So teams are reviewing tape on referees as a part of game preparation, about which ones are more prone to throw flags for certain penalties. I know it's a stretch, but has anyone looked into this for FF research? Are there certain ref's who will let pass interference slide, or allow a lot more bumping and running? What about with roughing the passer calls? If defenses will be spreading the hurt on a little more liberally, will that affect the QB's stats? We take into account weather reports, defensive schemes, coaches play calling, domes, and many other variables. Is this something else to take into account when planning the immaculate line-up?

I totally agree. I also check the flight crew of the traveling team. If they have the "old bag crew", the team is more likely to be in a bad mood, resulting in a 5.3 point reduction in scoring. If they have the "super hot 22 year old crew" their testosterone levels increase, resulting in a net increase of 8.3 points per game.

And don't get me started on the pre-game meals.

I agree that the officials should not factor into your decision at all, and most people here are just making jokes.

But along the same lines - something you'd never usually think about, especially if you don't play in IDP leagues - last year it became widely known that the statistician in St. Louis was extremely reluctant in awarding assisted tackles to defensive players. IDP stats for both teams always came out lower than they should for games played in St. Louis. I'm just pointing this out to say that sometimes the little things do make a difference. If you could prove such a trend for a particular Ref, and prove statistically that it made a difference of a couple of points, then I might consider it as a factor in a big game. But even then, probably not. There are too many other variables that carry a lot more weight in the equation.

Dollars to doughnuts you'll find significantly superior blitz pickup rates (under the vast majority of atmospheric conditions) when hot pink gear is utilized. Well, I know that was the case during the first few BC gear games, at least. It's been a real Sneech Fest among linemen ever since, with the DL mimicking OL pink patterning, and the O-Line desperately attempting to break the camouflage. I've read that it's also one of the main reasons we haven't seen many color blind quarterbacks since Testaverde.Scoff if you all must, but victory's determined in the subtleties. I'd refer you to Tsyplakov's '98 article detailing the incremental performance gains achieved with the transition from traditional high-drag embroidered jersey patches to the hand-silkscreened variety, but he's gone off the grid since the noodle incident and I can't find a link on any of my pay sites.

The tendencies of officials can be used to help predict the outcomes of games in some cases. Holding is called differently by different officials which in turn can allow one player to win or lose his individual matchups more or less, thus bigger/smaller running lanes, more/less time to pass. It's way more complicated than just that, but the short answer is that there is an edge to be had by understanding officiating better than others. The data collection and analysis is relatively daunting and obscure to date, general speaking. That makes it currently very impractical for use except mainly in the cases of professional sports bettors who are going to fund the research properly.

For me, the difference is, and always will be Gatorade vs Powerade. Teams that use Powerade, have a 22% higher electrolyte level.

The extra things I check every week:

- Which hydration source the team is using. Water? Gatorade? Powerade?

- The tire pressure in the bus from the hotel to the game. Is the tire pressure at a good enough PSI to limit the amount of bumping to possibly irritate the players?

- Which pilot the team uses to fly to the game, and which show/movie they watch if any

- When the field was last watered. I know a guy who works in the mowing business and he has the inside scoop.

- Which direction/speed the wind will be
