Do you get sedated at the Dentist? Maybe some @Dentist help please (1 Viewer)

Took a trip to the dentist not long ago and asked for gas sedation.  I understand the effects.  I was disappointed in my last trip because not only was the nosepiece annoying, but I didn't feel a damned thing.  I feel like if the dentist is offering, and I'm paying, I should be able to get my buzz on while they do terrible things to my teeth.  Does anyone get a benzo prescription from their dentist or primary physician?  Sometimes I feel like to get some dental work done they need to treat me like I'm a wild animal because I'm about ready to jump out of the chair and start throwing elbows, which likely would be frowned upon.   @Dentist what are the settings you people set the tanks to?  Would it be weird if I next time asked them to turn the volume up?  Or ask for a benzo prescription?

nitrous is pretty mild sedation.. some people just don't feel much.

I have no aversion to cranking up that nitrous for those people... but many offices have a ceiling that they are willing to turn it up to.

You can definitely ask to have both the nitrous percentage and the volume increased...  whether they will comply or not is a different story.

I don't even charge people for nitrous.. i figure if they are that nervous and need sedation it will make my life easier if they accept and do it.

wait, this is something you can ask for??

last time i went to the dentist (4-5 months ago) they had to numb my mouth with 4 shots. i hate needles & the dentist (no offense). every visit makes me more anxious than the last. would nitrous take the edge off at least??

it might, just have to try it, not all offices have it.  expect to pay, it's rare to be free like I have it priced

anxiety

nothing really gives me fear or anxiety, except the dentist. can't explain it.
Oh sorry. I had no idea you can even ask for nitrous for cleanings.

Im surprised my dentist has never offered. I have an insanely sensitive gag reflex. X-rays are torturous.

Thanks!  So about some people not feeling much... I know that it can have a pretty nice effect.  So what's the difference between the nitrous at the dentists office and the nitrous as a Phish concert?  What is the standard mix at the dentist's?  I think most typical balloons at a concert for instance are 50/50 NO2/atmospheric.  Do you ever write a prescription for 2 valium or something, if you see someone that has anxiety and they ask for it?

I hear you furley.  I don't mind needles or pain, I just have some weird anxiety about people doing stuff to me that I can't see, and a dentist fits this bill perfectly.  The bolded phrase sounds 100% like me.  Ask for the gas, at least!  I'm thinking about also asking for a tranquilizer or just taking a ####load of benadryl if it comes to that.

 needles, surgery, whatever only bother me in two situations.  One is the mouth.  Freakin hate getting the needle before a cavity or root canal.  The other is the old man inspection.  I wonder if they can give nitrous for that?

Some of you guys might want to start brushing your teeth and flossing more than once a week if you're needing nitrus and needles for ####### CLEANINGS.

Jesus.. is "seeing how much granulated sugar I can hold in my mouth at once" a hobby for you guys?

I recently went to the Dentist to have my teeth cleaned. Because it had been 20 years. I didn't even think about anesthesia, they do it with an automated brush now for Christ's sake. There was some blood, but no real pain. Dentist told me to come back in a year, but implied I didn't really need to. Good teeth. Or as his assistant said, good saliva. Wish I'd know that when I was younger, I could have gotten away with a spit swapping joke.

Whenever I go to my dentist I lay under a glass coffee table, the assistants take a dump on it and the dentist takes video. What the hell are you guys going for?

Valium/xanax script before appt. High anxiety patient you are. Bring someone to drive you.

I don't mind the numbing by the needle at all.  I hate the drilling on the tooth itself, but I usually don't feel much once numbed up.

it can range between 20/80 and 50/50.    Most people settle around 35/65.

I haven't prescribed valium in years.. if people are that scared, generally they find a doc who advertises sedation and i have no interest in that business.

is it the sound?   I have some noise cancelling headphones and an old phone that i converted into just a wifi device that has Pandora on it..  most people who hate "drilling" are fine with that...  if it's the vibrations then i've got nothing.

I just had a crown replaced last week.  The shots are never an issue but after they wore off it felt like the dentist must have put her fist in my mouth.   My cheekbone was sore, I have no freaking idea how that happened.

You need to see my hygienist, she rests her boobs on my head during the cleaning.   It's a good kind of nervous.

No, it can still be painful at times even after the shots.  It is usually just one or two spots but still it is annoying.

I never use to get anxious at the dentist until recently when the dentist tried to use this tounge blocking device for people with gag reflex. Now I have a gag reflex when I go to her.

They put that device in your mouth that keeps it wide open so they can work while you are out.   At least that's what they did to me when I had a crown put in a few months ago.

I wasn't out, just shot up.  But now that you mention it, they did put a triangle thing in my cheek.

yep that thing.  much as was sore for a week.

And back to the thread... one of the assistants will call into the pharmacy and I take some kind of pill 30 minutes before I have any work done.   Didn't take it for my cleaning.  lol.

I freaked out a few years ago while have some dental work done and had to stop right in the middle of a procedure and could not continue.  I had a cold and my nose was congested. Then two people over me jamming instruments into my mouth and I could not breath. Felt trapped and panicked.

My dentist now gives me a script for 5mg valium.  Take one 45 minutes before I go for cleaning or anything and I am calmer than a monk on morphine.

I can't imagine a job where every person I see is either scared to death or just doesn't want to be there.

No offense Dentist my friend but you deserve every penny you make.  Hopefully you don't dump the dollars into more money-pit boats though.

That has to be a huge draw back.  People must cancel all the time?   Is that a problem D?

That's an un-fun part of the job, and yes cancellations can be a problem.

I only have one boat and it is a 1970 boat and was gifted to me.   I don't spend much money on it.   Initially I had to spend several thousand to get a new engine and some other parts taken care of, but now it's pretty cheap to run.

Said no one ever about a boat...If you didn't have the boat you could retire 3 months earlier...
