Does Elon Musk buying Twitter affect your answer for question #1?

Created an account in 2009. Never made a post. Didn't use it much for a long time. Started using it more in the last few months to follow breaking news. I try to avoid any hot take type posters.

Twitter is my most used app right behind iMessage. My phone enjoys reminding me daily.  Instant reaction to the Mavs game? Check. Links to stories about the latest political/social/popculture event? Check. Videos from this weekend's disc golf tournament? Check. Daily pics of cute redheads who like to show uptops and bottoms? Also check.

Like @tymarsas, I also signed up early and gave up pretty quickly. But once you learn to drink from the firehose, cultivate your following list, and learn the search function, it's a pretty valuable resource. We got big rain and lightning and thunder late last night and early this morning. A quick search of "Fort Worth weather" at 3:30 am and the latest posts were weather maps and showing when it would pass.

I would go so far as to say it is an essential resource. If you want to know about breaking news in your hometown or anywhere in the world you can't beat Twitter (disclaimer: What is being instantly reported on the Twitters has not been vetted by legitimate news sources and may not be accurate).

I assume this means that one has an account where they either post their whatever and/or follow one or more others?  And, that clicking on tweets in message board posts and news articles, etc. does not rise to the level of "using" Twitter?  Or, would this fit "Yes, but not much"?

In this hyper scientific poll, I think I'd call that "Yes, but not much".

Have they voiced why they might leave if Musk buys? What's their beef?

A lot of people hate Musk.

My guess is some it's been from the expectation he'd be more favorable to the right leaning sites. Babylon Bee is/was suspended from Twitter and Musk was on their podcast recently.

I do not user Twitter and have no desire. I use no social media other than a FB account where I follow multiple BBQ, music, and aquarium/fish tank groups.

Got it, I guess then that a lot of people will be disappointed as there is no way Musk is going to pick sides in any ideological fashion. Musk loves him some Musk Brands. And rightfully so, one word from him and share price goes up or down and often it seems he does things for sheets and giggles.

There is some talk from people saying they'll leave if Musk buys it.

A search of "leave Musk" on Twitter has a bunch of people stating, "For those that said they will leave Twitter if Musk buys it....will be back in a week."

Honestly I don't think this is a "move to Canada if Trump wins situation". Most Twitter users are not political, even more follow the rules, and even more won't be affected on the site by changes Musk may or may not make. "The Tesla guy/weed guy on Rogan/dogecoin guy bought Twitter? Cool."

Thanks. My guess is it will be like move to Canada if Trump wins in people say it and then don't do it.

After the Great Exodus from Twitter to Parlor and now Truth Social I doubt there will be much movement to delete accounts if Musk is successful in his bid. Just mho.

By “recently” do you mean last year or was there another time?

Twitter is what each user makes of it. It's as easy to filter this nonsense out as it is filter it in. Our populace's backwards priorities and our desire for ineffective policy on full display right here.

Never got into Twitter beyond the links people post here. It’s pretty terrible, even by social media standards. Just because we can say something doesn’t mean we should, and not everyone needs to know what you think, myself included on both ends of that statement.

Use it as my drama free zone.  Sports, FF analysis, space stuff, etc etc.  All hobbies and interests.  Him buying it matters none to me as the effects he has likely won’t penetrate the “firewall” I’ve built.

The bolded is me (don't actually post my own tweets).  I went with "Yes, but not much".

I had an account with my actual name and likeness for several years that I used very sparingly.

During COVID, I found myself diving into unhealthy conversations on there regularly and didn't like the way I started handling myself so I deleted my account.

However, I found I missed the sports and news aspects, so I created a new anonymous account and am on it pretty regularly (especially during the end of the NBA season and start of the playoffs).

I voted "Yes. A pretty good bit." and "No".  I actually follow Musk and think he is a weird dude, but don't see anything he does effecting my Twitter experience in either direction.  I did notice the people making anti-Musk posts and threatening to leave over it.  I mocked one of them a bit because his comments were just ridiculous and think the whole idea that he is going to make it worse is just comical.

We might not have even the tiny election reform movement we have if it wasn't for Twitter giving us the chance to spread the word. And I'm convinced that Twitter was one of the most important tools that led to the sports public coming around to the idea of college athletes being able to make money.

It's pretty hard on users who hold traditional opinions that don't bear up under scrutiny.

Btw, "wait and see" is the proper approach to take with Musk's ownership. Will we be able to criticize Tesla and SpaceX? Mock stupid ideas and lies?

I guess a more robust give and take is considered "toxic" by some but Twitter has always felt like a pretty good place for hashing out ideas to me.

Let’s hear more about the cute redheads.

Why should my Twitter habits change if Elon Musk buys it?

There is some talk from people saying they'll leave if Musk buys it.

The issue for me is that I use Twitter to stay current on a few specific news areas - certain sports teams, certain areas of my profession and some of my hobbies. Part of the monetization of Twitter naturally means including ads and unsolicited "promotion" tweets in my feed. I would happily pay a subscription fee right now to get rid of all that, but for now, its pretty easy to scroll past those and ignore them. My main fear is that by investing $44bln, Musk is going to have increased pressure to generate revenue and that's going to have a negative effect on the value of the product to me. Its really just like many other news sources - we're all busy, trying to find the best content in the most efficient way. If Twitter ramps up the noise, I will probably end up migrating over time to other sources for information.

Every day since the beginning. I think I have a grand total of 1 tweets.....some ESPN contest I figured WTH?

Easier than searching 97 different places.  See the stories and what's trending, go from there to the source. I'm sure I get specific ads based on my usage. Don't care. I never click on them anyway.

Follow a few things.  Get quick breaking Sports news and some other news accounts.  Or fun atuff like Super 70s sports and Shooter McGavin.
Dont post anything on it.

Musk’s involvement doesn’t really change it at all for me

I disagree. While I may occasionally click on a link to Twitter posted here on these boards, I do not consider that doing so is "using" Twitter. I do not have a Twitter account and likely never will. I do not care if Musk purchases Twitter or not.

I sorta feel like Bobby Boucher Jr's Mama when I say "Social Media is the Devil!" 👹 and I believe it.
