Disney Vacation (4 Viewers)

Unbelievable how much a trip to Disney World costs today.  I took my granddaughter about a decade ago and thought it was very expensive.  I remember my parents taking me in March of 1972 (first opened late 1971 I believe) and my stepfather complained about the cost of our room at the Contemporary Resort Hotel being around $40.  If memory serves you could get a couple of steak dinners, appetizers, and a cocktail for around the same price.

1971 cost - https://www.worldofwalt.com/what-a-disney-world-vacation-cost-in-1971.html

We started toying around with going for spring break this year, but the costs are still tripping me up.  I hate it too.  We feel a little guilty cause our adopted daughter we've had 2 years has only been once.  Our other kids have been 7 or 8 different times.

We have some DVC points we need to use and can stay at Old Key West or Saratoga.  We've never been to either, but are up for trying.

5 day Park Hopper tickets for a family of 5 are $3300.

Meal Plans aren't currently available.  Whats the word there?   Whats the cost of food per day?  $300?

Total?  5 people, 5 days' admission?  I must be reading this wrong.

That's cheaper than I would have thought, including park hopper.  Hmm.

Just booked a five night package at Old Key West for 4 of us. Five day Disney ticket x4. With airfare out of the Northeast it was a total of $3920. Not as bad as I thought. Got the Venture credit card with $1000 in free airline miles so airfare was basically free so net cost $2900.

Honestly, I would ditch the park hopper pass and go regularly way.  Unless you are really close to EPCOT (staying at Beach club) and you can just walk right in to enjoy evening/dinner there I don't think it is worth it.  I find I am so exhausted at a day at the parks that I don't want to go to two parks in a day.  If you want to do somoething in the evening just get dinner at one of the resorts as you get a bit of disney experience.  Lots of great character meals, etc. you can do by jumping around resorts.

I think we're going to opt for Universal. Kids have been wanting to do that anyway.    Got on the Costco travel site last night and found a 3 night deal at the Cabana Bay with all the bells and whistles for about the same $3300.  Going to find a quiet little beach town for 3-4 nights on the way home to fill out the week.

Just got back last week from a 4 night stay at Saratoga Springs.   We used our DVC points to book two 3 BR villas and 1 studio for 20 of us.

Crowds were very manageable, longest wait was about 25 minutes for RnR Coaster.   We always arrive before the park opens and for rope drop and ride the big-ticket items in the first 2-3 hours of park opening

We had park hoppers which offer great flexibility but I didn't like the 2:00 pm start.   Should be 12:00 noon IMO in case you want to park hop to EPCOT for lunch

Was able to ride both Star Wars rides and the Mickey/Minnie Runaway Railway which were the three we hadn't done before.   While the Rise of the Resistance is very impressive I actually preferred Smuggler's Run and liked MMRR better than either.

Mask compliance in the parks was excellent, pretty much 100% in indoor areas (mask are not required outside).  People that had their nose exposed were politely told to pull their mask all the way up.   It amazes me how people will be so compliant for Disney but absolutely lose their minds when the schools want kids to wear masks in the classroom (don't mean to start a political discussion, just making an observation).

Overall a great time and glad we did not cancel.

Any Universal guys know if now is a good time to book?  I know they typically have more sales and deals than Disney.

how old are the kids again? Universal is a blast, but if they are under the height requirements or don't like thrill/dark/fast rides than there is not a ton for them to do there.

Not spending your money, but price out one of the deluxe resorts (Hard rock, portifino or royal pacific). They are closer to the parks but the big benefit is that they include the unlimited Express pass for everyone. Its a fastpass on steroids that allows you to walk on any ride, at any time with no wait at all (virtually). We can knock out whole parks in a few hours using that.

By itself its like $150/per ticket upgrade, so while the resort cost would be more expensive, it might be much less expensive than buying an Express pass for everyone, so its kind of a cost/benefit perk.

when are your windows? I'm not up on the complete crowd calendars for the year, but just like Disney you have basic seasons volume (I.e. summer) and holiday jumps (christmas, spring break, etc). I would assume any other time would be mainly fine

but if you consider my psot above about the Express pass, volume would be a non issue. We go in summer and as I said we bang out whole parks in hours

Hey, you've spent my money in the thread for 7 or 8 years now!

Kids are 11,9 and 6...older 2 are tall enough and love the thrills.   Mom and the little will go get ice cream.

I was double checking the express pass and I didn't see it.  I definitely want to go that route.

Yeah, Its about $500 more for the Royal Pacific.   Thats a no brainer.

We'll be there March 12-15.

lol glad I could help!

https://www.universalorlando.com/web/en/us/tickets-packages/express-passes#faqs

seems not as expensive as I though but I only get it with the hotel .

https://www.universalorlando.com/web/en/us/places-to-stay/hotels/at-a-glance/hotels-overview

the bottom 3 resorts have the express pass included.

So you would need 5 Express Passes

5x (roughly) $100 each = $500

Cabana Bay = $130/night (based on the link) + express pass out of pocket = $630

Royal pacific with ExPass free = $250/night (based on link)

so for $250/night you are getting $380 extra in value.

just a thought.

edit: just saw your post above this while I was doing my math. lol .

BTW Royal Pacific has an awesome "All you can eat Wok" restaurant there. Basically its like a chilpotle idea, where you pick your noodles, meat, veggies, and sauce and they wok it up for you, as many as you want. Its a sit down restaurant and b/c its in the resort, its usually dead. Went there 2x and sat right down.

Well, on my way home from our trip (thanks @glvsav37). We had a great trip all in all.

We arrived Sunday at about 12:30 to the Polynesian. I did the online check in so we went directly to the room. The room wouldn't open so to the desk we go. We only waited a few minutes when we were waved over by two different cast members. We went to the first one and I immediately wished we didn't. She was the most miserable cast member I've ever talked to. Anyway,  the problem was fixed (my credit card was flagged since it was run in Florida and I'm from DE) and we got to the room.

We went to Disney Springs so the women can shop and I can get drinks. Had dinner at the Boathouse and it was fantastic.  We will definitely be back again.

After dinner, we got dessert at Ghirardelli and went back to the resort where we went to the pool and watched fireworks from the beach . Great first day.

MK was Monday and I almost had a heart attack when I saw Main Street. It was packed. Turned out it was the scalpers hitting the stores getting 50th anniversary stuff to flip on ebay.

We hit every ride we wanted and the posted times were always much lower than the actual time we spent in line except for Splash Mountain. That was posted at 40 minutes and it was every bit of that. Mine Train was posted at 60 minutes,  it only took 35. We ate at Casey's since that's my daughter's favorite quick serve and left after that.

Tuesday was animal kingdom and it was great. Zero crowd, and everything was basically a walk on. We got through everything so quickly we actually left at 4:00 because we didn't have any wait times. The one nit pick we had was the Festival of the Lion King show. How the hell do you get rid of the flying monkeys and Birds of Paradise? Very disappointing.

Wednesday was a day of rest. We had breakfast at Ohana and dinner at Raglan Road. Both were fantastic. Raglan Road is soooo under-rated. In between the women spent more money at Disney Springs.

Epcot was the last day and, again, lines were awesome. Soarin and test track were walk on. The only ride that I saw with a wait was Frozen. Dinner was at San Angel in the Mexican pavilion.  Absolutely terrible. This was the third time we've been there and the first time we were disappointed. We should have hit Via Napoli.

The big disappointment for me was not being able to go to trader sams. The wait times were ridiculous but, even than, it was even longer than the quoted wait time. Oh well.

For us, the park hopper was all about getting back nightly for the Electrical Parade.

Everyone I know that's been has said it's been a ghost town, especially during the week.  It's going to start cooling off a bit though so things might begin to pick up again, but people around here just don't seem eager to jump back in feet first with the way things have been going here over the summer.

Alexa is getting a pair of mouse ears.

Amazon and Disney have teamed up to create a Disney-themed Alexa skill available soon.

Called "Hey Disney!" the device will work just like a regular Alexa device but these will offer more Disney-centric content like Disney trivia, music, interactive personal greetings and more. The devices will also be in the WDW Resort rooms soon and can answer such questions such as "what are the park hours" and "When is the next bus leaving my resort?"

Press release

Edit: I thought it was a specific device, but the Verge is saying its a skill and you can mickey-ize it with accessories.

Went to boo bash this weekend. We had fun, of course, but my god Disney is taking advantage of people. It was like $50 more than the usual Halloween party ticket with half the stuff. No parade, no shows, no fireworks. Lot more people there than a typical party - it’s just total lunacy. I’ll never pay for an event like that again. Also got stuck on the haunted mansion for 30 minutes which cut into our time.

However, my son loved it because he got to go trick or treating at Disney which of course ultimately makes it worthwhile.

Took a friend for the weekend - his first time going. He said he got stuck on 8 of the 14 rides he went on. Just ridiculous. They really need to re-invest in some of their rides at this point.

this is becoming very apparent and IMO, this time period will be a big stain on the legacy. I respect the fact that they need to recoup money, but there is a line between raising prices and flat out gauging people. I'm sitting here with popcorn waiting for the new Lighting Lane prices to be announced. I am still considering a short trip in Nov for a conference, and normally I would go to the parks 1-2 days, but honestly I'm considering not even walking into a park this time.

I noticed this too. I don't know if they're not properly maintaining the rides due to cost or lack of staff, but the rides in Magic Kingdom seemed to break down if you looked at them cross eyed.

On the gouging, yep and it sucks.  I’ve said it a few times but it feels like our days of yearly or twice a year trips is long gone.

On the rides - which rides?  I know there’s several at MK that it’s happened to me but never that many.  Is it possible they were stopped while boarding a special needs individual and he just thought it was stuck?  I know that’s happened to me on a few rides and it’s possible if there happened to be a large special needs outing that could explain it.  Otherwise that’s a big oof on Disney.

We did the old Mickey's Not So Scary party a few years ago and thought it was way too crowded to do again.  Best to go to MK the first thing, morning after the party

We went probably 5 years ago and had a blast.  It wasn't overly crowded, but its didn't feel like a VIP experience either.  We all had fun, and I'm glad we did it.  Trick or Treating thru the park was a priceless experience.

But one time was enough.

They have definitely upped the capacity on these. It used to be you were paying to walk on rides. My buddy wanted to do the mine train ride the other night - 40 minute wait. It’s a 3 hour event! Doesn’t make sense.

That ended up being the one ride he wanted to do that he couldn’t. He got on soarin the next day at Epcot even quicker when it wasn’t a ‘special’ event.

We just did a real iron ore mine train ride in Vulcan, MI last week. It was a full hour ride with interesting historical commentary and was a harrowing ride in a very narrow tunnel way down below.

$17 pp

lol I have a thing about going underground. Sounds fascinating but maybe I’ll watch a YouTube video.

Magic Bands just got their +

MagicBansd+, the 50th anniversary interactive MBs were just announced to enhance the 50's celebration.

The MB+'s have a digital screen on top of them that will interact with the 50 character statues recently placed around the parks, certain shows and other experiences around the resort.

No release date (except for sometime in 22) or price yet announced.

The Starcruiser (Disneys Star Wars themed 2 night experience hotel) is finally launching on March 1, 2022.

General bookings can begin on October 28th, however DVC and AP holders can try and book their voyages earlier. On October 7-8th, there will be limited availability for pre-booking.

Did Genie+ release today with the start of the 50th celebration? I haven’t seen anything about it on my non FBG sources.

I have not heard anything yet. the MK was bonkers today, so I doubt they would roll out something that huge on a day like today. My guess is early November to be ready for the thanksgiving/Christmas rush.

Hi, I'm back.  Thinking about another trip in June.  Looking to go through Costco.  9 nights on property with 5 day park hopper and flights for 4 is starting about about $6500.  Is this the best route?

Also, need a refresher on the tiers of the properties.

Also, need a refresher on the tiers of the properties.
Properties are divided into 3 categories: Deluxe, Moderate and Value. The basics that are generally used to define them are 1. location, 2. amenities/on-site dining, and 3. Overall size.

1. Location: Deluxe resorts are generally closer to the parks, often within walking distance or connected by some form of transportation not being a bus. The new skyliner has blurred this a bit but we will hit that later.
2. Amenities/dining: Things like number of pools, shopping, on-site bars, etc.  All location have a quick serve option, but deluxe resorts will have multiple sit-down dining locations where a Value will only have a food court.
3. Overall size: Most Deluxe resorts will have smaller footprint or in a tower. This keeps things like amenities and transportation closer to the rooms. Values are a bit more spread out and would have more rooms (more people generally mean more crowded buses). And moderates are more spread out and the rooms located in smaller buildings around the property, so you may find yourself much further away from the main building or certain pools and bus stops.

Most Deluxe resorts will also have a DVC building or wing in them

Deluxe category: Contemporary, Polly, Grand Floridian, Wilderness Lodge, Animal Kingdom Lodge, Yacht/Beach Club, Boardwalk, Riviera
Moderate: Port Orleans, Caribbean Beach, Coronado Springs.
Value: All Star (Music, Movies or Sports), Art of Animation, Pop Century

As mentioned above, the new skyliner system is an elevated cable car route that connects a few certain resorts, Epcot and The Studios. Art of Animation (Value) and Caribbean Beach resorts are both in the Mod/Value categories that have skyliner stations and it adds a ton of value to these resorts while still keeping them in their price category. The new Riviera is the deluxe resort on that line as well.

Overall, the way I look at it is to figure out your budget 1st. If deluxe is out of reach, then scratch the idea off the list 1st. Otherwise, think about where you want to spend most of your time. If you are an open > close parks person, then maybe the resort is just a bed and a place to shower. If you are more a 50/50 resorts/parks person (like me), then the pool and amenities might factor in more.

Also think of time. WDW is huge and getting from one place to another could be 45 mins or more cutting into your vacation time spent on a bus. Deluxe resorts are located where they are mainly to save the guests time. We spend a lot of vacations at the Contemporary and its literally a 5 minute walk to the front gates of MK, or a short monorail ride to Epcot. Resorts like the Beach club or Boardwalk are within walking distance to Epcot and Studios.

Theming could also play a part in your decision. Each resort is so detailed in their theming that if you want a certain "feel" then that might weigh a bit more on your decision.

Consider party size. You have 4 which will get you into any basic room. The values generally have a few square feet smaller rooms, while mods and deluxe's are a bit larger. But if you want even more space, you could consider a resort like Art of Animation that is the only one with family suite type rooms with 2 bathrooms and additional beds. I joke that any family can live in a studio on day 1 when everyone is happy and excited...but talk to me toward the end of your trip when everyone is hot and tired and see how much you love sleeping on top of each other then?? lol

But that also brings me to my last point, renting a DVC room. You mentioned going through Costco which is fine. However, many DVC owners will have their points up for rent b/c they cant go and their points might be expiring, or for whatever reason. DVC rooms are generally the biggest on property and can be rented for (generally) much less then booking a standard room directly. Each DVC room is in a deluxe resort so you are getting all the top amenities for much less. Also, with the savings, you could consider going baller and upgrading to a 1 or 2 bedroom suite that would give you a full kitchen, in-room laundry (so you can pack less) machines and a ton of space to stretch out. There are web sites that are DVC point brokers that are super easy to use, or if you know a member you can see if they will rent you their points. All DVC rooms are on a 'point per night' rate that changes based on the resort, room type and time of year, so use this cost calculator to see what you would need.  @Deranged Hermit just did his last trip with my points and overall it went pretty smooth.

I was 0-7 on ADRs for Ohana for the upcoming trip.  Not staying on property this time so had to wait till the 60 day mark for each of our reservation days.  Foreshadowing that the parks are going to be slammed moving forward or Ohana is just the toughest ticket in the house to get a reservation for now?  Interesting enough Yak and Yeti was also on my list and that never seemed to be available for dinner reservations either which surprised me.  Leaving Thanksgiving day and returning home Dec 3.

I think we're going to the Universal Halloween Horror Nights tonight.  Haven't been in a few years.  Pray for me.

(actually looking forward to the Beetlejuice haunted house :bag: )

Is this it for the Frontierland Shootin' Arcade?
It recently reopened for free play, but now it seems it will be closing on Nov 27th for no reason given, and no reopening date has been listed.

As was said upthread, the days of us going every year are gone with these prices.

I think our plan will be to buy annual passes and try to go like 3-4 times in one year. Bank our dvc points the year before and the borrow as well so we can stay using only points.

Cost per trip will be way down then.

Alright, pulled the trigger on the annual business conference I attend for next month at WDW.
I was on the fence for a few reasons, but mainly dealing with air travel. Southwest's massive issue last week didnt help bc thats the main carrier for my local airport.  But i was able to get non-stops both ways, unfortunately they were at stupid hours, really early AM, but its worth it for not having to connect.

I dont think I'll have a lot of park time on this one. Most of the parks close on the earlier side that weekend and the conference runs until 5/6pm each day. So that would give me very time at night considering the current ticket prices (and I'm not an AP anymore), and there are no more discounted "After 4pm" tickets. l prob will go on Friday after I get there, but that still wont be till about noon. My guess is I'd do a combo of Studios and Epcot, so I can finally do Rise of the Resistance and then see the new stuff at epcot and take in a little F&W—plus it's the park that closes the latest, so maximize my only day

I'm thinking of trying some dining locations I've never done before on the other nights. Staying at Disney Springs, but open to visiting some resorts for a meal and checking out their vibe. I think the top of my list is Topolino's Terrace at the new(ish) Riviera Resort. I'm hoping Jellyrolls opens this month (as reported) b/c I've never been there and it would be a good after hours spot, also want to visit Trader Sams at the Polly.

I love it when things fall in to place...Like a little gift from the Universe.

We've been planning spring break around an Orlando trip.  Kind of torn between Universal or WDW.  Leaning heavily to Universal, we haven't booked anything yet.

I just had a conference announce the front end of that week in Orlando.  At the Waldorf Astoria Orlando.  That looks like a pretty central location.  Close to the boardwalk and all that fun stuff we never really do.

I know its always ideal to stay on Property, but Universal is a 2 day park if you have express passes correct? Might try and knock that out and dip our toe into Disney 1 night?
