**Discuss Field Conditions in Pittsburgh Here** (1 Viewer)

Although the Cincy def gives up a tone of points to the passing game, I am sitting Roeth. D. Anderson gets the call this weekend.

I just can't take the risk of getting only 4 or 6 points from Roeth again.

Any other thoughts on the field conditions? I'm worried about seeing another 3-0 game.
Looked on a couple of Pittsburgh weather sites and it seems about 70-90% chance for rain the entire day. Temps will remain above freezing. I don't think the field will be terrible like it was last week, but ballhandling will be slick. Also, the winds are supposed to be around 10-15 MPH, not 20-30 MPH as I previously saw in this thread.

Sleet and freezing RAIN last night mixed with some snow.

Today it has been raining steadily and hard at times. Supposed to do this all day, so I would say the field will be in the same condition, but who knows.

This situation is HUGE! Has anyone seen the field conditions on any of the pre-game shows? The wrong decision means no playoffs for me. I've got Roeth and Parker in. Any help?

They don't remove the tarpaulkin until an hour before the game, do they? Still, the forecast is for it to be raining during the game as well.

Being a night game, I think the networks will be more preoccupied with the early games. Not sure we'll know anything til late afternoon

In a must-win game, I have Roethlisberger, Chad Johnson, Jeff Reed and (maybe Heath Miller). Opponent has Palmer, Chris Henry, Kenny Watson starting.

Prediction: I will be drunk by the end of the first quarter.

Actual analysis: Don't get too caught up in what happened last week. There's an enormous difference between rain, evel all-day rain, and the kind of storm we saw last week. I know it's fresh in everyone's mind, but just because it was freakishly bad last week doesn't mean it can't be playable this week. Remember the Steelers/Ravens game? This one will be somewhere in between that and last week's debacle.

I hope.

I'm benching Housh and starting Tony Gonzalez.....figure I'd go for the known rather than unknown.

Also, the field might be tarped....but if it is raining hard, once the players start tearing it up it's going to be the same thing we saw on MON

would appreciate anyone there in Pittsburgh and/or going to the game give us some updates before the 4 pm games. A lot riding on these 2 teams.

:goodposting: There has to be news crews and people checking out the field today, especially after Monday Night's debacle. Can't someone tell us what the field is like NOW?Ni

So, based on what we know now, to what extent if any are folks downgrading (1) Big Ben, (2) Parker, and (3) Hines Ward?

I just don't see how the field could have solidified enough in 6 days that it won't fall apart once it's exposed to rain again for a couple hours (include the hour before the game). I'm benching everyone but Parker and Pittsburgh D.

I'm still debating between Big Ben and Brees. I'm really concerned more about the field than the weather at this point. The bad weather will intensify the problem on the field.

Rain has slowed up to almost nothing for now, but they are forecasting 20-30mph winds with up to a 1/2 inch of rain tonight.

If the field is terrible, and it seems there's every reason to expect it will be, it seems foolish to expect many real or FF points tonight.

Probably not as bad as last week, but still not good.

The Vegas under bet would be the way to go - I wonder if it's been dropping.

Heinz Field in game shape for tonight's Steelers-Bengals tilt

Sunday, December 02, 2007

By Ed Bouchette, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

The tarp is off and Heinz Field's playing surface looks a lot better than it did six days earlier when the Steelers beat Miami 3-0 in a swamp.

The sod that was installed one week ago was rolled, aerated and dried out, then covered more tightly than it was the previous week.

The result, at least several hours before tonight's 8:15 kickoff against Cincinnati, is that it looks like a normal grass playing surface despite the daylong rain.

Officials walked the field shortly after 5 when the final tarps were removed. They included Dan Rooney, NFL game operations director Tim Davey, stadium executive director Jim Sacco, stadium operations coordinator Brian Opacic and football operations director Kevin Colbert.

As they walked and stomped on the field, water did not seep out of it. Last week, water seeped through seams in the five tarps used to cover the surface, making for a marshy mess.

This time, the grounds crew covered the seams with what looked like large Saran Wrap, and then placed additional tarps on top.

Best and most important post of the thread. Thanks for posting this Steelers4Life. :( I would not be surprised at all to see over 40.

I know this belongs in the assistant coach forum but there is nobody there now. I have to pick between Palmer and Big Ben at QB, who do you guys think will have the better game?

Thanks

FWIW, it's raining really hard right now in Pittsburgh, at least where I am in Oakland (about 5 miles from Heinz).
The radar maps have been showing a big splodge of rain steadily closing in on Pittsburgh and due to arrive about now so this doesn't surprise me. "Splodge" is the technical term, BTW.

Have now read on three different Pitt forums in last few mins that it's raining hard.

So after they took the tarps off at 5:00, did they ever put them back on or has the field been absorbing 3 hours worth of rain?

Carson Palmer-QB- Bengals Dec. 2 - 6:06 pm et

Heinz Field appears to be in much-improved condition Sunday night despite day-long rain in Pittsburgh.

Water was not seeping out of the field like last week. The sod that was installed one week ago was rolled, aerated and dried out, then covered more tightly than it was the previous week. It reportedly looks like a normal grass surface, although it will be wet. As we saw in the Philly-Seattle game, that doesn't mean offense will be stopped.

Sounds like a "score early" game because the field may get worse as the the game is played. If it is raining all game long it should be a mess by the end.

I believe the main issue last week was that there was water trapped under the sod when it was laid down. If it was drieed out it should be good to go. I was impressed how well it actually held together. I didn't see any mud. The players jersey were pretty clean (just wet) and I didn't see any sod flying. It looked liek they were playing on a thermaputic mattress.
