?

don't know the scoring but unless it's really TD heavy I'd absolutely drop Blount for him.

 
I have been stacking Gronk-Lewis in a few leagues (and DFS as well). Having Gronk with Lewis pretty much solves the only real issue I have with Lewis, that is he isn't likely to score many TDs. I'm fine with Lewis ripping off chunk yardage and Gronk cleaning up in the RZ.

The fumbles do not worry me too much. He did fumble twice, the first one was a great play by defender and the second was after a nice catch and run while trying to create a big play. This is not to say he wouldn't get benched if this continues, just that I don't think he is a fumbler anymore than his contemporaries and also he has a much longer leash than Ridley and other one trick ponies had.

If anything BB is coaching him up on avoiding the blindside defender from attacking the ball-- which could be a product of his shifty/elusive-ness.

So I just got done watching the coaches film from Sunday's game vs. BUF and all I can say is holy ####### #### is Lewis good. He creates space for himself when there is none; there were several rushing/receiving plays where I was sure he was going to be tackled for a no gain or a loss but he almost always beat the first defender and gained yards. On one specific screen play Brady threw the ball way too high, seemingly out of Lewis's reach.. Lewis extends for it (leaving his feet), grabs it right in front of a defenders face and jukes him out of his shoes for a 12 yard gain. The dude looks special to me.

One of Vereen's biggest problems was if a pass required him to turn down field he ####### dropped it like 90% of the time.

I've seen three such passes to Lewis and he only dropped one, and it was a bad drop bouncing off his hands but I'll take 66%.

Sold! Although, since it's a contract league I had to drop Blount (still pay salary this year and cap hit next year) then bid on Lewis. We'll see if I get him. I don't have a huge budget left and I also just dropped Davante Adams to get in a bidding war on Edelman. I already have Gronk. I want as much of the Patriots offense this year as I can get.

I only drafted Foster because he was available really late. Upside is great, but his injury concerns give me a lot of stress. Full PPR, maybe the difference in points won't be too big. In a trade, I'd still want more for Foster tho

 
So who's starting this weekend with the Jags on tap?

At face value, this sets up to be a Blount game... unless Lewis has become a true feature-back type for BB and the Pats.

Pretty much everyone is starting him this weekend. Hes being started in over 80% of MFL leagues and I expect that # to rise. I am starting him over Woodhead at RB2. Yeah we could all be shellshocked come Sunday when he barely gets touches but Ill worry about that then.

 
update for those who have asked about trade value, etc.

I shopped him around heavily for two days in three different dynasty leagues. 12 teamers and one 16 teamer.

Surprisingly, especially in the 16 teamer where RBs are harder to get hold of than 4-leaf clovers, the reception was luke warm, at best, and I was striking up very lateral moves (wasn't asking for Aaron Rodgers or elite WRs by any means).

The common response I got back was it won't hold up...it's the Patriots...He will Jonas Gray...etc.

I know I am biased but either I'm dead wrong or there are going to be some folks out there (not just in my leagues) that will regret not trading for him.
